Fingers crossed for sleep tonightšŸ¤ž

I am not going to moan about the glorious weather but sleep had been a challenge!

I have shut windows, closed curtains and blinds during the day then opened windows after sunset, yet the upstairs of our wonderfully energy efficient home still feels like a sauna.

We sleep on Egyptian cotton sheets with an empty Egyptian cotton duvet cover and have an Airblade whirring all night and still we are sweltering.

Are there any tricks I am missing?

Praying the Easterly breeze will bring respite tonight.

Our house is hotter upstairs on top floor (townhouse) but as long as we do as you do it’s cooled down by the evening, today there’s been a lovely breeze most of the day. Not had trouble sleeping at all.

We have a breeze just starting here on south coast, and very refreshing it is to.

I know it would not have made a difference when Paw was alive, but I can’t sleep with windows open around the house- it seems such a temptation to burglars. So locked ā€œajarā€ and a Dyson fan are my compromise.
It more or less wins, yesterday morning the temperature in my bedroom was 14C while it was 25C outside.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 27-May-26 20:27:57

Blimey paws my bedroom is never down to 14c even in winter, are you melting ice blocks in there!

I use a couple of dog cooling mats which I alternate, I find if I have a cool head I can sleep better. I’ve got an air blade too, I put a jug of cold water with ice cubes in front of it, so it cools the air down. The other thing that helps is if you can get a through draft through the upstairs in the evening before you go to bed.
I know some people also douse their house bricks in cold water, but I haven’t tried that!

Old stone houses in Wales with thick walls tend to stay pretty cool in this hot weather. Mind you don’t think it has been as hot here during the day as in other parts of the country

MissAdventure Wed 27-May-26 20:56:27

Fill a hot water bottle and put it in the freezer, then take it to bed (the bottle, not the freezer) smile

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Made myself laugh at that.
Could picture a couple lugging a freezer upstairs, all hot and panting and sweaty.... trying to stay cool.

Have a tepid (not cold) shower at bedtime, then after wiping off the worst of the drips, let yourself air dry. It cools the body amazingly. Have a damp face cloth or small towel by the bed to put on your face/body if you wake up in the night.

Hope everyone manages to sleep! šŸ’¤

That's a good idea about the face cloth / towel. It reminded me of the time I had to sleep in my truck during the day in the summer. It had a fridge / freezer. I kept a face towel in the freezer section. It worked rather well.

Thanks for the tips.
I have the bedroom windows open, curtains closed all day, ceiling fan at night.
Going up for a shower now , and will let myself drip-dry.

It was 5 am and the Dyson fan was on med high all night.

Visgir1 Wed 27-May-26 22:01:28

No idea how.. But all this week I have slept like a log, it's hot we have x2 fans on in the bedroom all the windows open but I have been zonked out for a good 8 hours.
Complete mystery!

Charleygirl5 Wed 27-May-26 22:29:10

Last night at 11 pm it was 24C. I thought I was going to die in the heat. I had a fitful night's sleep.

I live in London and am reluctant to open a window during the day because of the number of chancers around here. My house, although modern and well-insulated, is always cold, and now I do appreciate the coolness.

LauraNorderr Wed 27-May-26 22:31:46

A cold damp bath towel on top of the bottom sheet, works a treat. The towel is bone dry when you wake from a cool nights sleep

JenniferEccles Wed 27-May-26 22:32:17

For those of you who have fans on in the bedroom, I guess they are silent, or do they have a slight hum or whir ?

I too have a cool shower just before bed which does help.

The big window is open with a bit of a breeze coming in, so I’m hoping it will be a little cooler tonight to aid sleep.

There’s a lot to be said for winter!

MissAdventure Wed 27-May-26 22:35:00

My fan sounds like a tractor revving up.
Takes a bit of getting used to, but I'm pretty deaf, luckily (?)

JenniferEccles Wed 27-May-26 22:42:23

I think I might give your make of fan a miss then!
I am someone who can hear the proverbial pin drop!

TerriBull Wed 27-May-26 22:43:34

I've moved into a spare bedroom and taken the fan with me, too noisy for o/h, inspite of him telling me his hearing is not as it was, he can hear the whirring, which isn't that loud. Can't be helped I need it on most of the night.

Ziplok Wed 27-May-26 22:50:39

JenniferEccles, the fan we have is very quiet. The brand is Meaco. They are a bit expensive, but work really well. (Not as expensive as Dyson fans and I don’t know how quiet they are).

Its a duronic, so don't buy one of those.
I must say though, it is fantastically robust, and people are jealous of how well it cools the place - better than my friends dyson fan.

Slept so well.

The bedroom felt like fridge when we came up.

Hotter today though😬

HelterSkelter1 Thu 28-May-26 07:46:54

I had a cold zero Guinness and hour or so before bed and I think that helped me sleep. But last night was cooler. Lovely cool breeze at the moment. All doors and windows open.

We also have a Meaco table top fan and it is efficient and quiet and have .a large floor gym type fan by Schallen. Very efficient but is v noisy. Both upstairs to keep the air moving and not gathering in a hot block at the top of the stairs.

My DD says this is a practise run for the summer. So everyones tips are useful. She is in Bangor N Wales and sent me a video of their thunderstorm and heavy rain last night. Made me feel cool just to watch it,

Damp towel on the bed is a good idea as well as a damp flannel close by. I used to travel on the hot Tube with a wet J cloth round my neck....a clean one every day. That helped a lot and was easy to keep in a plastic bag in my bag. Cheap and then I used them in the kitchen so not a waste. Could do that in bed now.
