Remember when you bought a loaf of Mothers Pride , buttered (or marged) it and made ham or cheese or fish paste or (posh this) egg mayonnaise sandwiches? Now a single sandwich costs more than the MP, butter and the fillings. But some are really worth it. Favourites? Bacon, Brie and cranberries or Coronation Chicken for me. Humble cheese and pickle too as long as the cheese is sliced not grated which always tastes of sick to me.
Is it just me who doesn't like sweet stuff on sandwiches? I'd never dream of putting banana on a sandwich, or even jam. It's got to be savoury every time.
Oooo. Sandwich spread. I’d forgotten about that, and I used to love it! I couldn’t do without good old Philadelphia cheese in a sandwich - with cucumber and salad cream, with beetroot and salad cream. And my fave bought sandwich is cheese and onion, paired with a bag of salt and vinegar crisps. I also like a vegetable finger sandwich with cheese, salad and (of course) salad cream.
Yes, MissInterpreted, having read these I've become aware that other people eat sweet sandwiches and , like you, I see them as savoury. Maybe that's what I grew up with? Now that I have family in Scandinavia, I do like a fancy open sandwich , or smorbrod.
On our way to visit DH's mum in Windermere we used to stop off at a local pub for a sandwich and bowl of chips. Always had a ham, brie and Dijon mustard and a prawn mayo and apple and the chips were best ever. I still do a version of the ham sandwich when I can get some really good white bread.
My favourite Pret a Manger sandwich has Italian prosciutto, sliced tomatoes, Italian matured cheese, mayo, basil or rocket and baguette. Special treat, relatively easy to recreate at home!
Having an egg intolerance I find it almost impossible to buy sandwiches as they all seem to have mayo in. I have just discovered vegan mayo for home made sandwiches.
Where do I start? I could live on sandwiches. I love bread, all sorts of bread. Favourite fillings, egg, cress and tomato mixed together with salad cream, not mayonnaise. Ham and piccalilli. Bacon brie and cranberry panino. (But not until my gallbladder is removed) Tuna and cucumber. I could go on and on!
