I am not going to moan about the glorious weather but sleep had been a challenge!

I have shut windows, closed curtains and blinds during the day then opened windows after sunset, yet the upstairs of our wonderfully energy efficient home still feels like a sauna.

We sleep on Egyptian cotton sheets with an empty Egyptian cotton duvet cover and have an Airblade whirring all night and still we are sweltering.

Are there any tricks I am missing?

Praying the Easterly breeze will bring respite tonight.

I find myself humming along with noisy, clunky fans.
A regular squeak and a thunk becomes an endless night of "we will rock you" in my head.

Glad to hear I’m not alone, FYI Lidl has an airblade fan on the middle aisle this week.

I live in a first floor flat and dread this weather. The hallway has no windows as our front door is downstairs (self contained) and the rooms all lead from it. None of the rooms have windows in the right place to create a through breeze if the doors are left open. The temperature in the hallway hit 31 on Tuesday and has only gone down to 27 this morning. It doesn't help that the cat is an indoor cat and my daughter is scared that if the windows are opened more than an inch, it'll get out. This week, as you can imagine, has been like living in the bowels of hell! I've been 'persuading' the cat into another room after the sun has gone down so I can throw the windows fully open in the lounge, at least for an hour or so and walking the dog at sunset with him grumbling all the way. (He's like me - hates the heat!)

Conversely, in winter, the bedrooms freeze and are impossible to heat...

Whoever designed this place should be made to spend a week in it in this heat and another in winter.

Catches i meant.
My brains tired, as are my fingers. smile

It carches up with me, usually with a splitting headache by the next afternoon.
I thnk the headache is early, because I'm just taking some painkilers now.

Esmay Fri 29-May-26 02:45:18

It's not happening here either .
I often doze off during the early part of the evening and wake up at around three -so I might have a few hours.
I 'm not aware of sleeping through -various programmes were on and I watched snatches of them.
That means a horrible day on Friday .
I have lots to do and I doubt if I'll have any energy nor enthusiasm.

MissAdventure Fri 29-May-26 02:01:11

Sleep is not happening here.
Sadly.

I've managed to sleep ok, I keep my bedroom window open..if anyone breaks in they won't take long till they try to escape..
serves them right...I'm not a young thing anymore

There’s no need to worry about it being too warm to sleep in NE Scotland. Though it was particularly warm for here on Monday, (23 deg), by bedtime it wasn’t at all uncomfortable.

I hear that filling a hot water bottle with cold water and put in freezer for a while can help.

My routine in this heatwave is a very cool shower before bed, after which I dry myself and spray with lavender water and spray the bed with White Company white lavender spray. It does seem to work and I keep the fan on low all night. My DH doesn’t mind this routine as he sleeps well too.

Eid Al-Adha started on Tuesday and runs through to Saturday MT and thisismynsme. Possibly explains your fireworks.

Eid celebrations 05Thisismyname1953. I guess all faiths have to tolerate each other's celebrations. My family members encompass several faiths... At least they aren't at war with each other and I have no recognised faith.

I also recommend the Meaco Sefte fan. There is a night mode which is very quiet and gradually reduces the fan power throughout the night.

SillyNanny321 Thu 28-May-26 20:02:26

Should be good not food. Blame my dodgy thumbs 😂

SillyNanny321 Thu 28-May-26 20:01:20

After many years of sleeping in a bedroom with the windows open slightly will not take the chance now of opening windows at night. In a bungalow after moving couple of years ago & still seems strange & too warm. Food job I have a good fan. Dont hear it too much being a bit deaf. So not too bad now!

Plevey08 Thu 28-May-26 19:32:16

I have a small hepa air filter in my bedroom, not really noisy but I listen to a thunderstorm on my white noise machine at night so don't mind a bit of noise. Tepid bath, will drop dry tonight as above. A cold flannel round the back of my neck which really helps lower body temperature 🤒

I can only really sleep in heat if I’m in the bed on my own. I make sure I do something to exert myself a bit in the day, a little gardening or housework, even if I feel very tired. If I sit around too much in the day, I don’t sleep at all at night. I also have a cool shower and use a lavender essential oil roll on my wrists. I have a fan going and cotton nightclothes and bed linen. Despite all of this, I still only sleep five hours max and sometimes less, or not at all in a heatwave. I’ve some to dislike summer and would hate to holiday in a hot country!

WithNobsOnIt Thu 28-May-26 18:04:02

Last night was not quite so hot in the North West. However, we did have quite a lot of really noisy thunder and lightning throughout the night.

Quite frightening

@MT62. Do you know what the fireworks were for. There were some going off very near to me starting quite early and going off at intervals until the thunder drowned them out. I couldn’t see the point of them while it was broadcast daylight . I’m in Cheshire.

I live in a bungalow, where the sun is on the back where my bedroom and the kitchen is, all day. I open the window and the blinds when I get up and since the heatwave started I have slept better than I have in ages, a couple of times waking up at 9.30am. I've absolutely loved this heat. (Sorry)

Bambino Thu 28-May-26 16:08:13

Sleep downstairs while the heatwave lasts?

I’ve been opening my loft in the evening it makes upstairs cooler

Bazza Thu 28-May-26 15:23:30

I have slept ok ish, I have a very cool shower before bedtime, and I have a new fan from Amazon called pro breeze which is excellent nearly silent on low settings.

But I sleep alone and the thought of another warm body by my side fills me with horror! I sleep naked 😱 yes I know, but probbly keeps the burglars away, and with just a pure cotton sheet. My clock thermometer says it’s 82 F but I’m really not uncomfortable.

Blondie49 Thu 28-May-26 15:15:22

Move to Scotland it’s never that heat up here 😅
