How Gransnet helps day to day
(41 Posts)I was on the 'phone this morning to a relative who has had a very, very bad year in all ways and they are at the end of their tether. Having been a member of gransnet and read other people's posts and answers, I found myself much more able to put myself in her shoes and provide a safe space for her to speak while I listened. I did add the odd comment but tried to make them as balanced as possible. We all do help each other in so many ways without perhaps evening realising it.
Gransnet is my first port of call over big news items. Although an adequately well-read, educated and thoughtful person, there are all manner of nuances of any given situation that escape me. My views in some subjects have changed through reading others' comments and, at the very least, have broadened.
Gransnet was my safe haven when my house sale fell through the second time. I was at the end of my tether .But I found I wasn't alone instead I found others just like me and the help and support I wasn't given helped me . Since then read and post on lots of different threads. The help I receive I try and pay back by my posts. No idea if my rambles help but some who don't post openly have sent a PM and seems I do help.
It wasn't until I joined GN in March 2019 I realised how much experience I had in various aspects of life. I only ever talk about things from my experience as I would never assume to know how people feel unless it's happened to me.
I am glad to say I have made friends here who I trust completely. Yes there are some on GN that take joy in hurting others but you soon know who they are are and I ignore them as best I can. But on the whole GN is a safe place to talk about anything and for me I am glad its here.
I don’t post often but read everyday and think this is a wonderful place to be xxxx

This is such a lovely post. I read a lot more than I post, but generally find that people are kind and supportive on here - more so than another site which tends to have younger members. Perhaps it's because gransnetters have lots of life experience and know how tough things can get.
I like the buzz of the other site but also like the chat and helpfulness on here and am learning allsorts from older members and those with knowledge like on the horses thread.
Found I changed my thoughts about horses and racing.
Although I live in the States now I was brought up in an Anglophile French Protestant family in Paris and Normandy. We had friends and relations on the other side of the Channel and I spent a fair amount of time there. Of course the English I learnt at school was British. I love this site because it puts me back in the UK of the 50s and 60s . I still 50 years later feel a bit of a fish out of water here and reading the posts here is quite comforting. Best Regards to all of you!
Gransnet has been helpful, fun, challenging, in so many ways.
I'm isolated because of a complex mix of issues, and coming in is -contact with people at any time of day.
Gransnet is a wonderful platform to be able to air views and have debates and sensible discussions, respecting each other's ideas.
GN is a real daily boost. Meeting everyone here - some names more prominent than others - is a real insight as to who they are, and just reaffirms that we are all humans the world over: all very similar, strong, compassionate, vulnerable, funny, helpful.
GN has helped to create a “sisterhood.” Keep up the great work GN’ers - love reading and learning from you everyday, plus doing an occasional post of my own.
Cheers!

knspol,

I'm like @hetty58.
I'm seen as a maverick for our age group. I don't find fitting in, easy in life.
I have an edgey look to life, growing older disgracefully, love life much better than when I was younger having had a dysfunctional childhood I recreated in adulthood before finally leaving the ex 23 years ago and rebuilding a new happy life.
So my experiences are very diverse, having done the therapy routes, addiction recovery, hidden homeless with 4 children back then and more.
In all this I have learnt so much and happily remarried being widowed 5 years ago. I am a Nana to 4 and though disabled I'm mobile. I use my experiences to help others.
I like reading Gransnet as it helps me connect in with what life is like for others, being at a safe distance.
I don't make threads. I just add in comments as I feel I can.
I am enjoying Gransnet and also learning that there are some very practical and helpful folk who try to make life easier by encouraging others.
I read a few threads at the beginning and thought we all had to be argumentative to add a post, but that isn't true. Gransnet has taught me to be more open minded generally, some people are very forceful and I don't think I will get involved. It seems on the whole a safe kind place.
Lovely post. It's great to read different viewpoints and also to see the responses offering advice and support and sharing similar experiences to whatever the poster may be struggling with, so they can at least see there are others who have faced the same issues.
It can be disappointing to see occasional harsh or judgemental posts, but there is usually a feeling of camaraderie and mutual support.
Gransnet is a valuable source of information, comfort and support. Long may it reign!

Thank you for that post, LRavenscroft, and for all the grans who have been a source of company, comfort and advice to me, especially since the death of my DH last October.
Here here gransnet has helped me in a number of ways. My dd and friends love hearing the funny stories.
Hear hear! I appreciate Gransnet too
I have found gransnet a daily source of comfort, it's always there and also a bit of an eye opener learning the views of other people allowing me to see things from a different angle. It's sometimes put things into perspective for me knowing I'm not the only one struggling with something and also makes me realise there are others with greater problems.
Would love to meet some of the regular posters particularly the ones whose opinions I've learned to value.
What an absolutely lovely post to read. I have never posted on Gransnet before although I have been on here for almost 4 years. I just wanted to say that I have had difficulties with my mental health over the past couple of years caring for 5 family members along with struggling with my own two chronic medical conditions. I have recently received some counselling sessions which I self referred for and have found this to be so helpful. It is always best to talk to someone if you are struggling but often we try to protect others and forget about our own health and well being. The love and support on Gransnet is absolutely heartwarming, please keep up all the good work folks x😊
Gransnetters have been such a great support to me since the loss of my wonderful man so suddenly 3.5yrs ago when ever I have felt myself slipping into that black hole there has been someone to help lift me up again and I am so so grateful,GN should be available on prescription if you ask me.
I don't post on a regular basis but read all the posts most days thanks so much everyone for being such a caring group of ladies & gents.
Gransnet has helped me through problems of all sorts over the years. All sorts : health, technology, household, all sorts. Always I have found gransnetters quick to help and their advice has been invaluable. One kind person sent me advice by message which enabled my daughter to overcome a major problem. Another helped with advice when dh’s driving license hadn’t arrived and because of her help we received it with a letter of apology. I had a terrible scalp problem with an intense irritation for nearly two years and the doctor’s help just didn’t work. Then up popped a Gran who said she had had the same thing for just as long and had solved it with a tea tree shampoo bought on an off chance from a supermarket. I went to Holland and Barret to buy some not expecting it to work but it did - have been so grateful ever since. The list goes on but I love Gransnet and have always offered advice if I have any to give. All might sound petty but not so at the time.
Gransnetters have helped me through bereavement and a dreadful time when a grandchild’s life was at stake I was so grateful to come here when overwhelmed needing advice and support. I’ve met some lovely Grans and ours monthly coffee meets are very lively and interesting. Good advice is often given and hearing others stories is so interesting.
long may it continue.
I haven’t met any Gransnetters in real life 😢 but I have received compassion when posting about certain things which have made me sad.
It's a long way from here to Glasgow but if I'm ever up there !! 🙂
