I’ll be honest - I’d rather pay a further £12.50 and have a meal. Never been a cake and coffee person, but that’s just me …

We paid £8.20 last week for a tea, latte and one current cake. I was gobsmacked. Don’t do it often obviously. Rather go out for a good lunch.

For that price I would expect 2 big cakes eg. rocky road and millionaires shortbread!

As you pay for sitting down in an eatery, you might as well have a cooked meal. Coffee and cakes, often assumed to be a cheap choice, can be relatively expensive. But then I don't much like coffee or cakes!

I'd not pay that for 2 coffees and a tiny tart.

But I do dislike paying for coffee out, no matter the cost.

It was an independent place rather than one of the big boys, which is better, but still. There were no prices up, with a very small selection of ‘bar’ type things like millionaires shortbread, no actual cake, probably stuff that would keep longer as it was in a very quiet area. Good coffee, but I won’t be rushing back. I’m glad it’s not only me.

We go for coffee regularly and usually have a pastry as well. It's always about a tenner. I don't know why we do it. I think it's become a sort of ritual, so that every time we go out there has to be a coffee on the end of it. I don't know when it started, but we probably go about three times a week now.

I bought just 3 nice, quite fancy (but not "patisserie" type) home-baked cakes in a little bakery this week without asking prices.... £11.50!

Not just the U.K., prices are rising worldwide.

I agree that this is very expensive. It pays to shop around. In my area the prices vary and we have found a privately run cafe where we can have 2 americanos and 2 toasted teacakes for £10. I prefer to have coffee out. It’s a nice treat. I only eat a very light snack at lunchtime anyway.

A friend proffered a £20 note to a barman here last week for 2 double G&T’s.
Tye barman was apologetic when he explained the cost was actually going to be £22.

Also met a Grrman couple who had a pint of beer and a G&T in London after the Abba event - had been charged in error £120. He didn’t notice till later, I think he was deliberately scammed.

I actually had a medium Americano (black) in Costa this morning, it was £3.35. Not sure where you had yours, but if it was a chain it sounds like you were overcharged?

I'm sticking with Wetherspoons £1:35 with unlimited refills. Just tried my brand new high street coffee shop. Beautiful. Coffee is £4 a cup. I won't be back.

The trouble is, it is more than paying for the food. We were charged last week £5 each to sit at a window table!

Coffee and a selection of home made cakes £3. in my local heritage centre. Coffee not particularly nice but ok, choice of ordinary or decaf but I meet my friends there so don't mind. Cakes are delicious made by ladies from a local church to support an orphanage in Africa. We have met up in other cafes but never too expensive.

Our local 'real' bakery has closed. His fuel bill had gone up from £250 a week to £1,800. Raw matrial prices have nearly doubled and a good baker can command a wage of over £50,000.

That is why your coffee and cake was so expensive. You were lucky to get them so cheap.

although my local cafe charges, what seem to me, enormous prices they are always packed with young people and families..
and queues waiting.. it's extraodinary
