Home Schooling - Pros and Cons

From another thread mentioning this..

For me Home Schooling is very worthy of debate.

I’ve had some colleagues and a niece pursuing this route.

The rest of this post is subjective, as it simply reflects my views as an “outsider”.

So, firstly, I think for some parents and children home schooling is absolutely the right route for their child and where it’s done properly it can resolve many issues and work really well for both parent/s and child/children.

There are lots of networks for parents choosing to home school, which allow them to meet up for sports and trips and to socially interact.

There are also educational resources available, invaluable as children get older and parents need “help” with various subjects.

So far, so good.

My concerns however, are the lack of checks and assistance from Local Authorities, mainly down to lack of resource and budgets.

Vulnerable children are at risk as essentially could be hidden away and all manner of abuses taking place.

I think if done purely in the interests of the child/children, with the right support and parents who are able to learn and teach, HS, can work so very well.

When it doesn’t work, I think it’s a disaster and at best leaves a totally uneducated child both academically and socially, and at worst leaves them in danger.

That’s my take, anyone else have any experience or thoughts?

Personally, I cannot think of anything worse than HS my own children grin

^then there is a responsibility for LAs to monitor this.^

But they barely do, do they?

Indeed. But if it is legal to do it then monitoring should be part of that deal

^An important aspect of teacher training is crowd control and discipline - home ed eliminates the need for that.^

Home ed eliminates the need for discipline?
Of other kids, yes. But not the child being home ed.

Of course there is discipline at home! But it is very different from thst needed with say 1500 children herded together in one building!

I feel like I have been waiting for that for 30 years
Maybe it has improved lately?
