Did you go to Greenham Common women's peace camp in the 80's? Do you go on demos now?

I was there, holding hands round the base. Nearly 40 years ago now. I was a young woman, hard to believe it really.
Only once as it was a long way from where I lived and my children were too small to take or to leave. They were quite surprised/impressed when they were older.
Have demonstrated on a couple of other more local issues but didnt interfere with other people’s right to go about their business. Won one battle.
Sorry to say but it’s irritating at present as we are being badly affected by groups who are regularly stopping the traffic on the nearby motorway junctions for hours on end. It is total gridlock for miles around. I was recently stuck in traffic for over 2 hours only half a mile from my home. Was going to hospital appt only 3 miles away but couldn’t get there.
I care about many issues, but my demo days are over so just grumble a bit from my comfy chair.

I went on a couple of occasions. I think it did make a difference.

No, but I went on a small demo a few years ago against the third runway at Heathrow.

I went to Embrace the Base on 12th December 1982.
12 coaches went from Edinburgh alone.

It was an empowering, extraordinary experience to see so many people sharing, smiling, singing and always peaceful.

How it was managed without email or mobile phones.
I am in awe.
There were scraps of paper with spider's webs drawn on them, dates, times and instructions.

I have been on many anti-nuclear, anti-war and anti poverty demonstrations and marches but not many lately.

Someone has to let the government know how we feel!

I camped there for a couple of weeks. It was a wonderful place to be. I am in awe of those that put their lives on hold and stayed for longer.

Would I demonstrate now? No. Whatever the cause, it all seems to have been taken over by a) extremists b) commercialism.

Grammareto, I spent a lot of time at Greenham. I lived at Violet Gate (small). Embrace the Base was amazing, with thousands of women from all walks of life coming together to show what can achieved passively together, this during a time of violent action throughout the miner's strike.

Like so many mothers, I feared for my children's lives (I took them with me) as I believed the only way to have some effect on the nuclear madness was to join others and stand up against the bullies, not by fighting, but by passive methods, including singing!

Would I go on a demo now? I'd go back to Greenham if called for, but agree with Peasblossom, any extremism involved would have me seriously questioning whether my personal beliefs could turn a blind eye to the outcome the protest/demo was achieving.

No I didn't but as a young woman I was part of 'Hands around Scotland' against nuclear in Scotland, and took my husband and baby son with me. I now have supported the WASPI women and other 50's woman groups (of which I am one) and regularly get involved with petitions which sometimes actually succeed in making change! I also have taken part in rallies for Independence for Scotland. It's my belief that taking part in these activities does help make change, but only over time. It certainly gets the word out there if nothing else!

Yes, I was there.
Day tripper mind you, but we went down in coach loads - all sorts of people from different walks united by common concern - to circle the base & show solidarity.

Hats off to those of you who camped & made peaceful protest.
I even forgave my ghastly exMiL for many a trifling irritation because she stuck to her guns & stayed at Greenham for several weeks. We were like chalk & cheese, but I did admire her.

What a time we had: Greenham Common & the Miners’s Strike.

I put foodstuffs into collections for Greenham women & miners’s families, now I do so for local food banks. Seemingly we had a decade or two when this fundamental need was not so obvious.

Funnily enough there was a small demo in our area just last week that I, and several others supported. A property developer decided to ride roughshod over the agreed planning agreement by ripping through an ancient hedgerow, with mechanical diggers, and carve out a completely illegal access road onto the development area. Residents, with children, stood their ground against some pretty aggressive behaviour from the developer until the police arrived and they backed off mumbling apologies. The hedgerow has been decimated though.
