I think in the past senior police officers in the met were “conflicted” as to “bending the rules “ re what the wealthy,politicians royalty etc were up too. Perhaps some of it will be documented somewhere?

I’m not sure that is the case now as they themselves can be held accountable for misconduct by the public.

And rightly so.

The Royals have always tried to cover up for rogue family members of whom there have been a few through history. A prince who was a spy for Germany for instance.
They hoped the Andrew problem would go away if they paid up.
There has been no choice for them now but to distance themselves from Andrew and leave him to face the consequences of his misdeeds.

No, from the Windsors’ point of view it was paid to prevent it going to court, where all sorts of stuff might have surfaced which could have been ‘detrimental to the Crown’, regardless of whether or not it was true.
I think Virginia Giuffré’s lawyers would have known that a settlement was highly likely, so would have encouraged her to pursue the case, then accept the settlement, thereby ensuring a large commission for them.
If indeed he is charged with the public office misdemeanour, it will not be seen as entirely separate from the sex trafficking issue, which is certain to be mentioned in any trial, and that’s why I think he will be strongly advised to plead guilty to avoid trial, and perhaps get a reduced sentence.

There has been a sea change I believe with the police. And especially now the investigations are not solely in the hands of the Met. Over the years the Met have refused to investigate him properly despite several referrals but the making public of the emails in this instance has really shifted the scene. What needs to happen now is for the royal protection officers to not be part of the Met and for them to be trained as to who they are there to serve ultimately and who indeed pays their wages. Of course make sure that the people they are protecting are safe but that doesn’t include staying in a convicted paedophiles home so that A can do who knows what or going with ‘Ptincesses’ on a gap year

Obviously we have no idea how the investigation is going. As for his title, its removal requires an act of Parliament, just as one is needed to remove A from the line of succession. Personally I’d make both houses sit for a few extra days over Easter and rush through both acts and throw Mone in at the same time.

For those who are not up to speed, the release of the files on the appointment of Mandelson has been sanctioned, and is imminent. There are up to 100,000 documents, and so far it has taken two weeks so far to gather all the relevant information. In fairness to the Cabinet Office, they can’t work miracles.

As discussed before on Gransnet, it is a very difficult process, and not in Starmer’s gift, to remove Mandelson’s title. To fully remove a life peerage, Parliament must pass specific legislation, similar to the Titles Deprivation Act 1917, which was used to remove titles from those who supported enemy nations during wartime.

To clarify, there are two processes taking place. A criminal investigation, and a parliamentary investigation into Mandelson’s appointment as Ambassador.

I think the case against Mandelsson will be more complex and wide-ranging, Gordon Brown is apparently acting as a modern day Sherlock Holmes and supplying the police with information.
Browns wife has been a consistent supporter of women's rights, I imagine they are utterly disgusted with mandelssons behaviour.
