Shopping in Aldi the other day and needed 2 cartons of UHT milk (the long-life variety; keeps me going). A new case needed to be opened, but for the life of me I couldn't do it. They must be using stronger glue or perhaps I'm getting old. I asked a gentleman standing nearby who I thought (mistakenly) was a staff member; another customer, but he kindly opened it and handed me the 2 cartons. I thanked him and he said "No prob. GRANDAD" sad
I've got this far without anyone calling me that to my face, not in public anyway; my dreams were shattered. I had to have a stiff pick-me-up when I got home. confused

Recently I was in my local Waitrose holding a lovely '80' Birthday Balloon for my beloved Sister.
A young assistant walking along came up to me and wished me a very happy 80th birthday.

I am 66 years old, and before that I was feeling quite chipper.
I was completely deflated!!!

RUFUS2 you should be glad you are alive to use that pass, stop moaning and love life every day.

Mabon1; What pass? What on earth are you on about? confused

Rufus2 Wed 05-Sept-18 15:06:26

Mabon1; I think you have mistaken me for another poster. grin You may not know, but I'm living in Melbourne and I haven't any passes that you would know about. So I suggest you check your facts very carefully in future before attacking me. sad

Don't worry Ruf you did your best, I try to put light-hearted posts up, some people 'get it' some, sadly, just don't sad

Some years ago at the age of 66 I met up with some girlfriends in Dublin for the weekend. At the Guiness Experience I asked if there were any senior discounts. The cashier looked very suspiciously and said Yes but only for over 65s. That's okay I am 66. She the handed over two senior tickets as I was also paying for my friend. My friend wasnt too happy as she was only 54.

Rufus2, I laughed at your post! Not everyone has the same sense of humour I guess!

quizqueen Wed 05-Sept-18 16:20:48

Long life milk. UGH! I wouldn't touch the stuff.

NanaRayna Wed 05-Sept-18 16:34:59

I was very crushed by being mistaken for my partner's mother. Him being in his 50s and me just 61! shock

Oh dear, this does show how old, elderly, or simply older people are regarded in western society.

What's wrong with being mature and wise?

I remember being so chuffed at the age of 17 when a shop assistant asked me, "How can I help you, Miss?" I felt so grown-up and proud.

Let's start agitating for a society that values age and experience, shall we?

Wheeling my daughter in the pram, a boy on a bike nearly ran into me. I remonstrated with him, mildly, and he answered "F-off, Granny". I was 29! It has obviously stayed with me for 40-odd years, scarring me for life. smile

My friend's 19 yr old granddaughter started a college course a year late due to ill health. She told me the last time I saw her that she's loving it. She's the eldest by far so they all call her, 'Nana.' - affectionately, of course.

As I walk with a stick (I'm only 63) & have done so for a few years I find people are kind, not sure if it's the disability or my agehmm.

I have learnt over the years to play the "helpless female" although I'm quite capable in many ways. The staff at my local re-cycling centre are so helpful to every-one, it's their job & I'm always grateful for any help.

When I've travelled by train I struggle to get my case on/off the train, I don't usually have to ask for assistance as mostly people offer help.

My DD has trained GS1 to say Nan is old but Granny (my DM) is even older, she is 89grin

Long life milk. UGH! I wouldn't touch the stuff
Quizqueen; You don't know what you're missing. wink I'm in my nineties proving that it lives up to it's name.
I've forgotten what sour "fresh" milk smells like. I leave "the stuff" lying around on the kitchen bench (when I've forgotten to put it back in the frig.) with no probs.
Btw. I haven't seen a bad chuck's egg since I don't know when. Do they irradiate the chucks or their eggs? Strewth!. I've wandered off-topic; "elderly".
"Old boilers" not relevant. grin

Thanks everyone for your light- hearted postings; apart from one dissident sad ( I'm expecting a reply any day soon!) it's good to know we can take comments from the "foot-in mouth" brigade (family members excluded, of course!) in our stride and with good humour. grin
I remember from days of yore when driving slowly behind an obviously elderly driver and saying "come on grandad, get a move on", my darling Vera would say "calm down dear; you'll be like that one day".
That "day" arrived a while back and I can hear Vera saying " I told you so!" She wasn't wrong very often about me! smile

I remember when MIL had to go into hospital and got very upset because she was put in a ward 'with all these old ladies'.

She was 82 at the time and admittedly Mrs M was older than her at 90+, but the rest were younger than MIL!

I used to hate being refused an alcoholic drink in a pub when I was younger but actually old enough to buy one. One barman said to me 'You only look 15 when I was in fact 21 and wearing makeup.
Nowadays I wish I did look a few years younger than my age grin

Jalima1108 Thu 06-Sept-18 19:47:30

sory to correct you Rufus but it is 'chook' not 'chuck'.

Chuck is Charlie.
Chooks are Australian hens.

Maybelle, re the X-ray , when I had an MRI scan a couple of weeks ago the charming Indian gent asked “ are you pregnant TODAY madam?”. I had to stifle the urge to say “ no, but maybe by tomorrow?” ????

I sometimes shop in the little town where our children went to primary school. Quite often I see an old person who looks vaguely familiar and realise that forty years ago they were so-and-so's mother or father who I used to see sitting on the small chairs waiting to speak to the teacher on parents' evening. I can't understand why they are looking so old and wrinkly when obviously I haven't aged at all.

lemongrove Thu 06-Sept-18 22:47:10

not to worry Rufus at least he helped you out, I am not above playing the old lady card when I need something, particularly from a high shelf in the supermarket [although haven't been called Grandma yet by strangers]hmm

Jalima; Thanks for correcting my homework, teacher!grin I should have known better after having lived in Melb. for only 47½ years; I'm a slow learner, but will do better with my next homework.! confused
