What is your cup (of life)?

Talking to friends yesterday and the usual problems were doing the rounds. Something had quite upset me but I was trying to make the best of it. Friend gave me a hug and said "your cup always seems to be half full, never half empty". I suppose I knew what she meant I do try to make the best of things otherwise I sometimes wouldn't cope. Obviously in life's big tragedies no one cares about cups, but in the day to day things in life what would your cup be- half full or half empty?

At a company I once worked at I was asked by the boss if I was on drugs because I was always ? ?

BBbevan Mon 19-Nov-18 18:10:28

Definitely half full. I have learned ,from experience, not to worry. Thinks are, mostly, never as bad as my imagination could make them. I have a very happy marriage ( 53yrs) and great children, and grandchildren . Also super SiL and DiL.

Three quarters full with a dash of realism. My problems are my problems and I deal with them. Nothing was ever made better by moaning so I put on a happy face and always try to have a positive outlook. Hey I ain't dead yet so there's always hope.

Half empty mostly; I worry about just about everything and if there isn’t anything I’ll invent it! DH is exactly opposite - nothing ever seems to phase him.

KatyK Mon 19-Nov-18 19:02:03

You always come across as the very opposite of superficial and insensitive kitty smile

grannyqueenie Mon 19-Nov-18 19:15:01

I describe myself as an optimist but a realistic one, so I’m not sure where that puts me in the cup scenario. - half full (ish)? I do worry about some things but tend not to actively “fret” for too long. Maybe that makes me shallow and insensitive like Kitty...who isn’t!

I think you are born optimistic or pessimistic, or develop a certain way of thinking from early childhood experiences. I would love to be a glass half full person, and don't present I think, as a misery guts, but always over think situations looking for problems. I need to have a coping mechanism if things go wrong.

MissAdventure Mon 19-Nov-18 20:46:23

I don't necessarily see pessimism as a bad trait.
I don't drag people down with constant moaning (i hope!)
I just grimly expect the worst, and I have to say, I'm not often disappointed!smile

M0nica Mon 19-Nov-18 21:55:59

I always hope for the best but plan for the worst.

MissAdventure Mon 19-Nov-18 21:58:23

In a way, pessimism is rather liberating.
I don't have to worry, "what if?", I just plan for "when".

Jane10 Mon 19-Nov-18 22:28:27

I agree. If you always fear the worst and it doesn't happen that's great. If it does happen, well then it was only what you expected!

pensionpat Mon 19-Nov-18 22:52:14

I am optimistic. If I were a pessimist the same things would have happened to me, but I’ve been happy until they did.

Lilypops Mon 19-Nov-18 23:19:42

Anyone know what happened to Wobblybits, I suddenly realised he /she wasn't on GN anymore ?

Jane10 Tue 20-Nov-18 06:58:23

The last I heard he was going to have another hip replacement. He was very helpful and supportive when I had to have my first knee replacement. He's had several names though over the years. Maybe he's still lurking? I hope so.

wobblybits sense of humour upset some people as they saw it as being Un pc. I miss him.

tiggers Tue 20-Nov-18 10:18:26

my beloved Dad (who would be celebrating his 100th birthday today!) used to say of me …….."you would laugh if your backside was on fire!"

That'll be half full for me then.

Ramblingrose22 Tue 20-Nov-18 10:23:27

I am a glass half empty/pessimistic person who wishes I were the opposite.

This could be because of bad things that have happened in the past that I would be able to deal with better now that I'm older. However where the issue is something I have no control over the pessimism remains......

I've been trying to persuade myself to become an optimist because I imagine that optimists don't get as stressed as I do and after all - we've both got the same chance of being right/wrong about the future.

Do the glass half fulls here see themselves as getting less stressed than others and dealing with it better?

sarahellenwhitney Tue 20-Nov-18 10:24:07

Definatly a half empty having been married to a half full.
Now a matter of living with it. I can't see myself ever changing.

GabriellaG Tue 20-Nov-18 10:25:36

My cup runneth over: with love, good health, contentment, kindness, stability, no worries, family and friends...not forgetting valued aquaintances here on GN. flowerssmile

kittylester Tue 20-Nov-18 10:30:02

That will make you an optimist then gabriella! grin

Alima Tue 20-Nov-18 10:51:55

That is a very long motto you have got there M0nica. By the time that has been rattled out you would be under the proverbial bus. (At the moment my cup runneth over with spells for pestulance so that a certain ars..le loses bits). Definitely not a Pollyanna.

Davidhs Tue 20-Nov-18 10:53:19

Always half full, the eternal optimist
Good health, good wife, good family I have been very fortunate.

Magicmaggie Tue 20-Nov-18 10:59:15

I’m usually an optimist, but after this year, the worst one
for years, I’ve really tried to look forward to the future, and say “this too will pass”.
Having said that, when I read some of the awful problems
fellow gransnetters have encountered I think of the saying
“ there’s always someone worse off then yourself”.
Friends, retail therapy, ? and wine have all helped to get me through.

Purplepoppies Tue 20-Nov-18 11:00:23

To the outside world I'm fine and dandy......
Paddling like mad to stay afloat in my head though.
I'm realistic I think. But experiences can definitely tinge the rosy hue.
