Do you leave reviews for items bought on line?

I rely a lot on other people’s reviews if I’m buying something on line, particularly from Ocado. It occurred to me that I should be leaving reviews myself because I’m using other people’s. Do you leave reviews, and I don’t mean when you’ve been asked to, just to give your opinion to others.

I do, because I have found other people’s very helpful.
One in particular was for a toy dinosaur I was thinking of for Gds aged 2, for Christmas. The review said it hadn’t even lasted until the turkey was out of the oven! So since Gds was still at the chuck-and-bash stage..,

It depends on the item. I ignore all those reviews from courier companies asking about my opinion of their service and deliverer. I usually never see them, all I find is a parcel on the doorstep, so have no idea whether the driver was friendly and the service competent.

Not on ebay. They drive me mad asking for a review for every little thing I have bought. Batteries for my watch, poop bags for dogs, perlease! Waitrose is also annoying, how did I find my sausages, fresh milk, sparkling water? Answer, as I would expect, paying your prices.

I usually put that in my review! Some courier companies operate on a "knock the door and run away" basis. I have a relative who works part time for Evri and she says they read their reviews so it's worth doing sometimes.

I usually review skincare because I have very sensitive skin so hopefully I can help someone else who has a problem buying products like I do.

I do post on Trip Advisor quite frequently and am told my reviews are helpful.
I occasionally post on Marks, Amazon and eBay. It’s all rather time consuming.

Occasionally for clothing. footwear and gift items but most often for restaurants and pub meals.
If we receive a specially nice meal with good service I post a review on TripAdvisor but will also call out a bad experience . I don’t write nasty comments as some do, just factual.

As rarely as possible, though some companies pester you until one is left.
I was told that anything less than 5* isn’t worth anything…

Sainsburys have asked for reviews recently for single items of shopping like a pack of butter! Life is too short!

MissAdventure Thu 11-Jun-26 10:08:23

Oh i don't review those kinds of things, except perhaps if something was epecially expensive, or especially chea

(And only then if I'm putting off doing something- as I am now)

Only once did Ihave a review refused by Amazon as it didn’t meet theirguilines. I was mystified as I had simply said I had to return the blue tooth ear buds as my ears are particularly narrow and they kept falling out. I blamed my ears and not the product.

Lovetopaint037 Thu 11-Jun-26 10:50:02

Guide lines. Also had a feeling that it was the seller who was deciding that they didn’t want the review.

MaizieD Thu 11-Jun-26 11:00:02

I never leave reviews and resent being bombarded with requests for them whenever I purchase something on line. Especially if it for something utterly routine and mundane.

I do leave reviews, positive and negative. Often online grocers ask for reviews of drivers after deliveries and I make a point of saying if they were helpful and friendly.
It is a bit frustrating if you can't alter or delete a review later if the product turns out not to be so satisfactory as you can't usually leave a second review.

Lupatria Thu 11-Jun-26 13:43:23

I was asked to leave a review by sainsburys - i bought loo rolls!! no i didn't leave a review!
too many times have i been asked how my visit to the gp surgery went. no i didn't leave a review.
and i've been badgered so many times by so many websites for reviews that I don't leave reviews any more.

MickyD Thu 11-Jun-26 13:56:42

I used to. I only left reviews if I was happy with the product. I wouldn’t leave negative reviews, I’d rather just not leave a review at all.
Now I don’t leave reviews at all. They’ve sent me the products, I’ve sent them the money. I don’t owe them any more than that so why are they asking for more from me? I’m not asking more from them. Life is too short to be writing reviews.

I read reviews and take some with a ouch of salt. I always leave honest reviews of hotels but but always on other online buys. Where there's been exceptional service that's always posted. What I dislike and can't understand is being asked for a review immediately after placing an order. Err hello!!!

Janash Thu 11-Jun-26 14:19:10

I often leave reviews but always make sure they are honest and always try to say both positive and negative points if possible. I never slate a company or product, but if I have found something really bad I would try to make a helpful comment that could make the service/product better.
I do read reviews before buying, looking to see how many are positive helps and particularly what it is that makes the product good, but negative comments I find less helpful if they seem to have been written in a rage or maliciously. If a comment is wholly negative amongst a lot of positive comments I tend to disregard it.

Bazza I do, I think it’s important but always subjective 🌷

Yes I've left hundreds of reviews. Usually when I'm prompted to from Amazon and also I've put a lot on Trustpilot. I also put them on supermarket products that I've bought. I find it very useful to look at them before I buy anything. Also restaurant reviews. I've just had a really bad experience with a local Indian restaurant takeaway. It's normally excellent and my daughter has used it countless times and when I had my other daughter and her partner here recently I ordered a takeaway. They are vegetarian and what they ordered didn't say it had chicken in, but it did and another dish was supposed to have rice with it which didn't turn up, and another rice I ordered didn't turn up. The chicken dish I had wasn't the same as normal and the chicken was dry. I'm wondering if they have a different chef. My daughter rang up and the man was very rude to her and was shouting at her. I spoke to him and he was rude to me as well, but did say that he would refund the money and that was about 10 days ago and I've not received it, so I'm now having to ring my bank to claim it back. I rang the bank yesterday, but there was a 40 minute wait on the phone so I will have to call back. It is a pity, because I live in a small village, so there isn't a lot of choice with takeaways. And yes, I did do a bad review on TripAdvisor. It was what they deserved. I noticed there were a lot of bad reviews on there saying the same thing that they used to be excellent, but now they're terrible and there are loads of one star reviews. I checked their menu today and they still haven't altered the dish that is incorrectly listed as vegetarian.

icanhandthemback Thu 11-Jun-26 15:32:20

Yes, I always try to find something positive to say but don't hold back with the negative points.

Ukelady1 Thu 11-Jun-26 15:42:46

I quite often leave reviews for online purchases, good or bad. Amazon has never refused one.
What really drives me up the wall is when you get asked “How did we do?” etc when you’ve only done a bit of food shopping! M&S is fond of this. Every time I go there for food, they follow up with an email asking me to rate my visit. I do ignore these!

AuntieE Thu 11-Jun-26 15:56:54

No, I do not. I have better things to do with my time than to provide firms with free adverts. I also delete those infuriating e-mails asking if I was satisfied with the way my recent enquiry was handled, with the commodity I have just bought etc, etc.

Do they honestly believe we have time to answer all that?

If I am NOT satisfied, they can be certain I will be in touch, as indeed will many others.
