Pettiness of Sainsburys

You are certainly bot being petty or silly in my opinion,I would have insisted on seeing a manager reguardless how long the queues where,I dont have my money off vouchers to hand at the minute but check if it mentions alcohol on your voucher,email CS and tell them what happened Sainsburys cannot afford to loose good customers I'm sure.

Totally unreasonable in my opinion, ring the store and ask to speak to the duty manager. They should refund you the voucher value as a goodwill gesture.

nonnie I have spoken to my eldest son who is a late evening manager at Sainsburys and he says he would have let you use the voucher no problem.

Voucher says 'excludes spirits, liqueurs (all alcohol in Scotland) I'm in England.

Don't they have to display spirits in a spirit aisle?

Think I will go to Waitrose or Morrisons in future, both much nicer experiences and I have a choice!

This is the most stupid thing I have heard of for a long time. A liqueur is classed as a chocolate and is in the chocolate/sweets aisle. That is Jobsworth at his very best.

They are being unreasonable - I would go to the store and demand the £9 in money (then go and spend the money in another supermarket)

ps they only sent you a voucher because you have shopped and spent your money in Sainsbury's on previous occasions.

There are items that shops are forbidden from offering promotions on. It has nothing to do with the individual chain/branch/manager/staff.

And some areas/councils have further restrictions on how alcohol can be promoted and sold on top of any national rules which all branches in that area also have to follow

Even if that’s the case notanan there should be adequate signage or a clear message on the voucher. In your shoes I would have thought I was buying sweets not alcohol. Please do contact the store manager (I’d phone and not leave it) and/or central customer services via email. Let us know the outcome, this issues could impact us all at some point.

How silly. I had a £12 off voucher from them which I used in an online shop. It did say that it couldn't be used for the "buy 6 bottles of wine, get 25% off" promotion, but it was refused when I ordered one of the bottles included in the promotion, even though I didn't, of course, get the discount. It's easy enough to change an item for something else when you're sitting at your computer at home, but as you say, not so convenient when you're at the till with a queue behind you.

Definitely follow it up, via the email address or telephone number on their website. It's a system error, and the store manager might have no say in the matter, but someone somewhere has made a mistake.

If you spent between £60 and £63.50 then someone is being petty-minded and you could have pointed out to them that the chocolates should therefore be on the alcohol aisle if they are included as alcohol.

However, if you spent £63.50 or more then there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to refuse to take the voucher, Baileys chocolates or no Baileys chocolates.

Unless, as notanan2 says, it's a ruling they have to stick to. Either way I think they'll give you the £9 credit.

You can not buy these sweets before 10 am in Scotland with the draconian drink law. You cannot even buy non alcoholic beer .

Jalima I only spent just over the £60 unfortunately.

I have facebooked and tweeted them but no response. Clearly they don't think their customer deserves a response. I plan to go over there again sometime next week and will call in with the receipt and the voucher and see what the Manager says. For all they know I could be a really poor pensioner and that £9 could be important. For me it is a point of principle and I have no intention of just letting it go.

So, do they sell liqueur chocolates to minors?

If the vouchers exclude liqueurs, then that means Bailey's chocs too.

What if you had purchased a xmas cake/pudding or mince pies that states contains brandy etc would this ban have applied to them?

Nonnie. How frustrating for you. If you have no joy with the store manager. Try sending a complaint into their head office.
