She’s stepping down, no matter who is selected as the next leader of the Labour Party.

I think it’s a vote catcher quite honestly.

There is not one racist comment on this thread...

Trisher
If you think there is, report it.

Diane Abbott has always been incompetent (that's being kind: considering she supported the IRA: She admitted it).

Victims of the "Troubles" will probably think much worse of her than me.

MaizieD Mon 24-Feb-20 20:19:40

I wouldn't bother to feed it, trisher

trisher Mon 24-Feb-20 20:22:10

You are perfectly entitled to dislike her or her policies Fiachna50 but she has been a ground breaking politician and has acheived much coming from a working class background and going to Cambridge. If people won't acknowledge that there must be a reason. I hate Farage but will freely acknowledge that he is responsible for us leaving the EU.

Greymar Mon 24-Feb-20 20:23:51

Is it my imagination or have some comments been deleted by HQ. I wonder why?

trisher Mon 24-Feb-20 20:27:02

Funny isn't it people seem to think racism only consists of saying "I hate her because she's black" They don't seem to realise that it is enshrined in the negative and critical things they post and their inability to give credit where it is due. I do wonder if they ever examine their own motves and prejudices.

ananimous Mon 24-Feb-20 20:31:54

What I find hilarious is that you have no idea what colour ANYONE on this thread is.

Admit it, Diane Abbott is just a duff MP.

grin

ananimous Mon 24-Feb-20 20:32:57

My tinny comment was deleted.

wink

ananimous Mon 24-Feb-20 20:35:59

she has been a ground breaking politician

Lol!
She tried to muzzle the press using her money, over the reporting of her son's assault on an emergency worker.

quizqueen Mon 24-Feb-20 20:36:11

I expect none of the prospective Labour candidates would want to offer her a ministry job and that is why she has said she wants to be back bencher. Her claim to fame is that she was the first black woman MP, I believe, but that was because she stood in a very safe Labour majority constituency, nothing to do with her ability or lack of, in my opinion, as any Labour candidate would have been elected.

I have no experience of what she is like as a local MP so do not know if she is any good at her job there but I think she has been a pretty poor Shadow Home Secretary and seems to have very little grasp of the facts. However, she has had to put up with a lot of direct nastiness and that is unacceptable for any MP. She has got staying power, I'll give her that!

Chewbacca Mon 24-Feb-20 20:39:03

I think that would be true trisher if MPs such as Priti Patel and Sajid Javid hadn't also been criticised on other N&P threads. They've both been discussed, criticised and applauded, by all sides of the political spectrum, but their ethnicity or the colour of their skin has never come into it. I don't believe Diane Abbott should be spared from criticism just because of the colour of her skin either. The criticism is because many people, including me, don't admire her because she's not been very good at her job and she has demonstrated hypocrisy whilst in office. But that doesn't seem to be acceptable does it?

trisher Mon 24-Feb-20 20:40:32

ananimous her constituents don't think so 62% majority

tickingbird Mon 24-Feb-20 20:43:14

Keith Vaz and respected politician in the same sentence! Seriously? Rent boys, orgies, snorting cocaine. I suppose some of us have totally different ideas about being a respected MP. As for DA she’s gone before she’s been pushed. Incompetent and a hypocrite of the highest order.

Anniebach Mon 24-Feb-20 20:43:24

trisher you have never critcised a black tory MP ?

Fiachna50 Mon 24-Feb-20 20:45:42

Trisher, you are talking nonsense. I am now withdrawing from this thread. I do not take kindly to insinuations that I am racist. However, it seems to be the way now. If you criticise a black person, you are racist. If you voted Leave you are racist. It now seems you cannot comment on any topic, or you are racist. How do you know what colour I am or anyone else on here is?My criticism of Miss Abbott was constructive, nothing sinister. I just think she is not a nice woman, has made dubious comments regarding race herself in the past and was not able for her job within the Shadow Cabinet. Nothing to do with colour and everything to do with ability.

Chewbacca Mon 24-Feb-20 20:48:59

Accusations of racism are easy arrows to fire when you've got nothing else in your arsenal.

Because they’ve been reported by the usual suspects. I was informed a while ago by GNHQ that they don’t monitor the forums and act when members report them. You know like school prefects. I find it hilarious along with the postings of unanimous on this thread.

I think you will fnd that the criticism of PritiPatel and Sajid David referred to their policies. Now it's fine to say you don't like her policies but all this 'Oh it's a safe Labour seat oh I don't know what she's like as a constituency MP is just guff. If you .wanted to know you could Google it. But then you'd have to admitt she's popular and has increased her majority And it wouldn't harm to admit that when she was first elected the H of Commons was a sexist racist place.

Greymar Mon 24-Feb-20 20:58:35

Well I find it absolutely objectionable that somebody should lay into another person about a drink , over and over again and suggest in a snide way that is was to do with DA diabetes. Can you imagine the hilarity of somebody had been seen in public taking 2 Anadin or even appearing coked up on TV?

Nothing to do with race or lefties. I don't particularly rate her contribution. But even for this place, there have been some very very low blows.

trisher Mon 24-Feb-20 21:00:51

Incidently some of the biggest critics of Priti Patel are the children of immigrants who see her as destroying the society that gave their parents a place of safety and opportunity.

suziewoozie Mon 24-Feb-20 21:01:42

Well I think Maizie has a point. Leave them to keep
on kicking until they disappear in a puff their righteous prejudiced indignation.

tickingbird Mon 24-Feb-20 21:05:54

Greymar for what it’s worth I didn’t manage to read the comments by unanimous that were deleted but unless it’s something absolutely despicable I have no time for deleting comments. You were all being wound up by unanimous. DA isn’t reading this - it’s not twitter.

AnAmnesty Internationalreport found that in the 2017 election campaign, Abbott was the subject of almost half of all abusive tweets about female MPs on Twitter, receiving ten times more abuse than any other MP.
Her constituents have increased her percentage of the vote, even when more people vote! So the idea that she's a poor MP is just daft. Abbott has won Parliamentary Speech of the Year, so she's an impressive parliamentarian.
Given the current concerns about online abuse, I believe she is a prime example of the media deciding she's a target, and people believing the relentless rubbish the media perpetuate. The papers constantly go back to old faux-pas of hers, in a way they don't with white, male MPs.
We, a predominantly female group, should laud our first black woman MP, a diabetic, a full-time working single mum, who has broken down class, educational, sexist and racist barriers, a trailblazer in so many ways, rather than mud-slinging.

tickingbird Mon 24-Feb-20 21:08:10

My post of 20:54. I did wonder how long that one would last ?????

lemongrove Mon 24-Feb-20 21:08:45

Chewbacca ??????

Whatever kind of MP DA was in the past, it has to be acknowledged that she has done very poorly as a member of the shadow cabinet ( illness or anything else) and that Jeremy Corbyn appointed her and then kept her on, long past the time that she should have retired.
Now it’s time that he retired too.
