Did he just compare the language used by government to 1930s Germany? Or did he actually reference Nazi Germany?

‘No presenters or pundits will feature on Saturday's MOTD - BBC
No presenters or pundits will feature on Saturday's Match of the Day programme, a BBC spokesperson says.
Saturday's Match of the Day programme will "focus on match action’.

It looks like even Maudi turned down such a golden opportunity.

growstuff Fri 10-Mar-23 21:47:35

Hmmm! Interesting to see how that works out. The BBC could do the same with politics. A focus on "politics in action" would be novel.

Galaxy Fri 10-Mar-23 21:48:36

Dh says that's his ideal football programme but he is a bit grumpy.

Why be so childish and personal to Maudi ?

Although Lineker is entitled to his political opinions, he isn’t entitled to air them in public with tweeting. He knows this and continues to flout impartiality agreements with the BBC.
He either thought he was above such things or that the BBC bosses would continue to turn a blind eye. They haven’t done and he’s paying the price now.
You may agree with what he says or not, but he has to abide by the same BBC rules as everyone else who works for them.

growstuff Fri 10-Mar-23 22:00:26

So what did he tweet that was only an opinion?

His tweet was factual - or are presenters to be banned from tweeting that grass is green and water is wet?

Wyllow3 Fri 10-Mar-23 22:02:24

Why isn't he entitled, Oreo?

He is not a political pundit or commentator for the BBC, a member of any news or commentary team. He's employed to host a footie programme.

would you silence all who happen to be employed by the BBC including Attenborough because they dont fit the ideologies of the current government?

silencing criticism -free speech - which does not incite to hatred violence as per the law..

.... is a very dangerous road indeed.

Who next? Who will be (to use Bravermans own term)

the next "traitor"?

Oreo Fri 10-Mar-23 22:09:56

I wouldn’t do anything Wyllow3 as I have no job within the BBC.
I simply say what a BBC spokesperson said.It isn’t just political presenters who have to be seen to be impartial in what they say, it’s all presenters.

growstuff Fri 10-Mar-23 22:11:10

Is Alan Sugar to be warned about his tweets?

Did you read Maudi’s posts earlier in the thread Oreo?

Curlywhirly Fri 10-Mar-23 22:22:13

he has to abide by the same BBC rules as everyone else who works for them.

Not strictly true - Lord Sugar was allowed to present The Apprentice despite urging people not to vote for Jeremy Corbyn, and there's also the debacle of the Chairman of the BBC failing to declare his £800k loan to Boris Johnson. Neither of those stepped down.

Oreo Fri 10-Mar-23 22:23:11

Asking another GN poster why they don’t present the footie programme seemed petulant to me.

The chairman of the BBC or anyone else on the board isn’t a well known face constantly presenting programmes.
As to Alan Sugar, maybe he was spoken to and didn’t repeat his mistake.I have no idea, neither does anyone else on this.
The beeb are annoyed with Lineker for repeatedly disregarding rules. He feels strongly enough to go on doing it but has to take the consequences.
Which, lets’s face it, is prob just a temporary suspension.

growstuff Fri 10-Mar-23 22:31:05

Alan Sugar continues to tweet his right-wing opinions, so it's obvious he didn't heed any warnings he might have been given.

Siope Fri 10-Mar-23 22:31:46

In the BBC Charter, ‘due accuracy’ is given as much weight - in fact maybe more, as it comes first - as ‘due impartiality’.

Beyond that - had the BBC really not planned how they would cope with Lineker’s absence? The scrambling around and cobbled together proposal for tomorrow’s MOTD suggests not, which seems like quite a big management failure.

Zoejory Fri 10-Mar-23 22:32:34

I think they want him to apologise.
It's not just Conservatives who weren't upset with the analogy.

I doubt he will apologise.

No idea what will happen. Maybe the BBC just won't bother with it any more. Or just do it without presenters.

growstuff Fri 10-Mar-23 22:32:45

Lineker is stepping back because he "offended" Suella Braverman, not because of any repeated disregard of rules.

But the analogy is true!!!

Lineker is quoted as saying he wasn't stepping back. The BBC told him to step back.

Blimey what a furore over a tweet that most people would never have known about.

growstuff Fri 10-Mar-23 22:34:43

Lots of people get upset when faced with the truth.

And who's created the furore?

Oreo Fri 10-Mar-23 22:35:19

They want him to agree with being careful what he tweets in future, something many people should heed.😄

growstuff Fri 10-Mar-23 22:37:50

Lineker has 10 million followers on Twitter, so I expect quite a lot of them did read it and would have "known about it".

The BBC told him to take it down, but he wouldn't. If they'd have ignored it, it's probable it would have been forgotten about. So who created the furore? And why?

Were you a fly on the wall during the meeting?

The tweet was factual, in any case.

Apologies, perhaps it was. I’ve got no problem at all with different opinions, but her goady posts got right up my nose and I responded in kind when she suggested that somebody with much less experience, skills and knowledge could take on hosting MOTD and do as good a job, hence the suggestion that she could do it.
