We were talking about wedding rings the other day, and whether or not we take them off. Mine was off when I was pregnant, as my fingers were swollen, but, apart from then, I wear it all the time. A couple of my friends don’t wear one at all, and others only wear one occasionally. We also have a friend who swaps hers for a new one when she gets tired of her existing one.
What about you?

I’m another who never takes my wedding ring off. I also wear my great-grandmother’s wedding ring, and my engagement ring sandwiched between the two as it is very loose now. I’m too sentimental to take them off, especially since DH died.

Bellanonna Mon 26-Mar-18 16:46:38

Wear it all the time.

I wear my three rings all the time. A thin gold wedding band, a 4 ruby/3 diamond eternity ring and my solitaire engagement ring. I can only get them off with a lot of hand cream (and some pain) so they stay put. My hand would look naked to me without them.

I do regret choosing to have my husbands ring left on his hand, our daughters only 5 and 7, I didn't think one day I would have a grandson to pass it to, I only thought of the fact we exchanged rings

My original late 60’s wedding ring was enlarged a couple of times over the years til I thought it might just snap. We had both rings engraved inside with names and date of marriage. My dh still wears his original, i bought myself a new thinner plain band.
For my 60th birthday my husband was ’encouraged’ to get me a diamond ring, my first, which i wear every day. I love how it sparkles in the light. Now about to hit the next decade .....am wondering what should I ‘encourage’ him to give me this time.

In answer to kitty's question
No H won't wear a ring.
He said when we got married that to wear one doing the job he did would be dangerous and to have it and wear it only at weekends would be pointless. I agreed.
My dad wore one which I had after he died but sadly it was stolen in a burglary along with my first engagement ring, we replaced mine with insurance money.

I have had two eternity rings. The first one DH had made for me for our first anniversary. When my son was three, he saw it on the bathroom sink where I had put it on a piece of toilet tissue while I did some cleaning, and promptly decided to flush the toilet paper down the lavatory - along with the ring. It was replaced on our 40th anniversary with another but this time a half hoop. It doesn’t seem to fit as well as it did when I first had it and slips round my finger so that the stones always end up underneath; consequently I tend to “fiddle” with it constantly rather than just being able to wear it and forget it.

what's the point of having a ring if you don't wear it (unless, of course, you're divorced or a widow)?

Well, as I and several others have explained, the wide bands of the 70's make our fingers itch. Mine actually brought my finger out in a rather nasty patch of something or other - eczema possibly - which took months to clear up. So that's why I have a wedding ring and don't wear it. Should I throw it out then do you think? I quite like knowing I still have that lovely token of love that my DH placed on my finger all those years ago as we made our vows, albeit in a drawer and not on my finger smile

I have never taken my wedding ring off, been married for 54 years.

Cherrytree59 Mon 26-Mar-18 19:08:04

Annie My mother and father are buried together.
Both with their weddings rings on.

I'm afraid I'm on my third wedding ring I can't get my first one over my knuckle it's an ornate patterned one so couldn't have it enlarged. I can wear my second one n cold weather but not in hot weather so I'm wearing my third one now it slips a bit at the moment but in summer fits perfectly. I had my engagement ring enlarged but only wear it for special occasions. I know a few people who don't bother wearing one but my hand feels bare without one.

Mine is in my jewellery box as I can’t get it on due to a damaged and arthritic ring finger. I wear a half hoop eternity ring and diamond solitaire on my right hand. These are replacements for originals stolen in a burglary 5 years ago. DH’s ring in in my box too. Not sure I can get it on but I would like to wear it.

I used my grandmother’s rose gold 22ct wedding ring and I have had it sized up and down several times - I still love it. My mum’s wedding ring wore very thin, so she had it recast, along with her mother’s wedding ring. She died a few days ago and my daughter will have it remodelled for her wedding in August. Lots of history! My ring was on Nan’s finger for over 50 years and has been on mine for very nearly 40.

PamelaJ1 Mon 26-Mar-18 21:08:19

Take mine off all the time for work. I lost both wedding and engagement rings once. I think I threw them away by mistake.
Didn’t much like them, my DH bought me replacements that are much nicer.
It’s only a bit of metal you know, no soul! Still have the husband, that’s more important.

