Al Jazeera Media Network is owned by the Qatari government. Specifically, it is a private foundation for public benefit under Qatari law, but is ultimately controlled by the Qatari ruling family. The network's founder, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, was the Emir of Qatar. While Al Jazeera claims its editorial operations are independent, it receives significant funding from the Qatari government, with some estimates suggesting 90%.
