One is an infant school teacher, the other, my DDiL, is a twin, both born at 23 weeks 5 days themselves!

Wow. History repeating itself!
Hopefully Henry will follow his mum and aunt and also flourish 😊

What are the next steps for him?

Next steps

He needs to come off the ventilator, he’s had one bash at it and just was not ready. He is “breathing over the ventilator” so apparently can breathe unaided, but not for long.

They might try again on Friday 🙏🙏, but we’ve all been reassured that this is all very normal.

Once he’s off the ventilator and breathing independently, but with help (CPAP or other aids), then he has to learn to be able to keep his temperature fairly level on his own. His incubator is monitoring this currently and automatically adjusts.

Then he needs to only be on the high fat baby formula and tolerate this well, then the “long line tube” he has with proteins/vits/ minerals will be disconnected.

Then his vitals all have to be pretty stable, most of the time.

At this point he’ll be assessed to be transferred locally to a Special Baby Care Unit.

He will hopefully continue to grow and develop his “suck” reflex further and move from tube feeding to bottle feeding.

Then will come all the additional testing on his eyes and brain to see what, if anything, can done to prevent or minimise damage which will affect his overall development.

All of this will probably take the next 2-4 months. We were hoping he might be home for Christmas.

Then he will need a further operation to reverse his stoma.

But he’s doing ok. He has come such a long way, and his journey will continue.

He has two very capable and loving Mummies, who will do anything they can in their power to give him a good life.

Both now adults, fully functioning and survived this 28 years ago. DiL’s twin now has a 3 month baby herself, luckily full term. Warrior mothers with warrior babies.

Very well done, granny for not only seeing the problem, but helping to alleviate it calmly and knowledgeably for the wellbeing of wee Henry and all the other babies. I truthfully don’t know what I would have done in the same position. And the wee man is now 3lbs!! ❤️

For anyone who watches "Our Yorkshire farm ", the strapping lad 6ft 6 Reuben Owen was 10 weeks premature, born at home and weighed 3 lbs.

It is a reality across large areas of care that the loving ones need to do some of the joined up thinking and the "noticing bits".

What an awful experience for you all Cossy fortunately you are knowledgeable and articulate enough to know how to deal with the situation, I feel many wouldn’t be and that way trouble lies.
I hope the concerns you raised are being dealt with properly and that Henry continued to thrive without you all worrying what is happening when you aren’t there.

That sounds horrific and very frightening, Cossy.
One nurse to five babies in NICU, even if all were stable and ready to go home is contrary to regulations surely?

The other(?) nurse does not sound sufficiently qualified and experienced if she/he panicked.

Thank goodness you are able to stay calm, clearly explain to senior medical staff and that action will be taken to ensure breaches in protocol will not be repeated.
