But two people did.

The video clip on BBC News is more than hair-raising!

I watched it with my heart in my mouth.

Greciangirl Thu 02-Jul-26 16:21:44

Is there a link for it.
If so, I’d like to watch it.

Nanny27 Thu 02-Jul-26 14:52:37

Aah so JH stole it too.😁

Nanny27

Was that saying not attributed to Jimi Hendrix many moons ago?

Yes but has been attributed to Gladstone.

Because they can

jakuss Thu 02-Jul-26 13:49:46

Because it's there

Baggs Thu 02-Jul-26 13:44:52

According to an article in The Times about the incident, those words are originally Gladstone's:

....some historians trace the phrase back to the 19th-century British prime minister William Gladstone, who said: “We look forward to the time when the power of love will replace the love of power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace.”

These people are crazy. Brave..... but crazy.

Grantanow Thu 02-Jul-26 11:27:21

Of course there are risks but it's comparable with Everest and plenty have died on the mountain ( and not just tourists).

Because it is there.

Nice one.

Jaxjacky Thu 02-Jul-26 10:50:28

granfromafar a safety helmet would do little if anything falling from that height!

Grantanow Thu 02-Jul-26 10:18:16

They climbed it because it was there. Quite an achievement.

Oreo Thu 02-Jul-26 08:24:14

King Kong did it in 1933!😁

MissAdventure Thu 02-Jul-26 08:17:21

Ah, I think I've seen them on youtube, before.
They climb the tallest, most dangerous buildings, freestyle.
Just using their hands and feet to pull themselves up.

There have a been a few deaths, too.

granfromafar Thu 02-Jul-26 07:59:55

They are Russian nationals and have performed many similar stunts before. Seems odd that both were wearing black face masks. A safety helmet might have been more appropriate!

Fallingstar Thu 02-Jul-26 07:52:31

I am terrified just thinking about this let alone watching it. I imagine some people’s brains must be wired up differently when it comes to heights.
I literally can’t go up a ladder without my knees turning to water.

TerriBull Thu 02-Jul-26 07:45:21

I've been up to the observation deck and like anywhere where heights are involved it induced quite a wobbly sensation. The very famous photograph taken around the 1930s, workmen eating their lunch sitting on a scaffolding plank that projects out from a sky high building with their legs dangling mid air has the same palpitations effect as does anyone taking a daft selfie clinging to a rock with a sheer drop below.

As others have observed it's not only their getting up that spire it's the coming down too.

Bridey Thu 02-Jul-26 07:28:13

Wise words on that banner .

M0nica

Because it is there.

That's exactly what mountaineers traditionally say.

I suppose it's as good a reason as any.

MT62 Thu 02-Jul-26 00:53:04

Oh climbed down! What on the outside of the building?

MT62 Thu 02-Jul-26 00:51:06

That’s nice! How did they get back down? Did they base jump?
I can’t watch anything like that as I am frightened of heights, I get the weirdest feeling all the way up my legs.

SueDonim Wed 01-Jul-26 23:47:57

I stupidly watched the video earlier this evening and almost threw up with fright. My stomach was heaving, I had to shut the page down. They must be insane!

M0nica Wed 01-Jul-26 22:12:42

Because it is there.

DD2 was proposed to and engaged on the ESB at midnight (some years ago now).
