Hi all. I have a friend much younger than myself who has a 10 yr old child. When I see her she often tells me how tough it is financially and that there are times when she feeds her child but goes without,of course my heart goes out to her so I invite them both to eat at my place for either lunch or dinner. She has also borrowed money. The other day I was at her place and saw she bought 2 bottles of 1 litre whiskey. $100 Australian. I mentioned to her that "I'm confused that you say you cant buy food or pay bills ,but buy alcohol." She wasn't happy and felt I was judging her. Should I have said nothing.???

SueH49, compare the population volume between Australia and UK.
Even when I was in Oz in 1990, a long time ago, there appeared to be a lot of " drinkers " back then. Hot sunny weather, a laid-back life and hard-partying, something I didn't see when I was there in 1982 so things HAVE changed over the years. This was in Sydney.

Coded messages? Eh? confused

M54. Yep, I’ve certainly noticed it.

Not just me then. Next time it happens I’ll post a wink on the thread it happens on

Google tells me that 100 Australian dollars is about £55. So, quite expensive.
Do alcoholics normally buy expensive drink? Or go for getting the most for their money?
Possibly the woman just has her priorities wrong.
I agree with those saying to continue being a friend, and inviting her and her child for a meal if you like to do that, but cut back on giving her money.

FarNorth Sun 07-Apr-19 10:33:03

Btw, does she pay back the money she borrows?

Carolina55 Sun 07-Apr-19 10:34:42

I do the cryptic crossword in the daily mail (occasionally finish it as well!) but these clues have gone right over my head! Can someone educate me please?

maryeliza54 Sun 07-Apr-19 10:36:33

PM me if you really want to know - I can’t do an open post

Elegran Sun 07-Apr-19 10:37:03

If it is something you don't like, MaryEliza, that you are posting coded messages about, why not let GN know?

Chewbacca Sun 07-Apr-19 10:39:19

Quiet Elegran. A bit of mischief making going on I think. Wondering why. hmm

maryeliza54 Sun 07-Apr-19 10:39:35

I’m amused by it Elegran . It was quite clever to start with but it’s getting a bit obvious now. However, it doesn’t harm the OP so it’s not again guidelines.

Chewbacca Sun 07-Apr-19 10:41:12

Then what's the point of stirring it up Maryeliza? It doesn't make any sense.

maryeliza54 Sun 07-Apr-19 10:44:25

Why shouldn’t I mention something I’ve noticed and ask if anyone else has noticed it? I’m not naming any names am I? ( they know who they are) . Just a bit of fun. Get off your high horses

Gonegirl Sun 07-Apr-19 10:46:11

Yes there is Maryeliza and it's silly. (little things...)

Gonegirl Sun 07-Apr-19 10:47:33

It's this "are you new? Welcome etc". Not really welcoming at all. Two faced actually.

maryeliza54 Sun 07-Apr-19 10:48:43

The little things comment refers to both sides of the equation methink. Anyway my work on this thread is done - let’s see what the day might bring?

Gonegirl Sun 07-Apr-19 10:49:12

Getting back to the OP, I might have innocently asked if she liked whisky.

Chewbacca Sun 07-Apr-19 10:49:27

sigh

maryeliza54 Sun 07-Apr-19 10:50:41

Sorry Gone I misread your post - you’re agreeing with me but have now outed my suspicions. I’m off as hell will rain down now

Gonegirl Sun 07-Apr-19 10:52:19

There are "little things" and little" things. The innocent totally harmless little things, quite out in the open, inviting others to join in, and then there's the sly digs.

Different in my opinion if not in yours.

Gonegirl Sun 07-Apr-19 10:53:14

Sorry from me too. grin I thought you were getting at me for a thread I started yesterday (about discussion of the day)

Gonegirl Sun 07-Apr-19 10:53:38

That was definitely a "little thing".

Gonegirl Sun 07-Apr-19 10:54:36

I'll shut up and start preparing the dinner.

Apologies to OP.

Willow10 Sun 07-Apr-19 11:23:39

I must be so dim - I haven't got a clue what's going on! confused

Annaram1 Sun 07-Apr-19 11:25:40

Did your friend actually say you are judging her? You had to say something, because the money would be much better spent on her child and food.
You are a friend and you are older, and therefore it was your duty to point out that the alcohol was a waste of money. If it was bought as a present for somebody else, it was a very expensive present, and she would have said it was not for her.
You are a good friend and should keep asking her and her child to dinner, if you can afford it, but don't give her any more money as it is probably being spent on drink. She is a boozer, I'm afraid.
