Hi, has anyone tried the widely advertised (by "celebrity" women) collagen supplements? Im waking most days now with aching everything, hips, knees, wrists, ankle, feet etc. I have arthritis bit it is getting much worse so I wondered if anyone "real" knows if it works 😉

I don't follow any celebrities so I don't know what you mean. I take marine collagen from Healthspan, bought online and it definitely makes a difference to skin tone and wrinkles. I'm not sure collagen is recommended for joint problems. Do you take vitamin C? You might find that helpful.

I also take Jointace Omega3 with glucosamine because I have arthritis. I'm guess most answers you'll get will be see your GP and I think you should do that too though probably, like most of us now, it'll be a 6 week wait. I wouldn't trust any celebrity, that's just marketing.

There has been another thread on this subject a couple of weeks ago so it might be worth searching for this! I started taking marine collagen almost 2 months ago for exactly that. My own experience is yes it helps. I am taking less painkillers and have the added bonus that it has really helped my nails which were cracking and splitting and I feel as though my face feels plumper. Worth giving it a go though it is a little pricey.

I'm just starting to take collogen...the first month actually....already i can see a difference in my fingernails.... they are growing!!!😊
No difference to the horrid knee pain i have as yet,but early days I guess.
Fingers crossed that at the end of 2nd month I notice a something.

Curiously, there was an article about arthritis remedies, in today’s online Daily Telegraph. The doctor journalist was very lukewarm about the efficacy of collagen.
On the other hand, other than hot/cold treatments and Epsom salt baths, she recommended probiotics (they help reduce inflammation), turmeric, cinnamon (yes, me too!) and TENS machines.
Hope that helps.

Dont waste your money,, I am a scientist and all options are useless, and that includes anti wrinkle cream, a market worth billions

There was an episode about collagen on Sliced Bread (radio 4) a few weeks ago. The verdict was that it's not worth bothering.

I have noticed a marked difference in my ability to rise from a sofa or chair since using Elevate for 2.5 months so far. I’m less achy too. My hair is better …no discernible difference in my skin or nails, however I feel less weary and anything that helps me to move around more easily gets my vote. I agree it’s not cheap however I decided to give it a try, not expecting anything really …and I’ve been pleasantly surprised.

The last time I saw a physiotherapist for an ongoing achillies heel problem, which I had suffered with intermittently for several years, she advised me to try taking collagen. That was over two years ago, and I can only speak from my experience. I have not had any more recurring problems with my heel. For joint pain, I was advised that I need to take type 2 collagen.

Ive been using Nutritional Geeks Coolagen for 6 months now and I have lots of new hair growing it had been falling out and thinning for 4/5 yrs and I can really notice the difference as I now have a hallo of fine hair that sticks up all over my head I wear it up sometimes and the new fine growth is visible to others around my neckline. My nails aren't so flaky either.

I too have used Geeks collagen and noticed I am not so achy. My hair and nails are a lot stronger too so double whammy. Not too pricey if you want to try but I think you need to take it for a while before seeing any benefit.

Collagen breaks down into amino acids in the digestion process and is used by your body as it needs it.

Did buy some marine collagen a few months ago, tried it once mixed in a warm drink and I felt really nauseous so have not continued. Wanted it for nails and hair improvement.

I tried the Elevate collagen but the flavours were awful. Plus it’s almost impossible to mix the powder smoothly

A dermatologist would say that the love moisturiser because it benefits the skin. I have to agree with the dermatologist though I disagree with paying a fortune for moisturiser. As for collagen, I’m sure I recently heard from a TV doctor that it does not help with wrinkles but it does help with keeping skin plumped up. So, you pay your money and take your choice 🤷‍♀️

I would suggest maybe you read some test studies before you decide, this may help www.bbc.co.uk/future/article/20250214-do-collagen-supplements-work. On the other hand it may confuse you even more, some studies show no real benefit, some say anecdotal evidence only and some say definitively that it works. Good Luck.

Collagen is the same stuff as gelatine. The latter is miles cheaper bought as a food ingredient. Make your own jelly with whatever extra ingredients you fancy.

Tooyoungytobeagrandma Sat 09-May-26 16:41:18

Thanks one and all. Whilst my nails are not fairing so well my hair is still thick and wavy and my skin (according to a skin consultant) is is excellent condition. Mind you not sure he noticed the wrinkles and possibly needed new glasses 🤔I have arthritis which is beginning to get more painful especially at night so was asking in case anyone had tried the product. Im not one for believing so called celebrities hence asking on here. So Ill save my £s and spend them on a sunny holiday as the sun/heating always lightens my mood and gives some relief to my aches and pains 😉

I’m not convinced that collagen, especially collagen alone, is the best supplement for arthritis? Customer reviews on the website of the UK company I buy all my “clean” supplements from suggest that things like Boswellia, MSM and maybe turmeric are better. Don’t expect immediate results, but you may be pleasantly surprised.

I have read you shouldn't take if you are on Losartan.
Any scientists care to comment? 😁

I’ve started to take bovine collagen to help my creaky joints!!! I’m hoping it helps!

4allweknow Sat 09-May-26 19:16:12

Been researching collagen for months hoping to reduce effects of arthritis creeping in. Read scientific and medical reports and concluded not to bother with marine, bovine or hydrolised. Certainly not recommended by NHS. The loss of collagen in the body starts in the 20s. Not being scientific just wondered how long it would take to restore body back to anything like a younger version of self taking a tablet or spoonful of powder a day. Just going to save my money.

My Osteopath advised me to take Tumeric with black pepper, to soon to tell if it works
