The flowers from guests' bouquets and items from a 'flower arranging course' were reworked after the event by a firm that then passes them on to charity'.

I don't know what you think but having read details of the 'no expense spared' extravaganza, isn't this just a modern day version of 'crumbs from the rich man's table?'

I do think it's a good idea but I can't make up my mind about her motives. Showing off her vast wealth in the company of celebs like the Clooneys is not going to endear her to hard-up folk who normally turn out to support the Royals. Has nobody warned her it could all come crashing down?

hmm

Cruel? You don't know the meaning of the word.
Let me enlighten you.

* Ngaio1 *. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU. Arecyou really so utterly nasty in real life. I’m ashamed to belong to this community with people like you here. Shame on you! I just hope you’re not passing on your prejudices to your grandchildren !

My daughter spent a very brief time in the public eye, being followed (and intimidated) by the paparazzi and having people who had never met her writing about her on forums, all based on an untrue negative media image. She followed our advice not to respond in any way and maintained a dignified silence throughout the ordeal and since.

She became suicidal.

Who among us hasn't been extravagant or over indulgent at some time - it appears that gransnetters are parsimonious, perfect human beings

Carolpaint Sat 23-Feb-19 11:02:43

Yes I am ashamed of the views and curmudgeonly outpouring of this community. The women who sat knitting by the guillotne flashes through my head. Perhaps she needs to be buoyed by the company of her own. Successful wealthy women all, not on the coat tails of a man.
So enjoy Megan continue to work and raise several jolly proactive children.

Lily65 Sat 23-Feb-19 11:08:00

I don't have it in for M, how could I? I don't know her and take no more than a passing interest.

I just find the lavish baby shower thing out of step with my own values and particularly mis timed when some people have so little.

Telly Sat 23-Feb-19 11:08:16

The level of animosity here is quite puzzling. The RF have had hundreds of years to cover up their extravagance. Megan will get the hang of it.

Oldwoman70 Sat 23-Feb-19 11:24:10

Poor Meghan - nothing she does will please some people. Can you imagine what it will be like when she has the child - I used the spying equipment which the government is using on all of us and have heard this:

Where to have the child - private hospital? No, would be accused of flaunting wealth. NHS hospital? No, taking facilities away from someone poorer. Home birth? No, would need a doctor or midwife in attendance who could be looking after someone else. Mum stay and deliver the baby? No, British tax-payer will have to pay for her bed and board. Perhaps Kate could step in? No, according to the press they hate each other. Looks like she will be delivering the child herself

When the baby is born there will be no announcing it's sex. It must be allowed to live as gender neutral until old enough to decide for itself what sex it wants to be

It's name must reflect the fact that UK is multi-cultural but on no account must a traditional British name be used as this will be classed as celebrating imperialism.

Run Meghan Run!!

Lily65 Sat 23-Feb-19 11:30:02

I believe they are considering Wayne or Janiqu'a as possible names.

sarahellenwhitney Sat 23-Feb-19 11:31:11

Call me out of touch, regardless of who paid for this or who paid for that, would it not have been in the interest of both mother and unborn child that the baby shower took place in the UK?. Thus avoiding long haul even if mum to be had plenty of 'leg room' and other in flight luxuries that most of us can only dream of?

ReadyMeals Sat 23-Feb-19 11:33:24

Well I find it even more creepy and patronising when wealthy people act as if they're not, in order to spare poorer people's feelings. Don't forget every time a rich person splashes their money on fripperies, several hard working people receive the benefit as the money filters down. Though it might have been better if she'd had this extravaganza in the UK so we could benefit.

