One would go good dog rather than good boy.

God forbid! wash your mouth out shock another here taught by Catholic nuns absolutely no slang or profanity of any kind, even the mildest would have been positively vapour inducing.

I need to find my glasses as I read slang as shag 🙈

Daddima Fri 17-Jul-26 16:44:39

None here either, and I still remember P3 teacher’s contempt for the words ‘get’ or ‘got’. I still try to avoid using them!

I agree with *Sago. We had to speak properly or there were consequences.

I went to Grammar School in 1948.
All the teachers were definitely from the upper classes.
Some were quite ancient but young or old they came from the same mould.
They wouldn’t know what slang was if it was repeated and explained, it would have been irrelevant in their lives.

We were not allowed to use “nice” not in written essays nor in our speech!

I dont know about slang, but my form teacher throughout secondary school was big on plays on words and insults.

The only ones I remember now are that he always referred to a classmate with the surname Ashton as Trashpan, and called people things like 'knucklehead' or 'gimmer' if they had displeased him - accompanied by a flying blackboard eraser, something done by several of our teachers back then (70s).

I know from Facebook that he was actually very popular, but at that age I perdonally didn't appreciate his form of humour one little bit.

Nevertheless, again from Facebook, I know that he was a good teacher and a lot of his former pupils really liked him, and he was certainly the only teacher in that school (apart from my French teacher!!!) to teach me any English grammar whatsoever , even though that wasnt his main subject.

No slang from my grammar school teachers. They wouldn't even let us use the word 'nice' in essays.
