I was struck by the mutual respect, even affection in the tribute by Kemi Badenoch and the good humour in the exchanges between her and the Prime Minister.
The Commons at its best!

Well they all know they could be next for the chop. It is a bear pit.

From the entire house.

And it looks like Rachel Reeves is going with him.

Shabana Mahmood is heavily tipped to get the Chancellor job.

Personally, I'd settle for The Man In The Moon or anyone, really, who doesn't have a barely suppressed hatred of pensioners as demonstrated by Rachel From Accounts......

Oh for goodness’ sake! She is Chancellor. What have you achieved in public life?
I very much doubt that she hates pensioners.

I do think the whole thing would be better if Parliament was in a modern building with a semi-circular, tiered set-up. It is far too adverserial as it is. I know from friends that the building is very hard for people to work in and inadequate in so many ways.
I am sure it could have a future as a tourist attraction.

I worked there in the early 90s and it was not fit for purpose then.

I felt so sorry for Keir Starmer, a good and decent man who was so unfit for his post and will be remembered as yet another failure at the top job.

I think Kemi often displays emotional intelligence which we don't usually see in politicians.
Yesterday she appeared to understand the feelings of KS and showed him personal warmth.

I too agree. A fine figure to lead the opposition. Whoever is in power we absolutely need strong opposition.

I disagree, he was fit for his job and he leaves a legacy of good things.

What he didn’t have was a good strong team around him and anywhere near clear or loud enough PR/Comms teams.

Shabana gets the Chancellor job so where does that leave the migrant crisis? She was the only one doing anything about it.

Under guidance clearly from her PM, so let’s hope AB is not only a “fit” good strong pair of hands, but a good leader!

orly Thu 16-Jul-26 13:47:01

If he was asking good as he and other said he was why was he forced to step down. It's always a case of false platitudes at such times. I say "Good riddance" for all his failings which outnumbered his succeses

Babsbada Thu 16-Jul-26 14:09:48

Yes I agree that Kemi is doing a very creditable job and showing a relaxed, confident and emotionally intelligent style. So sorry to see Starmer go and think he has been treated shamelessly by his own party.
Not a tory voter but credit where its due.

mernice Thu 16-Jul-26 14:11:29

Padstow 18: For me you spoilt your post when you decided to join in with ‘Rachel from accounts’. She has, not the most affluent, pensioner parents and I’m sure she loves them.
It was something that needed doing and the press hyped it up dreadfully.

LemonJam Thu 16-Jul-26 14:11:46

Clearly you're not a fan orly. Your comments however can't take away the honour Macron bestowed on Starmer or ignore the respect and appreciation he was shown in the HoC yesterday - on both sides of the house.

Gango Thu 16-Jul-26 14:18:06

He has been the worst prime minister this country has ever had. For him to make out he has improved anything but doctors salaries and the benefits bill is quite frankly shocking.
Not even sure that the PM elect will be any better. Put the electorate in the driving seat and call for an election

I am sorry to see Keir Starmer leave. The vultures circled and he had no chance against them.

I agree. He didn't stand a chance. He was a good man.

knspol Thu 16-Jul-26 14:32:28

Very pleasantly surprised to see/hear Kemi being so friendly and respectful towards Starmer and also to hear Starmer's comments re private conversations they had shared.
Perhaps the conservatives might begin to rise in popularity if this side of the leader was shown more often. Definitely beyond time to change the weekly bunfight at question time.

winterwhite Thu 16-Jul-26 14:34:44

I like to think that KS has a bright future ahead of him - after a short gap - chairing commissions and the like, to which he'd be much better suited than politics.

It would have been pretty shocking if KB had not shown personal kindness when his brother died and his house was attacked. Nothing to write home about there.

LemonJam Thu 16-Jul-26 14:47:18

I'm sure KS will continue to do positive things once the dust settles. He is a honourable man and an analytical man and came late to politics. His legal career suited him well and charing commissions etc will suit him down to the ground

We had GE 2 years ago- next one 3 years hence!

Mojack26 Thu 16-Jul-26 15:01:20

I agree

Betony Thu 16-Jul-26 15:06:16

I'm wondering if Lord Hermer will continue as Attorney General now. Kier got him a knighthood in order to award him the job via the House of Lords, but our AG didn't get his Chagos deal through before Kier left. I've read (either in Telegraph or Guardian - can't remember which) that Andy Burnham is pro the deal, so perhaps he'll keep Kier's mentor and good friend on to carry it out.

Betony Thu 16-Jul-26 15:07:52

Sorry, didn't mean knightood. Lord Hermer was of course awarded a peerage!

Chocolatelovinggran Thu 16-Jul-26 15:17:37

Goodness, Gango - were you out of the country when Ms Truss was ( briefly) Prime Minister?

LemonJam Thu 16-Jul-26 15:25:33

Truss only lasted weeks and the country was in mourning most of that due to the Queen's death. A lettuce outlived her tenure as reported in the Daily Star- knowing her reign would be very short!

Truss's extremely short PM tenure may have slipped Gango's mind but her mortgage hike misery and market destabilisation legacy lived on. She must be in a prime position for worst PM ever....

jakuss Thu 16-Jul-26 16:04:58

Can you imagine Churchill telling his wife he loved her during a sitting of mps, we have gone soft

graciemabel Thu 16-Jul-26 16:14:21

Mr Starmer was delusionary and singing his own praises about what a good job he had done in the last 2 years. Worst and most hated PM for years but he actually believes his own publicity. The man was a shocking PM and RR a shocking chanceller!
