Afghan women are being removed from Afghan society!

Please tell us where we can sign.. I heard about this terrifying new move by the Taliban..

I don't know enough about where Afghanistan figures in world trade/economics etc but given that there has been conflict there with all the 'major players' in the world, and we've come away with bloody noses I shouldn't think the Taliban gives a flying fig.

I'm sure they almost certainly don't, but would be nice, if they ever find out, for the women and girls of that sorry country, to know that there are some people in the world who care about their plight and at least they haven't been totally forgotten and abandoned. Some of us, although completely helpless, do care and do, and will do, what little we can to alleviate their plight.

On balance yes, refuse to play. And try and get a general ban. (but always difficult to decide, as there is always the possible benefit of the players of the country being positively influenced).

I believe I read somewhere that some ridiculous Taliban head honcho has ordered that windows be removed from public buildings where women might be so that they can't be seen. That says a lot about what's in his mind. What a sad and sorry lot! could it get any worse for women. It's why societies such as this are so backward, they suppress 50% of their population and all their potential talent that could be used.

Unfortunately it doesn’t appear to have many signatures.

I can only hope that now social media sites (including mumsnet) are publicising this it will gain some traction.

Now women are no longer able to train as doctors/nurses/midwife’s and Afghani women are forbidden to see male health professionals (no male midwifes) they are condemned to death if childbirth is complicated, along with premature death of easily treatable conditions.

I am just so saddened that the world seems to have forgotten these women…

The Taliban have been eroding any vestige of women's rights since they took control back of Afghanistan. Nowadays females are denied an education. In their law a man cannot deliver a baby. it is only women who can be midwives but that did not stop the Taliban closing midwifery schools overnight a few weeks ago. Women have to be covered head to toe with even their eyes being covered in mesh. They have to have a male chaperone to go out even to buy food and they are not allowed to speak. Afghan women are not equal to or valued by their menfolk. They are only any use for shopping, cooking, cleaning, childcare and sex.
However, the question asks if our cricket team should play there. A resounding NO! from me. We won't change the dreadful lives these poor women are subjected to but neither should we be cheering on our cricketers playing in a country who treat their women in that way.
I am also against the World Cups being awarded to countries with shocking human rights issues.
If we play cricket in Afghanistan it looks as if we condone their way of life.

Signed. If the English National Cricket team play there, then they all are saying that it's ok to treat women like this. Awful.

(I've just checked and found out the match is in Lahore, Pakistan on Feb 26th, so the petition is about playing them at all, which of course agree with)

Signing is about all we can do, but our contempt should be made clear.

If I can find it there is a call to the ICC to enforce its own rule that to participate every country must also have a fully funded women's team. Afghanistan does not. Sporting and other boycotts of South Africa eventually paid off. We must do everything possible to condemn Afghanistan. While we're at it Jonathan Trott, their SA born English coach should hang his head in shame for accepting their tainted money. The cricketers will play them, our footballers and 'esteemed commentators' didn't care about the human rights abuses for the World Cup and I don't expect the cricketers will behave any differently.

So terribly sad. It's beyond our conprehension.

Absolutely appalling situation for these women. They are half the population but can't be seen or heard. They can't even go in their own kitchens if they could be seen from a window. It's crazy. These Afghan men are perverted bullies. This is nothing to do with Islam.