Bridgeit Sat 23-Feb-19 11:37:12

Seems like the Clooneys also like to do some good in the world because of or despite their wealth.
Everyone & everything is relative, their will always be an unjust scale of wealth distribution, it’s all relative, whilst we Grannies pontificate on our computers in our warm homes with food on our tables, clothes on our backs , poverty , starvation etc is within in a stones throw of each & everyone of us. Many of us probably do our bit to help, but we don’t give up all we have do we ? -Let he who is without sin cast the first stone - is not a bad thought to bear in mind!!

grannyactivist Sat 23-Feb-19 11:39:14

My daughter-in-law had a baby shower that was thrown for her by her friends and hosted by her mum. She didn't ask for it, but was delighted to get together with people who cared for her and were excited about the baby on the way. It was such an unremarkable event that the newspapers didn't even send a reporter to cover the 'story'. hmm

Baggs Sat 23-Feb-19 11:42:42

why not stage it in the Cotswolds where the Clooney's have a vast mansion?

There's an article in the paper today about how people who live in the Cotswolds are getting a bit sick of rich people roaring around in their showoffy cars and flaunting their wealth in ither ways.

Baggs Sat 23-Feb-19 11:45:12

I'm puzzled by this. My invitation must have got lost in the post.

maggiemaybe, ????

Bridgeit Sat 23-Feb-19 11:46:22

Doesn’t everyone living in the Cotswolds own showy off cars ? They must have if they can afford to live in the Cotswolds or so popular myths say !??

Oldwoman70 Sat 23-Feb-19 11:48:14

"I'm puzzled by this. My invitation must have got lost in the post."

I had to tell Amal I couldn't make it - I was supervising the changing of the bed linen that day - you have to keep an eye on the lower classes don't you know grin

Urmstongran Sat 23-Feb-19 11:48:38

I care a bit because:

A. The photo op with the little boy with cancer posing with some flowers broke my heart. He had a weak smile as though he wasn’t fully aware what this circus was all about.

- crumbs from Marie Antoinette’s table indeed.

and

B. Whatta carbon footprint!

- oh well, don’t suppose the RF will be banging on aboutgreen issues for a while then. It’s us you see, not them, stupid!

Bridgeit Sat 23-Feb-19 11:50:39

By the way I don’t even get how some clothes can cost what they do, but there again the demand(!) feeds someone’s industry (everyone’s on a scale )

Jaycee5 Sat 23-Feb-19 11:53:09

Oldwoman70 That is exactly it. People are relishing their nastiness.
You would think that people would get more mellow and understanding as they get older but this thread is horrendous and is the kind of thing that makes it difficult to challenge ageism when you see it elsewhere. If they are reminded that Diana received the same and then was suddenly beatified when she died (as has happened on other threads) you get answers like 'she is no Diana as if that is a fault'. It is really shameful.

GabriellaG54 Bit selective with your definition there. Yes I do know the definition of cruelty. I also know the definition of online bullying if you would prefer that.

Nowadays people know the impact of online abuse.

Bridgeit Sat 23-Feb-19 11:54:34

Prince Charles never stops ‘ banging ‘ on about it, & good for him , like him or not he does do practical stuff it just doesn’t make good tabloid reading.
You don’t often read/ hear about the Prince’s trust etc

Houndi Sat 23-Feb-19 11:56:12

I have no interest cannot understand why people cate.It like tje silly sods who stand outside in the rain to see them
Or the deluge of presents when she gives birth

pinkquartz Sat 23-Feb-19 11:56:37

Why did it have to be a PR stunt? I don't think it is ok to shove such needless wealth in our faces when many in this country are really struggling.
The flowers donation was sick because I bet those cancer patients could have done with help in paying medical bills or some fun for themselves. Having a rich person't leftovers is tasteless.

willa45 Sat 23-Feb-19 11:57:17

MM gets far more attention (and a hefty dose of vitriol) on this forum than she ever got in the US.

We don't see a lot of press about MM here in the US, much less about a lavish baby shower presumably fit for royalty. A lovely custom by the way, not just here in the US but in many places around the world.

What better way to welcome a new baby into the world, than by bearing gifts and celebrating its upcoming arrival?
