Do you leave reviews for items bought on line?

I rely a lot on other people’s reviews if I’m buying something on line, particularly from Ocado. It occurred to me that I should be leaving reviews myself because I’m using other people’s. Do you leave reviews, and I don’t mean when you’ve been asked to, just to give your opinion to others.

Whatever the product, I only leave reviews if I think the item is absolutely superb and exceeded expectations or if it's absolutely dire and not worth the money.
The exception is accommodation. I always leave honest reviews of hotels or holiday rentals.

Sometimes.
If something I ordered tentatively, met or exceeded expectations, I’ll leave a review.
If something turns out not to be accurately represented, then definitely.
Other than that, I don’t always bother.

I try to balance my reviews by leaving positive comments as well as negative ones but I find that I have a tendency to be more moved to write a negative review.

No, not really, so guilty as charged. However, if I see an advert for an item I like the look of, I’ll read the reviews on Trustpilot and often see they’re rated 1.8 and almost scammers.

I do if it’s footwear. I’ve got awkward feet, and I rely heavily on what others say before I buy footwear online, so I think it’s only fair to add my own experience.
For bigger purchases, I tend to look at reviews on YouTube, which shows them in use. The DIY and gardening equipment reviews by shed heads are generally very honest.

I do if it is Etsy or Ebay, or other small traders, but not really on Amazon, although I suppose I should because I do read the reviews that other people leave.

I leave reviews occasionally, whether I am prompted to or not. I like to support small independent businesses so I feel a positive review can be helpful in bringing them more work. However, I recently posted a negative review. I had searched the internet for a string of bunting with 10 stars on for a GD's newly decorated bedroom. I eventually found an ideal one with an accompanying picture. When it arrived, what a disappointment. Instead of the brightly coloured stars shown in the photo, I had a string of 7 rust coloured stars, 2 orange and 1 pink. They were not cheap so I posted a negative review and my reason for doing so. I have checked that seller a few times since and there are no negative reviews. They must have a way of filtering their reviews to only show positive ones. So, yes, I do post reviews but read them with a pinch of salt.

I leave reviews and try to be balanced about them. However…

We were asked to leave a review for a builder on a well known site starting with C when he finished a job. We were pleased with the work and with the people doing it, so left a 9/10 review. The following year we had problems with the work that had been carried out. We have had to take him to court and he has had to pay another builder to correct his work. Although we told the review site to remove our score and comments, they have refused. So we no longer read or write reviews for services.

yes I always leave reviews, sometimes on trustpilot, there are a few companies I use who have been brilliant and I do like to let other customers know what a company is like, and if I've been let down by the company, I'll let them know..

Don’t believe everything you read.
There are people who are paid to write malicious reviews.

Always leave a review, or read reviews.
Just bought Bugatti trainers & read reviews afterwards on trust pilot & they are terrible, so just debating whether to take back to store.

That’s terrible 😩
Maybe all the reviews on my trainers are fake 🙏they are super comfy!

No.

MissAdventure Wed 10-Jun-26 13:33:41

Yes, pretty often, as I always check reviews before I buy something.
If it helps someone else, I'm happy to tell the honest truth, warts and all!

I tried to leave a review on Amazon for a blind we ordered that didn’t look anything like the blind advertised and was damaged. But when I tried to post my review it said that it didn’t meet Amazon guidelines when all I had said was what I have said in this post. I did look at the reviews before purchasing the blind but they were are extolling the blind’s many virtues, still, if they don’t publish negative reviews purchasers will never know anything about the quality of the item they are buying.
For this reason I now don’t believe reviews in general.
TripAdvisor is known to be infiltrated by fake reviews raving about accommodation they probably haven’t even visited. And when in a small hotel in Budapest all guests had a leaflet in their rooms saying the guest who co up d write the best review on TA would get a discounted stay next time.
Trust Pilot seems pretty good though.

MissAdventure Wed 10-Jun-26 13:40:11

I've left bad reviews on amazon plenty of times, so that's strange.
I wonder why they didn't accept yours?

Is a mystery. I only said the blind didn’t look like the ad and was damaged and even awarded 2 stars.
Could take it up with Amazon but really can’t be bothered to go down that rabbit hole.

MissAdventure Wed 10-Jun-26 13:54:47

I wouldn't bother, either.
Hopefully a lot of other people who found the same issues have left stinkers of reviews.

They're quite amusing to read, sometimes. smile

True, and also the brilliant reviews.

Oreo Wed 10-Jun-26 13:58:15

I often do leave reviews for Amazon orders, usually good ones as I haven’t had much trouble with items.

I read the glowing reviews for some Thai harem pants for yoga carefully.

Then ,they arrived.

The seams split from just sitting in them .
And I have never known so much dye come out of fabric as if it wasn't fixed .

Never again.

DH and I have clocked up lots of NHS blood tests, telephone check ups etc etc and I am getting a bit tired of receiving texts to review our "treatment".

I expect it is important to the staff and the NHS, but there should be a quicker way. I have a simple phone which accepts texts, but is non smart. So I have to log in to my tablet and rekey the long www. address. Takes a while. If I can spare rhe time I do.

I had a really excellent treatment from staff in the gastro dept of our local hospital. I emailed PALS and said how good they were. PALS replied saying how pleased they would be and how it had made her day. So I was pleased I had made the time to do that.

But reviews about items bought sadly although I read the reviews (with a pinch of salt) I don't always leave one.

Redrobin51 Wed 10-Jun-26 19:18:19

If something exceeds my expectations or conversely isn't as advertised or breaks very quickly I leave reviews. Otherwise I don't bother.

Rocketstop2 Wed 10-Jun-26 19:22:38

Sometimes I do.Not always and yes , like others I read the reviews left by others. It just feels a bit pestery when we are asked for reviews on like a pencil or whatever ! I will leave bad reviews but only after I've given the seller chance to put things right.
