Did he just compare the language used by government to 1930s Germany? Or did he actually reference Nazi Germany?

Mamardoit Fri 10-Mar-23 19:12:15

Well it does give someone a bit younger a chance. Many very able presenters (even ex players) would do just as good a job for less ££££££. His mates coming out in solidarity will give a couple more a chance to shine too. To me GL is a local lad made good. He's done well but he's not so special he can't be replaced. Maybe he could stand as an MP. Although I'm sure it's easier to sound off on social media than to deal with real problems.

JaneJudge Fri 10-Mar-23 19:12:27

it is to quite a lot of men

Forsythia Fri 10-Mar-23 19:14:53

That’s as may be JaneJudge but not ALL men. And not ALL men agree with saintly Gary.

It’s just a tv programme. If they all pull out I’m sure there will be others who’d step in. Personally I think Gary and friends should host several families from the boats in their own homes, not just one for a few weeks. Or as Maudi has said, all go to Calais and offer their services.

They’re just ex footballers. Millionaire ex footballers.

So how do you feel about Rashford taking on the government on the issue of free school meals? And winning?

What with this and Attenborough - this is the Tory culture war in full cry.

Yes, it is. Because it will attract back those Red Wallers who helped to give the Tories their majority.

It's a war on 'woke'... and the campaigners are among those very individuals who cried 'foul' on cancel-culture and no-platforming, frothing about the loss of free-speech.

Immigration via the Channel is a problem that needs dealing with - in fact it's an international problem, because it's a crisis brought about by war, persecution and the effects of recent climate changes, and not least the poverty that ensues. We need a world summit on the issue IMO because we have to accept the reality, that's the bigger picture. But Braverman and the rest of them have hijacked this issue and are using it as electoral bait.

Never mind the increase in deaths - which doubled in 2022 - due to ambulance delays, the crisis in the NHS, mental health services, housing, cost of living... look over there at those immigrants 'invading' our shores...

The plans won't work, I really don't think they will. But never mind - we've identified the scourge, couple that with economic fear and uncertainty, and the Tories have their election 'manifesto'. Lineker was right.

Forsythia Fri 10-Mar-23 19:23:22

MayBee I think people who have kids, lots of them, should feed their own families. Rashfords game went downhill after all the publicity and he got mocked for not taking the day job seriously. Now, he is supposedly back to form although last weekend’s game might suggest otherwise.

He’s a Fox not a Saint Forsythia.

I actually this could be Braverman’s biggest own goal so far, it’s not going to go away.

Zoejory Fri 10-Mar-23 19:23:29

I'm interested to see if anyone will be willing to present it.

My grandson talks endlessly about football. He'd do it for half the price.

That will be an enormous loss won’t it.

JaneJudge Fri 10-Mar-23 19:24:15

grin at not all men
I reckon all men that love football on BBC will be pretty fucked off

Are we going to live in a world where all Gen X and Gen Y get cancelled by their stuffy parents and woke kids? wink

We will see Caslon.. I bet plenty do support the government trying to reduce these boats and the billions spent on housing them, mostly men, in hotels with free accommodation, NHS care, free meals, pocket money and freedom to roam around our towns and cities doing…..what exactly?

“The blunder the BBC is making is believing it can appease the Right. It can't - the Right wants the BBC to fail and always has. But by trying to appease the Right uthe BBC is alienating the Centre and the Left who once wanted it to thrive. And is signing its own death warrant.”

Well, as she often does, yes it will, given all the main presenters have pulled out. This is big.

Neither will Shearer or Wright. BRAVO.

And shame on anyone who agrees to replace them or to appear.

Forsythia Fri 10-Mar-23 19:29:08

Legends in their own minds. Plenty more presenters would love that job. Bullying comes to mind. Don’t you dare put your head above the parapet or you will offend Gary and his cohorts. He should offer his whole house up. Until he does, it’s all hot air.

JaneJudge Fri 10-Mar-23 19:30:08

or put your head above the parapet and be sacked/cancelled

I bet the BBC have been told by the government they have to do this, they are caught between a rock and a hard place.

I think those on here who are exercised about the boat migrants think that is a bigger issue to the public than football, but they will be proved wrong I think.

Galaxy Fri 10-Mar-23 19:31:24

The BBC has been flailing for years, I think still it would be a mistake to want its demise.

Wyllow3 Fri 10-Mar-23 19:32:07

Its a very big part of our cultural fabric - yes there are homes where its never viewed but for example although I wasn't a footie fan my DH and DS were and it was part of what happened on Saturdays in so many families and it was Linekar at the heart of it.

BTW he doesn't need the money but all the same he has stayed loyal to the BBC despite offers to move across to Sky etc.

Maudi Fri 10-Mar-23 19:35:01

I'm sure there is plenty of new talent waiting in the wings to front MOTD for a lot less money. I'm surprised all the sainted Gary supporters aren't up in arms about his salary or is he so wonderful that he deserves every penny of his £1.3m plus salary.

Doodledog Fri 10-Mar-23 19:35:50

To me GL is a local lad made good.
What does this mean, please? Isn't everyone local to somewhere, and what's wrong with 'making good'?

Siope Fri 10-Mar-23 19:36:04

Or presented by Adrian Chiles
A proper sport journalist (and WBA fan)

Adrian Chiles, Guardian columnist and husband of Guardian editor, Katherine Viner? Seems fairly unlikely he’d want to.
