Big Brother is washing you

I have just returned from the local shops. We have an independent pharmacy whose prices are competitive. I bought two toiletry items and paid cash. I then went into Tesco Express for food. At the self-checkout, along with my receipt came forward-dated money-off vouchers for those exact two toiletry products I had just bought for cash next door.

The store must now have me on CCTV looking around thinking What The … ?

If it was one product I might write it off as a timely coincidence knowing that, in the past, I have bought that product in Tesco. The other product (a special soap) I know I have never bought in their stores. I have only recently started to use it. My one and only previous purchase was in Boots Chemist.

How might this have happened?

I’m trying to be logical. If the product is being offered at a good price in the pharmacy then maybe it’s on special offer in other retailers so again it’s just a coincidence. I didn’t actually go check this second item on the Tesco Express shelves. Their toiletry range is very limited. It hadn’t occurred to me that they would even stock it and it may be something which is only available in their larger stores.

Weird, eh? Any ideas or theories? Or any other stories similar to this?

Oh dear, time to start wearing the foil hats!
I’m somewhat relieved that Big Brother was only watching you though and not washing you!

Sometimes coincidences do happen.

Surely Tesco don't pay anyone to sit and watch what people are buying next door, on CCTV? Do they?

Still, it's preferable to being washed by Big Brother! grin

BlueBelle Tue 17-Jul-18 16:06:48

Well I want to wash myself

lemongrove Tue 17-Jul-18 16:09:46

I think that the use of ‘washing’ was used on purpose ( the soap buys!) very good,Melting grin
Coincidence perhaps, but it certainly makes you wonder if all our purchases are instantly recorded by some vast central shopping experience agency somewhere ( the bowels of a Tesco Superstore?) I always thought it was only a matter of time before Tesco/China/Starbucks took over the world.
Your mission ( should you choose to accept it) is only to shop at the Co-op, pay with cash and wear dark glasses.
This post will self destruct in 30 seconds.Good luck.

Mmmm.
What does this big brother look like?
I'm going to be needing pics before its my turn to be washed.

nanaK54 Tue 17-Jul-18 17:33:19

Hmmm I haven't got a 'big brother' but I do have a younger brother - he certainly will not be washing me grin

I recently bought a new phone but the old one is still charged up and left at home. Twice I've come home from shopping and found a message (on my old phone) asking me to rate the store I've just visited. I could understand if the message was on my new phone, but not on the old one. confused Do they talk to each other?

OldMeg Tue 17-Jul-18 18:51:08

Yes

SueDonim Tue 17-Jul-18 20:03:00

More than once I've been chatting to dh then gone onto my iPad, only to find adverts for whatever was the topic of conversation!

Once, it was adverts exhorting me to buy a Porsche car. That's very unlikely to ever happen, unless I win the lottery, which I don't do! grin

MeltingMacaron Tue 17-Jul-18 20:22:49

kathsue I'm guessing you have registered your old number with the store and not the new one?

SueDonim There's a lot of covert advertising goes on on Facebook for example, tiny split second ads that sit behind other things on your newsfeed. I wonder if FB works in such a way that if the covert one doesn't to be working i.e they can't track a visit to that retailer's site, they weigh in with more obvious advertising.

SueDonim Tue 17-Jul-18 20:55:28

Well, I'm sure our technology is listening to us, MeltingMacaron. Better watch what we're saying!

Also, a weird question - are you by any chance a knitter or crocheter? smile

MeltingMacaron Tue 17-Jul-18 20:58:32

You mean the clue is in the name? Yes! A Scheepjes Whirler!

SueDonim Tue 17-Jul-18 21:02:02

I guessed right! I'm crocheting a shawl with a Poppin Candy Whirl at the moment. smile

Happy to chat over in the craft section, if you'd like. I'll start a thread ...

farview Tue 17-Jul-18 22:12:04

It's a 'scary world...

MamaCaz Wed 25-Jul-18 21:32:33

This thread immediately sprang to mind when I noticed a clothes advert on my screen a moment ago. I rarely go shopping for clothes, less often still for dresses, but the ad was for the type of dresses that I was looking at in a shop this morning!

Coincidence? I doubt it. I really might start turning my phone off in the future when I am out and about to stop this sort of cyber stalking!

M0nica Thu 26-Jul-18 07:06:00

They are unlikely to have been watching CCTV. More likely to be through something like use of a Nectar card or something like that that registers what you buy onto a common database.

That is why I do not have a Nectar card or anything similar.

OldMeg Thu 26-Jul-18 07:13:06

Just turn off your location setting.

Marydoll Thu 26-Jul-18 07:13:12

An advert for Clarks outlet keeps appearing when I'm on GN.
The other day a promo code popped up for 20% discount, but I didn't write it down.
I searched high and low on the internet yesterday, as I was buying shoes, but couldn't find the code anywhere.
The minute I paid for the shoes, the code appeared! ?

seacliff Thu 26-Jul-18 07:35:23

I get that ad too marydoll, but then I have been on their clarks outlet site. Sadly I didn't get the 20% off code. The outlet never has anything I want on my size, too common, size 7.

seacliff Thu 26-Jul-18 07:39:02

That is spooky about the Tescos vouchers. I'd love to know how it happened. Did you use a loyalty card at the chemist?

MeltingMacaron Thu 26-Jul-18 08:27:25

No seacliff. It's an independent pharamacy and I paid cash. I can only assume it was just a fantastic coincidence else paranoia creeps in and one starts to wonder if stores have installed bag tracking tech!

Which makes me laugh in a way. Any tech trying to analyse the content of my (hand)bag for example (and those of many other women I imagine) would crash immediately confused by all the stuff that lurks in there. Six lipsticks, a leaky pen, old train tickets, twopence, something that could be Ibuprofen or a peppermint, a pine cone, the spectacle cleaning cloth that's been missing for months, a plastic bag of dried-up wet wipes.

I've experienced the things other posters have mentioned. I closed my FB account because (amongst other reasons) I was tired or them tracking my browser history. One brief visit to a retailer site resulted in persistent FB ads for the same company.

harrigran Thu 26-Jul-18 09:09:04

I don't think it is a coincidence that we receive adverts for products, big brother really is watching. DH did a supermarket shop and then he received money off adverts for a product he had looked at but not bought. We were sitting in the study with our respective computers switched on when he was telling me about it, lo and behold up pops an advert for the product on my computer.

Sparklefizz Thu 26-Jul-18 11:05:25

It's when an advert pops up on your computer and all you've ever done is thought about the product ..... spooky eh?
