Did he just compare the language used by government to 1930s Germany? Or did he actually reference Nazi Germany?

Blimey

What about Free Speech? It now appears to be missing in this country. Will the BBC be telling their employees how to vote in future

Maudi Fri 10-Mar-23 18:33:02

Perhaps now he's got some spare time he might go over to Calais volunteer at CareforCalais actions speak louder than words.

Do you Maudi?

Maudi Fri 10-Mar-23 18:34:56

No I want to Stop the Boats not encourage them. Do you?

Whitewavemark2 Fri 10-Mar-23 18:36:41

We all want to stop the boats, surely you understand that small detail?

Casdon Fri 10-Mar-23 18:37:07

I gather he is freelance and not a BBC employee but his enormous fee is courtesy of the licence payers so he should abide by the BBC’s ethos and remain impartial.

Just like Alan Sugar? Jeremy Clarkson? Fiona Bruce? Amongst others.
.

Nannytopsy Fri 10-Mar-23 18:46:29

On the BBC he DOES remain impartial. He has every right to tweet.
Don’t think he has been to Calais but he has hosted asylum seekers.

Mollygo Fri 10-Mar-23 18:48:06

Unsurprisingly, if I made that post on my Twitter or FB account (both of which carry my name), I would be at least reprimanded in school. DfE says
“We're issuing new guidance to support teachers in educating pupils on sensitive issues in a politically impartial way:”
The fact that I wouldn’t be discussing it with children wouldn’t stop any parents accusing me of doing so.

Galaxy Fri 10-Mar-23 18:49:03

Hes not the first person this has happened to. They are completely lost on the issue of free speech.

Galaxy Fri 10-Mar-23 18:50:21

Yes if you apply this to the BBC are you going to apply this free speech ethos to all jobs. I would un a heartbeat but I doubt many others would.

Galaxy Fri 10-Mar-23 18:50:47

In a heartbeat even.

LadyHonoriaDedlock Fri 10-Mar-23 18:51:14

When I was at school we had teachers on both sides of the divide being open about their political views in class. Somehow we coped with it.

How do young people learn about different political points of view without being exposed to them? Probably not at home where they will most likely be in a political monoculture.

MOTD in meltdown

Alan Shearer

I have informed the BBC that I won’t be appearing on MOTD tomorrow night.

LadyHonoriaDedlock Fri 10-Mar-23 18:58:29

Ian Wright and Alan Shearer have now pulled out of Match of the Day. This one is going to run and run.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 10-Mar-23 18:59:54

What with this and Attenborough - this is the Tory culture war in full cry.

Kate1949 Fri 10-Mar-23 19:02:33

I don't know much about Gary Lineker but I believe he has taken some refugees into his home.

Galaxy Fri 10-Mar-23 19:05:48

I would be utterly delighted if this led to all professions being free to express their views without fear of consequences to their job, it wont though.

JaneJudge Fri 10-Mar-23 19:07:37

I think men will be more bothered about the cancelling of men so it might help al of us

No: weary and very concerned about whats happening in terms of "culture wars" against those who would speak up against the current regime.

The current conservative leadership, in order to try and get those red wall type votes, are using old old tactics, bringing out the worst in human nature and against an accepting, multi cultural, inclusive society which loves and appreciates difference by whipping up hatred against certain groups.

Forsythia Fri 10-Mar-23 19:08:29

It’s just a tv programme. If they all pull out I’m sure there will be others who’d step in. Personally I think Gary and friends should host several families from the boats in their own homes, not just one for a few weeks. Or as Maudi has said, all go to Calais and offer their services.

They’re just ex footballers. Millionaire ex footballers.

JaneJudge Fri 10-Mar-23 19:09:34

it isn't just a tv programme, it is football

he is already hosting refugees in his home

Forsythia Fri 10-Mar-23 19:11:32

He has hosted two individuals. No more than that. It’s just a programme. Funnily enough, football isn’t the be all and end all of everybody’s lives.
