Oops, sorry, I digressed from the OP there.

MissA I've been going to the home and doing this for, I think, eleven years now and I do still get a bit choked and tearful occasionally. Sometimes when they hear a familiar hymn it's almost like a light comes on behind people's eyes and all of a sudden they're back in this world for a short time.

One of my favourite residents was the hundred year old son of a farmer who, would relate tales about his beloved late father in a wonderful west country accent. His dad used to take him to church and it was a memory he treasured, in fact the love that elderly gentleman had for his dad always left me in awe of the relationship they must have had.

‘In Christ Alone’ is my favourite at the moment, although I also love ‘Crown him with many crowns’. I absolutely detest ‘Abide with me’

The church used to come to the home where I worked.
It was absolutely lovely to see people singing along.
Made me quite tearful.

When I was a very small child and we sang this at Sunday School I could never understand why a green hill needed a city wall around it.

Most of the music I listen to consists of hymns and worship songs and I am hard pressed to name a single favourite, but I have asked that the following are played at my funeral:

For many years I have been taking a small group into a local care home once a month and we sing four traditional hymns with the residents. This particular home (not the one I'm Chaplain to) has a high number of residents with dementia and it never ceases to move me when I observe them singing along and remembering all the words. The effects of singing the hymns sometimes lingers for a while and they reminisce about their school days, or singing in the church choir. It's quite humbling.
