Whether they are banned or simply stop contributing it seems this happens reasonably often. It is a shame ,particularly when someone who has been a ‘regular’ is banned and most of us have no idea what caused it. A recent person to be banned never, as far as I am aware, transgressed . Sometimes I think someone with opposing views complains and causes a banning quite unnecessarily and we are the poorer for it. It would be very boring indeed if we all held the same views on everything.

Is the thread people are rearing to as Site Stuff this, it’s the only recent one I can see? If it is, this ban makes even less sense to me, unless posts have been obliterated altogether so they aren’t visible any more?

Yes that was what I was saying. I don't think it can be that one, and some people are also saying it is N & P, not site stuff.

Not that thread
HelterSkelter1
If we dont know what the poster has done to be banned how on earth can we be expected to know to avoid doing it ourselves. Crazy.
These threads should stand so we can see what was said and who reported it. Unless of course it is likely to be picked up by the press.
This has always been my view. If bans are supposed to act as deterrents we need to know the reasons for them. Not necessarily after the fact, as posters might not want a discussion about them in which they can’t participate, but clearer rules about what might instigate a ban. *The spirit of Gransnet’ is far too vague.
I understand that HQ can’t reinstate on the basis of complaints alone, but surely they could take a look at decisions and reconsider? A suspension would be more appropriate than a lifetime ban in most cases.
To be honest, I rarely look at threads with reference to the Topic.
Thanks GG13, it’s helpful to know it isn’t that one.
Which thread is it, could somebody in the know enlighten those of us who don’t know, I don’t think posting a link to a thread is a punishable offence, and we can all support better if we know what’s happened?
I feel completely out of the loop this morning (not unusual) because, until reading this thread, I’d no idea anyone had been banned yesterday.
I was on the N&P thread yesterday and didn’t see anything ‘out of order’.
Totally confused🤷♀️
Oh just seen in this thread that it was Allira who was banned!
Even more confused now🤷♀️
I sort of agree doodledog but I do think it would be quite difficult to write a list to cover every eventuality, I have some sort of sympathy with them on that.
I was once involved in a volunteering group, where one of the volunteers took all their clothes off on the event they were assisting in ( no word of a lie) we hadn't thought to put that in the list of rules for volunteers because mainly we thought most people were sane. We had a guidance around 'behaving professionally' or some such but I just think you can't cover every eventuality.

I presumed it was the N&P thread🤷♀️
If its allira who has been banned, a grave mistake has been made, I think.

Yes it is and I don’t think a mistake has been made, I know a mistake has been made

They weren’t banned yesterday, they were banned last Thursday.
We all think that MissA but who are we?
Just the people without whom there wouldn’t be a GN.
We keep it going with our regular posts.
I am told there thousands of members ,most of whom never post.
Where would GN be without the loyal ones who start threads, post in others threads and keep it interesting and interact with others.
Thanks petra - my confusion abounds!

I have written this before on this thread but I’ll say it one more time.
It is not one particular thread although one particular thread set the ball rolling. It was on site stuff, something about hiding a thread.
The ban mentioned other stuff. One such that can be proved as untrue.
Of course I can’t put that private information here. Much as the member who reported it would love it.
I can be a literary Lysistrata for a week if this will help?
altho I may be banned now anyway, and obliged to be
back with the barracudas

No, you can't, but it could be a lot clearer than it is.
I used to be admin on a discussion board, and the system was that if someone felt a post was out of order they said so in a post of their own and reported their own post for mods to look at. Everyone could see what had happened, so malicious reporting was minimised, and other posters could give an opinion before any action was taken. Bans were incredibly rare, and any infringements were discussed on the thread, so everyone knew where they were. We also had clear advice in the 'about' section about not filibustering to get threads to run out of space, trying not to repeat previous posts because of not bothering to read the thread and so on, so newbies could learn the culture of the board.
It worked for us, but obviously one size doesn't fit all, and it's up to HQ how they operate. I just think that the current way is so obviously unpopular with posters on here that it warrants reconsideration. It feels so random, and there are so few outrageous breaches anyway that it seems crazy that so many regular posters get banned.
I can't get into archives just now, on the phone, but I vaguely remember a to and fro about names, last week.
Can't remember the topic, but it was probably an ordinary Thread.
Again I am not disagreeing but I can see some concerns with that system as well. I do feel there can be a bit of 'following people around on here' and I will be honest and say I would be quite concerned about identifying myself as someone who had reported with some posters. I try not to report but I have done in the past with regard to antisemitism and the obvious weirdos/trolls.
I am completely in the dark about the current state of affairs, but my PM box is accepting messages if anyone would like to tell me what happened? Obviously I now know who was banned, but not what led up to it or who was involved.

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. It can be hard to speak out sometimes, as you know there will be grudges and consequences from some.
I don't think there is a perfect system, as humans aren't perfect.
