Why Would Anyone Climb on Top ofThe Empire State Building?

What happened?

Two people, a man and a woman, climbed to the highest point on the ESB and unfurled a banner which read "When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace."

They stayed up there for a while and the man was seen to go down on one knee so he could have been proposing. They climbed down and were immediately arrested.

I won't even climb on a chair!

Scary enough going up the ESB in the lift and going out onto the observation deck 🫣

As the song says.." When you're young and in love " 😂

DD2 was proposed to and engaged on the ESB at midnight (some years ago now).

Because it is there.

I stupidly watched the video earlier this evening and almost threw up with fright. My stomach was heaving, I had to shut the page down. They must be insane!

That’s nice! How did they get back down? Did they base jump?
I can’t watch anything like that as I am frightened of heights, I get the weirdest feeling all the way up my legs.

Oh climbed down! What on the outside of the building?

Because it is there.

That's exactly what mountaineers traditionally say.

I suppose it's as good a reason as any.

Wise words on that banner .

I've been up to the observation deck and like anywhere where heights are involved it induced quite a wobbly sensation. The very famous photograph taken around the 1930s, workmen eating their lunch sitting on a scaffolding plank that projects out from a sky high building with their legs dangling mid air has the same palpitations effect as does anyone taking a daft selfie clinging to a rock with a sheer drop below.

As others have observed it's not only their getting up that spire it's the coming down too.

I am terrified just thinking about this let alone watching it. I imagine some people’s brains must be wired up differently when it comes to heights.
I literally can’t go up a ladder without my knees turning to water.

They are Russian nationals and have performed many similar stunts before. Seems odd that both were wearing black face masks. A safety helmet might have been more appropriate!

Ah, I think I've seen them on youtube, before.
They climb the tallest, most dangerous buildings, freestyle.
Just using their hands and feet to pull themselves up.

There have a been a few deaths, too.

King Kong did it in 1933!😁

They climbed it because it was there. Quite an achievement.

granfromafar a safety helmet would do little if anything falling from that height!

Because it is there.

Nice one.

Of course there are risks but it's comparable with Everest and plenty have died on the mountain ( and not just tourists).

These people are crazy. Brave..... but crazy.

According to an article in The Times about the incident, those words are originally Gladstone's:

....some historians trace the phrase back to the 19th-century British prime minister William Gladstone, who said: “We look forward to the time when the power of love will replace the love of power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace.”

Because it's there
