Shame on you Corbyn!

I think it is the fact he denied saying it that is the problem. Why deny it when it was obvious to everyone. He later lost his temper with a journalist and stated he had said it under his breath!

Perhaps he forgot he said it, he couldn’t remember if he was involved in a wreath laying ceremony he attended !

Apparently when the public was asked what it thought ,most people agreed he said stupid woman , but didn’t think it was sexist.If a male MP had pretended to be in pantomime JC would probably have called him a stupid man, but it’s the denial that is so objectionable. Sorry if I’m just repeating what’s already been said

My friend who lip reads and was raised by deaf parents who mouthed words says he said PEOPLE ,not woman .Looking at the video I would agree as his lips certainly touched twice when he pronounced the second word..But hey the Corbyn bashers will still say its woman ..even if the microphone had picked it up!

Suppose the May bashers would say that .paddyanne, but it was woman .

Whatever TM is she is not stupid , she is very clever and tough, she is facing down the whole House of Commons, they are fighting like ferrets in a sack. I happen to disagree with her but I have to admire her tenacity sticking to what she believes in, she is head and shoulders above ineffectual JC. Even if she looses the Brexit vote she will plough on, if we have a second vote the "deal" will still be there.

The Conservative Party has restored the whip to a man who sent hundreds of sex texts, using violent and highly offensive language. Corbyn mutters "stupid women/people" and you'd think he'd committed murder. How many people can honestly say they've never muttered similar words to themselves about a man or a woman? Some of the behaviour in the House of Commons is, I think, a good deal more unpleasant.

Eloethan, he lied, and not the first time, the man lies.

It's a reflection of the total mess in the HoC that those two men were restored the whip because they'd vote the "right" way to support TMay.

My objection to what Corbyn said, is that a man who claims not to be a misogynist calls the PM a stupid woman. Then he lies about it. If he'd immediately said - sorry I was so cross about the mess the country is in as a result of her leadership of this government, I was muttering under my breath. I still believe the government to be stupid, I apologise if my use of the word woman offended women.

For those who say she is a woman and she is stupid, read POGs post above, it spells out why the use of that phrase in the HoC isn't acceptable.

So a politician lied! Hold the front page! Oh, they did. I'm still not persuaded that the disputed word was 'woman', but even if it was, all he was saying was what a great many of us, including on the Government benches, agreed with.

Do you really think saying "stupid woman" or "stupid man" indicates sexism? I ask again, how many people would mutter "stupid person" under their breath?

If he said stupid Tories, I agree with him - the mess they've made of this country.

If it is mysoginistic to say "stupid woman" is it misandric to say "stupid man"? And if not why not?

Eloethan,yes given he was debating with a woman in Parliament. We can read or hear something and think ‘stupid man or stupid woman ‘ , but Corbyn used it to belittle a woman and then scuttled away, was called back and lied to the house.

It isn't about equal rights or special treatment imo. It's linked to the fact that women in the HoC ( and in the wider world) are much more likely to be demeaned because of their gender, than men are. I don't want to make the mountain out of the mouse hole here. I fully accept there are more very important issues at steak - Brexit for one and the destruction of our public services for another. The fact that a man who claims to understand the wider issues relating to oppression, racism, sexism etc etc can make the comment, not fess up etc sadly confirms my difficulties with JC.

"Calm down dear" is very different from "stupid woman". It is very unlikely that he would have addressed another man in such terms. Exception was taken because it was a phrase specifically seen as belittling of women generally. A woman or a man could, in my opinion, mutter the words "stupid man" or "stupid woman" without the intention of belittling either sex.

Not in a debate and not in Parliament

And let's be clear about something. Anything said in Parliament is addressed to the Speaker, and if the Speaker didn't hear it, it wasn't said. The speaker said he didn't hear it (which he couldn't have anyway) therefore Corbyn cannot say he said it without calling the Speaker either a liar or incompetent. It's called parliamentary procedure. It may be stupid, it may archaic but it's how it works. It is not the same as someone having an everyday conversation. And most of the people I know who lip read have said they thought it was "people" which would be appropriate given the shower in power.
