I usually have one or two glasses at the weekend but rarely in the week. I do sometimes feel tempted in the week but as DH rarely drinks I don’t open a bottle for myself.

What about you.

Annsixty, you definitely don't sound a lush, & heaven knows you're more than earning your right to anything that helps you. Anyone who'd judge you a) isn't worth bothering about and b) has clearly never dealt with taking care of a family member or spouse with dementia. Anyone who's been there understands. You can feel like you're drowning ... then you notice that corks float ...! All the best to you.

It may be the circles I move in or I may be oblivious to it, but I have never experienced anyone being looked down upon for not drinking alcohol.

There's always at least one person in the group who is driving or just doesn't fancy any alcohol and will order water, Coke or juice and no one thinks anything of it.

I've just remembered a very strange girl who we had to dinner once. We handed out sherry beforehand (this was in the 1970s) and poured wine with the meal. She never said just "no thanks" - she took the but left it standing, and then started to rant about drinking alcohol when we poured the wine.

We would have thought nothing of her saying "no thank you, I don't drink alcohol" (which would have saved us wasting that glass of sherry) but she made such a drama of it, as if she was expecting us to pin her down and pour it in her mouth.

I have had three small sherries this week on different nights and they were delicious with a cube of ice.

My two grandsons gave me a hot water bottle with the cover saying ‘Nan loves US, SHERRY &TENNIS’ well they got that right.

I had a glass of sherry last night, simply because I fancied one. Enjoyed it very much! ( One of my "occasions when I fancy a drink") ?

I said upthread that I rarely drink..... reading this thread, though, made me really fancy a glass of sherry, and I've just found a bottle of amontillado in the cupboard, hurrah! Bottoms up wink
