Small cakes (with buttercream/water icing topping) sell well in a poly-bag of five for about two pounds.
Bags people go to Spring Fairs etc for an outing as much as anything! picking up the odd book, plant, bit of bric-à-brac, and a nice cake for tea. You don't get the same satisfaction from a visit to Waitrose. 
Are we repeating the "great depression" of the 1920's?
