Have you got your heating on yet?

No but it hardly ever goes on, maybe half a dozen times a year at most. My house is very well insulated and is more in need of air con than heating. That's my project for next year.

Yes, we've had ours on and off as necessary. I do sometimes give it a nudge in the morning, as I do like a warm radiator for the towels. DH is a colder bod than me, so is often seen peering at the thermostat ?

Ours is on all year, but controlled by thermostat so it only comes on when temp drops below 21 degrees, whether that is June or January! House is well insulated, but have noticed the bathroom radiator has been on a couple of mornings lately. Do like warm dry towels!

We looked at last years electricity bill and decided that this year we would buy a fire for the lounge and turn off the central heating for good. Neither of us like heated bedrooms and its pointless heating the hall, so we've bought a fancy looking electric thing with a pretend logburner. We switched it on to test it and it put out loads of heat, so hope we have made the right decision. Time will tell!

I saw on the weather forecast that today will be 22 in the South ans 12 in the northern half of Scotland!! amazing to think it's all in one (relatively small) island.

Miepl although like you, I don't like an over heated bedroom, don't you think you will miss a bit of heat in the mornings before you get out of bed? What about the bathroom?

Yes ours has been on 2 hours in the morning and 2 in the evening. Supposed to be nice today, hope to sit out in the garden perhaps.

We've had ours on for an hour in the evenings as DH doesn't like a cold bedroom. Our bedrooms face North East so don't benefit from the evening sun.

Lit the log burner the other evening, but not had central heating on yet.

Ours comes on automatically when the temperature drops below a certain level, so it has come on some mornings recently when the temperature has dropped.
I can't imagine only having a fire in one room and the rest of the house cold, but maybe that's just me as I can't stand being cold. I would also worry about the rest of the house getting damp and musty and the resulting cost of putting that right. ?

A few evenings and a little while some mornings when I’ve felt cold. Turn the thermostat up as needed. Guess we’re lucky as it’s not too much of a worry.

Miepl I ve never had central heating I have a big old ( quite cold) Victorian house and I could never warrant the price of central heating so it’s been gas fires in the two main rooms downstairs and nothing else but I ve never been used to heating in the bedroom, so it’s no big deal for me I get out of bed into the hot shower which gives me enough heat to get dressed by then downstairs and switch on the gas fire, instant heat and really that does me
My daughter has central heating but never has it above 16 and hasn’t switched it on yet They were all brought up without any heating so perhaps are more adaptable we used to scrape the ice off the bedroom windows we don’t do that now
Mableleaf my house isn’t the least bit damp or musty three storeys I open windows and air gets through its air more than heat that keeps a house in decent spirits I think lot of people have their houses too hot now adays and it’s not so healthy

YES! It's just ticking over first thing in the morning and in the evening. I hate being cold

It’s warm here today, but sadly I’ve the heating on as I was halfway through painting the garden benches when the heavens opened. They’re blocking the hall now, next to a radiator, and I’m sweating cobs, as my DMIL used to say.

Luckygirl - I'm in the same position as you as husband is disabled and feels the cold. Happy to spending our Winter Fuel Payment and keep heating on all day while we are up and 24hrs in the real depth of winter but I have just bought a heated overthrow which he loves and hope I'll be able to keep the temperature at a lower level as I don't feel the cold so much - possibly because I always seem to be doing something or other!!

BlueBelle I don't have central heating either but have a multi fuel stove in one of the 2 reception rooms I use in the winter. I haven't lit it yet it's been so mild and my place is well insulated. A hot shower also warms me up when I get up.

I also think lots of people have heating up far too high and that it doesn't do you a lot of good especially if on in the bedrooms.

At times I haven't got the stove going I put on an oil free radiator, close the door and the room heats up quickly and is a pleasant heat. When stove is burning I can open the door of the room and the heat will lift the temperature of the rest of the bungalow. No dampness or mould here either. A large pallet of wood lasts all winter and electricity bill is low.

I do admit to hugging a hot water bottle for an hour or two on chilly evenings in Autumn/Spring and wearing 2 layers when the weather is pretty cold. It's my choice not to have gas central heating installed but all visitors always remark how cosy the rooms I live in are in the winter [although not the bedrooms!]

I have my thermostat set low, usually 15 and turn it up or down as necessary. My draughty old house is cold but I can’t afford to be warm. It’s been off since April and I don’t need it on yet.

Mornings and evenings here in the NE of Scotland. No heating on in the bedroom but on in the en suite.

Central heating on for an hour or two in the morning, a few hours at night but no heat in the bedroom.
Might put gas fire on in living room if having a read in the afternoon.
I never skimp on heat, I like my comfort too much!

I m a hot water bottle hugger too and when I sit down to watch the tv in the evenings (Autumn and spring) that’s me hottie bottle on my knee I used to find the office unbearable hot when I was at work and my next door neighbour has the heating on full blast and all the windows open how daft is that
My main room gets so cosy too and you only see my nose under my duvets in the bedroom so no big problem really

I have lived in my little flat, 1st floor, retirement living, for 4 years and have never switched the heating on in all that time. we have very old obsolete night storage heaters which are not cost effective and also not very effective at heating the flat either. I did purchase a small convector heater but that has only been used one evening 2 years ago. I guess I am lucky, I have a flat below me, one above and one either side so that helps keep the heat in I guess.
My daughters house which is a corner house if freezing, like an ice box.

Here in Australia very few older houses have it
My rented house has zero insulation either !!
So last Winter I looked like the Michelen Man !
