Abortion Time Limit

I'm thinking of starting a Government Petition to reduce the abortion time limit from 24 weeks to 10, and am researching what amount of support I could expect.

I became interested in the subject recently (not knowing much about abortion) when I came across the statistics for abortion in the UK. Since 1967, when the Abortion Act was first introduced, nine-million abortions have been carried out. That's 180,000, per year - equating to 493 per day!

Now, I'm not an anti-abortion fanatic, and I realise that some abortions are necessary for medical or other reasons, but when I delved a little deeper into the subject, I was horrified by the circumstances of late abortions.

Please take a look at my blog (Abortion - 50 Years On) - lynwaites.wixsite.com/writer-poet

I would appreciate your views. Would you consider signing the Petition?

Many thanks for your help.

its a no from me too,my babies were much wanted and loved and I cant think of any circumstances whare I would have had an abortion....but others are not as lucky.I couldn't force any woman to carry a child of rape,or where the infant would die within minutes of birth or be so disabled it would need 24/7 care and have no quality of life ..or even very young girls who didn't realise they were pregnant until after that 10 or 12 week deadline.I dont think and indeed I hope you wont get signatures for your petition.Lifes hard enough for some women without others taking control of what happens to their own bodies

As someone with a similar user name to you, I will just add my twopence worth. There is no way I would support reducing the time limit on abortion. The law is fine as it is.

The only change I would agree with is allowing women to take the second pill in their own homes instead of insisting they take it in the clinic and then travel home, often triggering the miscarriage on the route home.

No thanks it would be turning the clock back imo.

I think abortion is an awful thing, but we had a family friend who's girlfriend had an illegal abortion many years ago. They both had mothers who wouldn't countenance them getting married and she thought abortion was her only option. She was dumped on his door step, where she bled out. I don't think he even knew she was pregnant. He never married and his life was never the same. It's not a situation we want to go back to but with a ten week limit we might.

OldMeg Mon 02-Apr-18 22:29:25

No. No way would I support this.

It is important that rules on abortion are discussed in a considered way. To suggest a simple 10 week cut off point without looking at the realities and what the outcomes of this might be is frankly silly; and I speak as someone who has serious reservations about the number of abortions that are performed. But a bit of subtlety is needed. The realities are that making the decision to end a pregnancy is, in most cases, hugely difficult and emotional.

I was involved in research on behalf of the government into the Termination of Pregnancy Act a few years after its implementation and met many women who had faced this hard difficult decision. None of it as as simple as it might appear on the surface.

So no, I will not sign this petition.

I think the abortion limit is wrong at the moment, particularly when babies born at 22 weeks gestation can now be saved. However, your suggestion of making the limit 10 weeks is really implausible - some birth defects are not discovered until later in a pregnancy. You stand no chance at all of getting a change in the law. I wouldn't sign your petition. You perhaps have either not had children, or have certainly never been in the terrible situation of having to even consider a termination.

Spot on mcem. OP have you posted on MN yet? Go on - have the courage of your misogynistic convictions

MissAdventure Mon 02-Apr-18 23:52:04

I think its important to remember that late abortions are the absolute exceptions, not the rule.

Nope

LynneB59 Few babies born at 22 weeks survive and those who do usually have serious health issues. Even those born at 25, 26 weeks struggle to survive with the best neonatal care in the world.

We are mostly grannies on this site and so probably most of us really don't like the idea of abortion. To be honest, who does like abortion? However, we are wise enough to recognise that sometimes, at least, is the best option for a variety of reasons.

The Netherlands has very open abortion laws and one of the lowest rates of abortion, if not actually the lowest, in the Western world. Maybe that has something to do with their sex education that includes useful information about contraception. And before anyone suggests that that promotes teenage sexual activity and promiscuity, their teenagers tend to wait before entering into a sexual relationship.

I think this would be a backward step. As I understand it very few abortions are carried out at the later date.

My personal view is against abortion, however, I would not impose my personal belief onto another woman. I don't think any woman takes such a decision lightly.

No I would not sign such a petition.

sodapop Tue 03-Apr-18 08:35:07

Good post absent I agree and will not support this petition.

Iam64 Tue 03-Apr-18 08:39:10

Good post absent. The Netherlands has good sex/relationship education, open discussions about all kinds of 'social/policital' issues and generally a more balanced and liberal approach to these things than seems too often to be the case in the UK.

Nannylovesshopping Tue 03-Apr-18 08:50:15

A most definite NO

harrigran Tue 03-Apr-18 08:58:56

A no from me too.

Chinesecrested Tue 03-Apr-18 09:22:50

I think there's a case for reducing the date, especially as with the advance of modern healthcare, more babies are viable at an earlier stage. However, not to 10 weeks! 20 weeks would be more realistic, and would probably get more support.

stella1949 Tue 03-Apr-18 09:55:49

Its a no from me. I'm happy to trust women and their doctors when they decide about abortion.

maryeliza54 Tue 03-Apr-18 10:37:26

It’s only at the 20 week scan and sometimes later that really serious problems are identified so a 20 week limit is simply a nonsense. As has been said upthread, the vast majority of abortions are carried well before 20 weeks. Are you really saying that if a condition incompatible with life was discovered in a baby at 24 weeks for example you would force the mother to go to term and deliver a baby that woukd die within minutes - if so perhaps you could explain why this is acceptable Chinese?

Nonnie Tue 03-Apr-18 10:42:19

mcem if you mean the first line of my post it was because in another thread the OP had asked how you start a new thread.

Mapleleaf Tue 03-Apr-18 10:56:45

No, I would not sign.
I'm sure the decision to abort is not taken lightly and it's not for me or anyone else to try to dictate to others what they can and can't do. It's a very personal matter between the people involved.

goldengirl Tue 03-Apr-18 11:09:56

No. I wouldn't sign

humptydumpty Tue 03-Apr-18 11:10:16

No from me.

kitlong Tue 03-Apr-18 11:53:33

10 weeks is unrealistic and I wouldn't sign. However I would sign a petition for 16 weeks mothers personal choice, but I think 22 weeks for REAL medical reasons (genuine health implications for baby or mother) is fine. I think 24 weeks is too late.

maryeliza54 Tue 03-Apr-18 12:16:43

kitlong so what happens to a mother whose life is discovered to be in danger at say 26 weeks?