MawBroon Mon 26-Mar-18 21:12:58

That’s a lovely memento of her Jane!

I love my wedding ring. It’s a plain gold band and was cheap as chips, but I remember picking it out, I remember it being blessed during our wedding ceremony. To me it’s a symbol of all we promised each other 48 years ago. I wear it with pride.
I’m lucky that I’ve had no medical or sad reason to stop wearing it.

A burglar stole my beautiful, unusual engagement ring three years after we were married. I bought a washing machine with the insurance money. After twenty years my finger grew too large for my wedding ring, which couldn't be enlarged as it had a leaf pattern on it. DH bought me a new one but the following summer that was too tight so I had it enlarged. Come the autumn my finger had shrunk, the ring slipped off and was lost. I now wear a silver band and a dress ring.

Never take my wedding ring off. No, not quite true as I parted with it for 48 hours to have the 22ct gold re-polished when our second son got married. Other than that it has never left me for 49 years. I do have two engagement rings, my original and a very different style Mr C bought me for our 40th anniversary. I wear both according to what I’m wearing. I treasure my Mum’s wedding and engagement rings, they are always worn on my right hand at family celebrations, my way of including her. maw, I’m right handed but the fingers of my left hand are bigger than those on my right. It’s always puzzled me.

Kittye Mon 26-Mar-18 21:31:25

That's lovely JaneD

I took mine off once I started divorce proceedings against my husband, many years ago. It broke my heart doing that and I cried and cried that I had to do it. I married for life but sometimes it just doesn't go as planned.

I came back from the solicitors and threw it down the loo. It wouldn't flish away - it sat on the bottom of the pan. I retrieved it and it's now wrapped in tissue in a bedside drawer. I ought to give it to the children to sell really. It's a wide seventies band and cost a lot at the time, so I imagine it's value has increased.

My Mum never took her wedding ring off, ever. When she died she was buried with it on her finger. I was rather upset when a friend scoffed and said "Oh that would have been removed in the funeral parlour before the coffin lid was screwed on." Must admit, no one has any way of knowing. I have been thinking about that ever since.

Sorry to change the thread direction with an unhappy tale.

MissAdventure Mon 26-Mar-18 22:09:42

I don't think that would have happened. I used to work for an undertaker, (looking after his wife, who was still alive!) and he told me that peoples belongings are kept with them.

Purpledaffodil Mon 26-Mar-18 22:47:01

I always wear my engagement ring and wedding ring, have only taken them off when fingers swelled in pregnancy. On my right hand I have my great grandmother’s wedding ring which my grandmother gave to my mother because DM was pregnant with me and her thin wartime wedding ring had snapped. It may sound a bit twee, but I feel I am maintaining a connection with three strong women!

callgirl1 Mon 26-Mar-18 23:07:09

My wedding ring is a plain 18ct gold band that cost £4.50 in 1963. Apart from going to be enlarged about 9 or 10 years ago, it hasn`t been off my finger for nearly 55 years. After 23 years of marriage my husband bought me a half eternity ring, which split at the back about 2 weeks before he died, he told me to get it repaired, which I did, got it back just before he died. It`s just split again, my daughters said not to bother, but I know that my husband would want me to have it mended, so it`s at the jewellers again. He never had a wedding ring, partly because it would have been dangerous in his job, and also because he thought that men who wore jewellery were "cissies"!

Synonymous Mon 26-Mar-18 23:56:35

I am so sad that I can no longer wear any of my lovely rings on my arthritic fingers and it does feel very strange after more than 50 years. I am thinking of having them altered but am not sure if it is worth doing as my fingers may well change even more dramatically.
I had my favourite aunt's wedding ring restyled into a lovely dress ring with our birth stone added and it was much admired. It went missing from my kitchen last year while we had visitors from DH's family and in spite of making delicate opportunities for it to 'anonymously reappear' it never has. sad

I have worn my mothers wedding rings since she died in 2003. They fit me perfectly and I was the lucky one she wanted to have them. She had her band on the day she died and the nurse was kind enough to get it off after we left the hospital. I was able to have it on my finger the same day. I remember as a small child admiring her emeral cut ring and asking her if I could have it someday. They mean the world
to me. My husband doesn’t mind I don’t wear the one I was married with.
