Yesterday my daughter and daughter-in-law were busy grumbling about how slow their first house purchase is taking and wishing it would speed up as they signed their contract 5 weeks ago.

Today my sweet DiL, who’s carry DD baby went into spontaneous labour and after waters broke and baby was upside down with umbilical cord separating, she had an emergency C section and then at 13:00 baby Henry was born at 24.9 weeks, weighing 1lb 6oz.

We are all hoping for a good outcome in the end, please pray to whatever God or spiritual being or keep your fingers crossed that baby Henry comes through this.

DD and DiL in shock and baby about to be transferred to a Neonatal Unit in a hospital nearly 40 miles away. This is their first baby and first try at IVF. He’s so tiny (I couldn’t see him but DD sent photos) 😢

Glad to hear Henry is still fighting on. He's a little trooper.
Look after yourself Cossy. Very stressful time so no wonder you aren't very well.

Thinking of you all Cossy. If Henry's in the Homerton it's a wonderful hospital in specific areas of medicine, including care for prem babies. I'm originally a Hackney girl and that hospital has provided superb care for members of our family including two tiny premature babies who went on to thrive. Keeping my fingers firmly crossed and sending Henry and all your family my best wishes flowers

It's such good news that Henry is doing so well. You must be very proud of him.

Morning

A rather horrific and harrowing week at Homerton, long story shortened;

1) Only 1 nurse in NICU with 5 babies, Henry’s breathing tube disconnected twice, second time DiL had to run out of NICU to fetch a nurse as Henry’s heart rate and oxygen levels dropped very rapidly,

2) 3 separate incidences with lack of stoma care, one resulting in my daughter watching waste pour out over an uncovered Henry for 45 minutes as nurse panicked

I travelled to Homerton on both Sunday and Monday to raise my concerns.

Logged it all first with PALs and they arranged for parents, and myself and the other GM to meet with a professor and Matron yesterday.

Luckily I did my research first around policy/protocol/processes in a NICU and Homerton and clinical processes and then fully explained calmly and with clarity.

Result is several apologies, no attempt to excuse or deflect, full clinical update, several pages of notes taken by Matron, and authorisation for me to phone up anytime, day or night, and speak with any member of staff.

Mummies feeling far more comfortable now to 1) ask questions, 2) that any breaches of protocol will both be reviewed and immediately addressed.

Good news is, despite everything, Henry is now a whopping 3lbs and is stable more than unstable.

There are concerns around his eyes and brain bleeds, but almost everything else is now improved.

Very gruelling two days for us all, but well worth it for both our own Henry and every other baby on their wards.

Onwards and upwards thanks 🙏🩵

Well done Cossy; congratulations on brilliant Granny-work with the hospital.

JenniRen Tue 06-Oct-26 11:32:02

That sounds horrific and very frightening, Cossy.
One nurse to five babies in NICU, even if all were stable and ready to go home is contrary to regulations surely?

The other(?) nurse does not sound sufficiently qualified and experienced if she/he panicked.

Thank goodness you are able to stay calm, clearly explain to senior medical staff and that action will be taken to ensure breaches in protocol will not be repeated.

Oh Cossy, you are having to be so strong for everyone. flowers sending love to you all x

Usedtobeblonde Tue 06-Oct-26 12:14:19

What an awful experience for you all Cossy fortunately you are knowledgeable and articulate enough to know how to deal with the situation, I feel many wouldn’t be and that way trouble lies.
I hope the concerns you raised are being dealt with properly and that Henry continued to thrive without you all worrying what is happening when you aren’t there.

fancythat Tue 06-Oct-26 12:17:43

Congratulations for handling everything so well. Especially in the circumstances.

LizzieDrip Tue 06-Oct-26 12:33:48

Thinking of you all Cossy. You’re a warrior Granny 💪 💐💐💐

Wyllow3 Tue 06-Oct-26 12:38:16

Go Cossy, go.

It is a reality across large areas of care that the loving ones need to do some of the joined up thinking and the "noticing bits".

Your family is very fortunate that you can do this. Just be the self that you are, that your life's experiences have made you xx

nanna8 Tue 06-Oct-26 12:46:33

Scary for you all Cossy and it is good things turned out ok. It is surely slow and steady. V
You are a strong lady and I am sure the 2 mums are, too. Hopefully all this will be just a memory soon when Bub can go home.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 06-Oct-26 13:10:33

Well done Henry’s grandma. ✔️

merlotgran Tue 06-Oct-26 13:20:04

Well done, Cossy. I’m sure I wouldn’t have been able to stay so calm in such worrying circumstances.

Bellanonna Tue 06-Oct-26 14:33:05

Well done from me too. And lots of love to the 3lbs Henry!

AGAA4 Tue 06-Oct-26 14:43:22

What a whopper Henry is! Glad you were around to sort things out with the hospital.

Fallingstar Tue 06-Oct-26 14:59:33

What a little Bobby dazzler!!

Parsley3 Tue 06-Oct-26 15:04:50

So sorry to hear about what happened, Cossy. I do hope that there are no more instances like that. Well done to the wee fellow for gaining so much weight. 💐

Whitewavemark2 Tue 06-Oct-26 15:08:05

Had lunch on Saturday with our family’s less than 2lb prem. baby. He is 34 now and expecting his own first child. Such excitement. He is a gentle, intelligent and successful man whom the whole family love.

Jaxjacky Tue 06-Oct-26 15:26:12
