Hi all. I have a friend much younger than myself who has a 10 yr old child. When I see her she often tells me how tough it is financially and that there are times when she feeds her child but goes without,of course my heart goes out to her so I invite them both to eat at my place for either lunch or dinner. She has also borrowed money. The other day I was at her place and saw she bought 2 bottles of 1 litre whiskey. $100 Australian. I mentioned to her that "I'm confused that you say you cant buy food or pay bills ,but buy alcohol." She wasn't happy and felt I was judging her. Should I have said nothing.???

Barmeyoldbat The other buttons lead to useful pages too. Worth exploring.

There are many posts asking how to do something, or what the acronyms mean. I do think that GN should have an automatic reply to new members just joining, telling them how to use the site and which button does what.

Coded messages? What fun smile

Are we a conduit for MI6, passing things to the Russians?

Is there a latter day Philby tuning in to GN for information on a drop box?

Or it it a sort of Da Vinci code where untold wealth is waiting if only we could decipher the codes?

Or maybe a gentle, coded message what Jesus loves us?

Oooh, isn't life exciting here grin

Thanks Elegran, often wondered!

The list of acronyms is accessed by a button labelled "acronyms" up there near the top of the page, where it says

Oh, and reporting her to Social Services and the school? Poor woman - there is no evidence at all that her child is at risk.

Madmeg Sun 07-Apr-19 22:47:28

What on earth is all this stuff about codes and all the related sarcasm? I abandoned Mumsnet because of this when I got slated for asking a genuine question as if I were guilty of something dreadful. I haven't seen this kind of stuff on here before.

And where is this list of acronyms please - I can't see it.

As for the OP, I don't think a one-off discovery of rash spending on something perceived as unwise should be treated as anything other than a one-off discovery of spending on something perceived as unwise. Nobody should be drawing conclusions or changing their behaviour as a result.

Just carry on being a friend, perhaps take care about lending money, and see how things go.

Meg

Now everyone is behaving.... I knew this would happen.... I am ashamed of all.... Will come back children when you are in a better mood and can behave......

I'm out with you, Gonegirl. It's worse than being back at school.

Barmeyoldbat Sun 07-Apr-19 18:53:28

Now everyone is behaving, maybe, just maybe they were a present, won in a raffle etc. Has she ever appeared the worse for drake. I had a friend who drank and we knew when she had been drinking. May give her the benefit of the doubt and offer help in other ways other than lending money.

Gonegirl Sun 07-Apr-19 18:52:42

Delete what you like Natasha. I don't give a stuff.

Gonegirl Sun 07-Apr-19 18:51:51

God. It's dangerous to be light hearted on Gransnet isn't it.

Back to your threads about death and misery. Bye.

Gonegirl Sun 07-Apr-19 18:50:02

Oh I didnt mean to be nasty to you Mamacaz. I just think the whole lot of it is best laughed at. I'm sorry if I've upset anybody. I realise that not everyone appreciates my daft sense of humour. I'll shut up.

NittWitt Sun 07-Apr-19 18:18:59

Maybe friend happened to be flush this month & bought the whisky.
Other months she's not so flush.
(I'm only guessing, the same as everyone else, but it's possible.)

Annaram1 Sun 07-Apr-19 18:12:39

Well maryliza and her ilk!!¬ I knew this would happen. I have never seen such a bad natured ill tempered and downright nasty lot of posts, and I am ashamed of all those who left the thread to be aggressive and rude.

Maggiemaybe Sun 07-Apr-19 18:10:35

Right, back on track.....

Greeneyes, I don't think your friend has a drink problem. She wouldn't be buying half-decent whiskey if she had, she'd be buying much cheaper stuff, and hiding it away, not leaving it out there for you to see. If she'd bought the bottles as presents, she'd have surely said so when you commented.

I think you've been very kind to this friend, but she seems to be exaggerating her poverty. I wouldn't be lending her any more money.

Hi all,

There's a lot of comments here that are close to crossing a line and if the thread doesn't get back on track we will have no choice but to delete it.

Just a reminder also that, if you have any concerns, please email us at [email protected] rather than posting them on the thread. smile

kittylester Sun 07-Apr-19 17:47:42

gonegirl, there are far worse people who might respond - as this thread illustrates!

Barmeyoldbat Sun 07-Apr-19 17:46:33

Just come onto GN after a lovely day out and as I don't understand what the hell this spat is about I am going. Will come back children when you are in a better mood and can behave.

MamaCaz Sun 07-Apr-19 17:37:19

Gonegirl
No! Ignore the lot of it!

Downright nasty and uncalled for!

Gonegirl Sun 07-Apr-19 17:35:01

Well, we did sort the problem out for her didn't we? smile

NanTheWiser Sun 07-Apr-19 17:30:57

I wonder wher OPs gone.....?

Gonegirl Sun 07-Apr-19 17:17:15

No! Ignore the lot of it!

MamaCaz Sun 07-Apr-19 17:16:34

Please ignore the typos.

Gonegirl Sun 07-Apr-19 17:16:08

Oh! Only read my posts! (Stamps foot)

Gonegirl Sun 07-Apr-19 17:15:19

And if anja or bluebell comes on too, run for the hills! grin

MamaCaz Sun 07-Apr-19 17:15:03

I have sometimes welcomed newbies - though not often on this particular forum, because unlike many other forums, GN does not show how many posts a person has made next to their name - and I can honestly say that my welcome has never been anything other than a genuine welcome to someone who has just joined the group. No hidden meaning. And I think it is fair to say that this is true of most people who post a welcome to a newbie.
I actualely feel quite offended by this sudden attack on about what is a common and usually a genuinely friendly practice!
