Sorry, Lynne but I'm not sure I could have explained my thoughts any clearer. I'm talking about the trend where people omit words from the end of a sentence or phrase. For example they will refer to their child as their "little", instead of their "little boy".
Perhaps you have never come across this. I have, many many times.

Doesn't the fact that you can fill in the blanks of the examples you cite show that the meaning is clear?

You’re quite right Oakleaf - I hadn’t considered those! But even so, many of them still make grammatical sense in their abbreviated form - it’s the nonsensical ones that bug me ?

The first one on Oakleaf's list dates back to at least the 1940s and, I think, considerably earlier, so the habit of abreviation is something that is probably as old as language. If you know what you are saying and so does your listener, you abreviate.

Knowing the ends of the phrases without saying them means you belong to a particular club its just a form of shorthand.

"Enjoy!" drives me bonkers... It's usually in a restaurant and feels like a command!
