I know we have been lucky in that the start of October was mild, and that now we are back to more 'seasonal' temps ..BUT, I don't know if it is because I've been used to being relatively warm, but now it's plummeted I can't seem to adjust.I've felt really chilled the last few days and have felt cold in bed.I feel it's 'Too early' for me to feel like this and I don't really want to take any of my winter measures just yet !! Is it just me ?

In spite of being down south, a 13.5 tog duvet is now on my bed. The central heating went on at 20 degrees, twice a day from last week. I packed away my summer P.J.'s and got out the long-sleeved and long legged ones!!

I've never owned an electric blanket - but it does sound rather nice. I am tempted.

My house is an older house. I feel the cold - so a lot of my pension does go on the heating bills in the winter! It must be good to live in a modern, highly insulated property.

Hot water bottles are a brilliant money-saver and you can have them in the bed or while seated.

When my now adult DS was at primary school he had a fierce PE teacher who taught him football while wearing a coat in winter. The kids were freezing in flimsy sports gear. DS was never a sporty person anyway and hated it! My late DH suggested to him that the teacher probably wore the coat to cover up the fact that he had a suspended hotwater bottle under the coat. This added to DS's angst!

We both agreed that our sitting room looks like an old peoples home due to the number of blankets and throws scattered around. Other half feels the cold more than me but the heating comes on on Nov 1st . The cat helps by sitting on his knee. Plus he is told to wear more clothes .

Yes, really been feeling it even with fleece on and 2 pairs of socks. Have been putting the heating on an hour here and there. Pretty sure it is me feeling it a lot more.

I'm a Southern Girl, born and bred. When DH retired and "we" (he) decided it would be good to move closer to his family, I foolishly went along with it. Now, 20 years later, his people are all gone and I've been living several degrees below my comfort line. This year, I've been feeling the cold since the final heatwave ended. I hate it.
Still, there's a minor comfort: The shortest day is only 8 weeks away, then I can start counting back up again. (I know that's only light, not heat, but I'll take any compensations where I can.)

The Madrid Capital ..

Rained most of the day and was quite damp and thus, quite chilly even though it was between 20 and 25 centigrade.

I omitted to mention that his family have all either died or moved away now, so how pointless was the move here? sad

Heating on and electric blanket in use in Hampshire, Raynauds is back 😕

Raynauds never goes away, for me it is severe summer and winter. The heating is on and has been for a couple of weeks.

I just wanted to say that an electric blanket is different to an electric heated throw. That's if you didn't already know of course.

Maybe this would be of help to some of you.

I'm not glad so many of you are cold but I am glad that it's not just me being pathetic !
So nice actually to read this thread as some sounded really cosy and now I don't feel as bad about adding an extra layer here and there, I was telling myself it was too soon, but I guess, if you're cold you're cold .

I lit the log burner for the first time today. My OH is disabled and feels the cold. I’ve changed into a tee shirt!!!

Granny42 Mon 19-Oct-26 20:58:38

I am lighting the fire in the Midlands and taking my hot water bottle to bed, I’m sure you’re right that we have a climatized to the heat

TillyWhiz Mon 19-Oct-26 23:00:51

Hotwater bottle at night under 9 tog and bedsocks on here in south. Bathroom radiator is on for cosiness. Got the woodburner prepared today in case I need to light it when this rain comes and temp down to 12C

JenniferEccles Mon 19-Oct-26 23:30:37

It’s now getting towards the end of October so colder weather is certainly to be expected, and in fact welcomed as far as I’m concerned!
After the baking hot summer we’ve just had I’m certainly not complaining about the chilly temperatures.

A few others have said that their heating is on all the time controlled by the thermostat, and that’s the same here.
For the last couple of weeks or so it’s come on first thing, then if it’s a sunny day it tends to shut off until the evening.

The electric blanket is also back on !
I’m sleeping so much better than when it was almost unbearably hot at night.

I think I’m going to enjoy this winter.

AGAA4 Tue 20-Oct-26 10:21:59

I prefer colder weather. As JennifercEccles said those unbearably hot days in summer are much worse.
It's cold and wet here today so the heating was on for a while earlier. In the evenings I have my heated throw and so far haven't used the heating after evening meal.

There is a seven day yellow warning for rain and wind in Wales from Friday due to the incoming storm, I don’t know if it’s the same UK wide. I wonder if people will feel glad it’s anutumn after that, I certainly won’t, storm damage is much worse than heat for homeowners.

AGAA4 Tue 20-Oct-26 11:16:32

Storms are very frightening but so are wildfires and some people's houses caught fire in the worst of the heat.
There's danger in both very hot and stormy weather.

Casdon Tue 20-Oct-26 11:20:00

I think that storm damage affects thousands more people every time though AGAA4? All the forecasts are saying we’re in for a very rough patch this autumn - let’s hope they have it wrong.

AGAA4 Tue 20-Oct-26 12:04:46

I agree storm damage does affect many but thousands died of heat related illness in England alone during the hot summer.
Some die in storms of course but property can be repaired so not as bad as loss of life.

Casdon Tue 20-Oct-26 12:22:02

That’s true, there were nearly 3000 excess deaths this summer. Neither are desirable.

Move back to us! 😁

M0nica Tue 20-Oct-26 15:57:41

If like my dh you have serious heart problems then extreme heat is very dangerous. Most summer excess deaths happen to those with heart coditions

I've been feeling cold for a few days and have had a hot water bottle for the last two nights. Lovely! I find it very comforting and it helps me sleep. I suffer from insomnia, and have done for over 30 years, since my divorce, and sleep very badly. I wake several times a night, so am always tired.
