Did he just compare the language used by government to 1930s Germany? Or did he actually reference Nazi Germany?

Lots of people get upset when faced with the truth.

Is it really true? Really?

I can't stand Braverman. I think she's quite awful. But what was happening in Germany in the 1930s. Well I don't think it's comparable. They do say once you bring in the war you've lost the argument

My name might give it away but I have elderly relatives who are somewhat shocked by the comparison

Personally I'd not have asked him to step back. I'd have been quite happy for him to stay. I don't like censorship. I don't agree with what the BBC has done but, in my opinion, it was a lazy analogy and has caused upset to people who might have more knowledge than us about language in 1930s Germany

As in America the right wing Republicans are doing pretty much the same thing - deflecting the most most important issues of the day, keeping the electorate in a state of confusion. This is how fascist/authoritarian movements come in and take over.

It is so scary. We (the US) can vote these people out of office - that is IF people turn out to vote! I’m worried too many people are “programmed” only listening to certain media outlets instead of hearing the other side with facts.

Many western countries are feeling, seeing, experiencing a surge of white supremacy, fascism in the ranks.
Vote!

Yes, it is really true. The first statement about the UK taking fewer asylum seekers than other comparable countries is demonstrably true. The second statement comparing the language now being used with that of 1930s Germany can also be shown to be true. It's not a lazy analogy. A number of historians and linguists have written at much greater length than I have the time to do.

They want him to agree with being careful what he tweets in future, something many people should heed.😄

Were you a fly on the wall during the meeting?

The tweet was factual, in any case.

It was on radio 4 this evening, they want him to be clear about what he says on social media.
In any case, it was not factual.
I want a Labour government in next time, but the Conservatives are not fascist nor is our society anything like 1930’s Germany.

growstuff Fri 10-Mar-23 22:51:21

Zoejory How much do you really know about what was happening in 1930s Germany? Lineker compared the language- nothing else. If you can understand German or find some translations, have a look at the transcriptions of Goebbels' and Hitler's speeches from the early 1930s in the beer gardens. Braverman lacks the oration skills, but she's using similar language and appealing to the same kind of concerns. Presumably she'd doing it for the same reasons.

In what way was that tweet not factual?

growstuff Fri 10-Mar-23 22:53:54

In that tweet, Lineker did not accuse the government of being fascist or claim that UK society is like 1930s Germany. He compared the language being used.

Incidentally, if you know anything about society in 1930s Germany, you'd know that there are striking similarities, but that's incidental. Lineker didn't refer to it.

Love all these millionaire lefties, who do not have a clue what the ordinary man on low wages think any more. They are not bothered about losing wages it's just more in the bank or a new car. Immigration will not affect them. Let's face it very immigration won't affect them in their bIg homes, usually in the country. Do hope the BBC is not finished by this, people do not realise how we are the envy of the world for their impartial coverage almost everywhere. It's a constant in most if our lives .
Gary and his crisps will be welcomed by one of those American channels or Sky. Hope BBC stick to their principles.

TiggyW Fri 10-Mar-23 23:12:56

The fact remains that people are dying trying to cross the Channel in small boats. The morons who take their cash for the privilege need to be stopped somehow. Has anyone got any better ideas?
What’s wrong with living in France anyway…?
I do hope that anyone coming to England realises that they won’t find a GP or a dentist and will have to wait 8 hours if they need an ambulance! 🙄

That's not the point. The point is that Lineker's tweet was factual and objective.

Why France? Do you think the French want them any more than the the UK does?

As you seem concerned that people are risking their lives, how about supporting safe routes? (Anybody with the potential to work in medicine, dentistry or could drive an ambulance can go to the head of the queue.)

However, this isn't what Lineker's tweet was about. It was about the language being used.

TiggyW Fri 10-Mar-23 23:21:07

So Lineker thinks it’s acceptable for people to cross the Channel in unsafe boats?

growstuff Fri 10-Mar-23 23:21:43

Incidentally, how is somebody a moron for making money? Immoral, but not moronic.

No idea. That's not what he tweeted about.

MaizieD Fri 10-Mar-23 23:22:18

A lot of people have got better ideas, TiggW but the tories aren't actually interested in better ideas. They have found what they think is the perfect issue and the perfect 3 word sloga (Stop the boats) to win back voters when their polling is very, very low. Their Bill is perfectly named, it's 'illegal' and most likely completely unworkable. It is also inhumane, penalising the victims of the traffickers while doing little to catch the traffickers.

growstuff Fri 10-Mar-23 23:37:38

BTW Zoejory My first undergraduate degree was in German and I spent weeks studying 1930s Nazi propaganda in some detail. I don't claim to be the most knowledgeable person on the planet about the subject, but I reckon I know more than most people.

There's a clip somewhere of a holocaust survivor challenging Braverman about her use of inflammatory language, after which she refuses to apologise. I find it quite odd that anybody who was personally affected by 1930s German policies can't see the parallels between the language used then and now. The seeds of what later happened were sown in the language used in the Munich beer halls of the early 1930s.

What safe routes are you suggesting?
My point about France was that it must be a very unattractive country to live in if people are so desperate to leave it in an unsafe boat.

How about accepting the original offer from France to allow people to apply for asylum from France? Those who are accepted could then be given a visa and travel on any of the ferries crossing the Channel.

Exactly! It's not really about finding a workable solution.

It's about the Tories latching on to an issue which they think can win votes.

growstuff Fri 10-Mar-23 23:46:03

And now the smearing and attempted undermining of Lineker as one of the "elite" is ramping up a gear in the Express.

Siope Fri 10-Mar-23 23:57:35

MOTD commentators are now refusing to work tomorrow. They have also pointed out how sad it is that the media focus is on Lineker’s tweet and its aftermath, and not the dreadful language and legislation that provoked it.

They, of course, are very far from millionaires - their starting salary is under £20k, and the most experienced/senior earn around £80k if they work full-time.

My husband is delighted. He said he wants to watch the football, not, in his words, 'listen to that lot'.

Well done to Ian Wright and Alan Shearer.

The BBC must be neutral must it? And yet the Chairman of the BBC has given significant amounts of money to the Conservatives, expressed his views on Brexit and was involved in helping Johnson get a loan.
