I’ve put mine on this morning. Very chilly here. It’s officially winter.☹️

I think I read recently that here in NE Scotland is officially the coldest part of the country. Our heating is always on, but only kicks in when temp drops below 22deg (bedrooms set lower). The hall floor has been warm in the mornings recently, indicating that the overnight temp dropped. The house is well insulated, so that even in the winter, the sun shining in brings the living area up to 24deg, and it stays at that or 23 until almost midnight.

No Mains gas here either , must go out and gather sticks from the hedges ! Actually we did have an eccentric in the village who did just that , she could be seen often with a branches hanging off the bicycle , she never turned down a cup of tea by many kind neighbours wink

No mains gas here either. Oil for heating and bottled gas for cooking. We have the log burner alight at the moment as it is quite cold here

Got new boiler with remote control! HE hasn't found it!

Succumbed this evening and turned thermostat to 16. It came on instantly. Bliss.
What’s this nonsense about it being autumn until December 21st? A season depends on natural changes according to the weather, so spring can be early, winter can be long etc. Winter starts when it’s cold, summer after the last frosts. There were seasons long before there were calendars.

I live on my own so can do what I want! I refuse to wear coats or carry hot water bottles around in the house so I put the heating on when ever I feel chilly.

At the moment it is set at 18 degrees from 7am to 10pm and rarely comes on but I over ride the controls when I am sat down and my nose is cold! I do not have a fire and my bungalow is built on damp ground that used to be a moss - houses were not allowed due to the soft land. I have 5 ft of space under my bungalow which floods during heavy rain so I am conscious of not allowing damp to get hold. During my first winter here I had awful condensation on the Windows over night and black mould in all my wardrobes. After a new boiler was fitted and extra radiators installed, I am now mould free and toasty warm - and pay lower energy bills!

Yup...and Aga...and probably open fire later too. It’s 7 degrees here today in the Northern Isles, but possibly rising to 12. Yay!!

Very sensible. It’s really not wise to let your home become too cold - not good for your health.

Not needed the heating on yet as the house is well insulated and holds the heat but definitely need the electric blanket. Just bought a new one, does just about everything so bed is toasty warm to get into. We do have mains gas and have a fairly new gas fire in the front room so will probably use that first. Can't be cold, not looking forward to winter.

No not yet. We have a solid fuel boiler which serves the central heating (no gas in this village) so no auto on & off, the heating only comes on when we fire up the boiler. We don't usually start using the heating till about early December. The house is well insulated and if the days are sunny it holds the heat well, if the evenings are chilly I put a cardigan on. The bathroom has an electric towel radiator and we have the luxury of electric blankets too. I quite look forward to lighting the boiler (but not carrying hods of coal!) it looks so cosy blazing away on a cold day and sometimes we add applewood and pine logs from the garden which smell lovely.

It’s not yet Winter, crystaltipps, we are in Autumn ? .... and.... yes, I too have a burst of heat morning and night.

No mains gas here either! We are all electric but have a small woodburner as well. We have air to air heat pumps which are very economical and our heating costs have plummetted since our relative downsize. No radiators are also a distinct advantage as is the possibility of using it in reverse for air con which was wonderful this summer.
What a daft idea someone had that everyone in civilized areas has gas!?!? Or would even want it! hmm

Still managing without if I can get to November I ll be well pleased The weather for this week should be warm again ?jump up and down with glee

There almost seems to be a trend in this thread of people trying to out do each other over how long they can last before the heating comes on.

I just have the heating on thermostat all year. If it is cold, the heating just clocks on, even in August - and we have had some really cold August days in previous years.

Our heating bills are around the national average, which considering the size of the house, its age and that we cannot have double glazing because it is Listed means we manage our heating sensibly and economically.

No chilly evenings, when we shiver because we have determined a specific date for turning the heating on and although snow is on the ground we will not turn it on before that date.

Synonymous Tue 09-Oct-18 21:55:27

I don't think that anyone is trying to outdo anybody in any way MOnica people are probably just trying to work within their budgets. Prices certainly only head in one direction! hmm
