I usually have one or two glasses at the weekend but rarely in the week. I do sometimes feel tempted in the week but as DH rarely drinks I don’t open a bottle for myself.

What about you.

I don't really like wine. only the occasional glass of a good sturdy red when eating a meal out. In fact I can almost say that I only consume alcohol of any kind when I am eating.

I do make a couple of bottles of sloe gin every year and that gets consumed, mainly in winter, sipped from a small glass a a night cap just before I go to bed.

It is not a matter of principle or virtue, I just do not like the taste of most alcoholic drinks and dislike the effect they can at the time it is consumed and later.

Birthdays Christmas and an odd glass now and then Not that keen hate red can tolerate white
Glass of cold cider occasionally in the summer
Can’t abide spirits or champagne or beer

kittylester Tue 06-Feb-18 16:02:09

teetime - I presume you mean Coke from a bottle!! grin

Love red wine and have a couple of glasses most nights. Studies have shown that areas in the med where people have the same enjoy greater longevity than anywhere else, and that being teetotal has fewer benefits than drinking red wine. Thought I'd post as so many moderate or abstemious posts on here any others who like me enjoy stipple may think they're alone lol ???

Nanna58 Tue 06-Feb-18 16:03:59

Tipple! Spell check- I haven't started quaffing already!

I enjoy a scotch before dinner and a glass of wine with my meal. So I'll say cheers to you all "boozers"! ?? smile Don't like drinking at lunch..Spoils my "cocktail time".. I'm nearly 74 and in good health so far.

Haven't cooked a dinner in over 20 years without a vodka and soda for company!
I blame Keith Floyd.

Tegan2 Tue 06-Feb-18 16:29:40

Very rarely. However, I can keep it in the house [the S.O. always has a bottle or two opened/unopened floating around] and not drink it. Whereas, if I have anything like Advocaat, Tia Maria etc in the house I can drink it like pop cause I like the taste. So I don't keep any here.

Everyday!!!

carol58 Tue 06-Feb-18 16:35:07

I'm afraid it's feast or famine with me. Can go several weeks without a drink but when I have a night out or am just in the mood at home (usually with friends though!) then I can easily drink a whole bottle. Naughty I know but hey, life's for living!

kitty really I'm not that much of an old hippy. No my drug of choice has always been alcohol. My friends husband is a pathologist who drinks a few glasses of red every night. He confirms that the alcohol guidelines were based on guesswork rather than robust research. The only things that put me off is the calorie content and driving I never even have one alcoholic drink if driving and I'm out tonight to the golf club committee without DH so its a cup of tea for me.

NanKate Tue 06-Feb-18 16:36:09

Kitty I too like a drink or two whilst preparing the supper and maybe a nice cheese biscuit or an oat cake.

Whenever I fell like one if I am cooking dinner in the week I may slurp one. Found a bottle in the cupboard left over from Christmas, not that good so added soda water lemon and ice and had a spritzer.

I have at least 2 glasses of wine every night, or G+T and a glass of wine.

We went out in the evening yesterday and I had 2 units before we went out and 2 lagers (halves) and a g+t during a pub quiz. Not the norm for me though. I am trying to have 2 dry nights a week, but it doesn't work out usually.

If GDs come I have only 1 though, and only if we're having a meal.

Ages since I was drunk though. Haven't had a hangover for many years. I'm not overweight at all.

Beginning to feel I drink too much now, in comparison to others on this thread.

Most people, I know, are economical with the truth about their drinking. The slurred words and red curves at the corner of the mouth are a give away.
The liver is a very forgiving organ and does not give any symptoms until it is really damaged.

Old meg- it’s always 5o’clock somewhere in the world?

PamelaJ1 Tue 06-Feb-18 17:00:46

In fact it’s 5 now ,just off to get a glass!

callgirl1 Tue 06-Feb-18 17:04:15

A couple of wine glasses of pear cider with my Sunday dinner.
I love port and lemonade, but usually only drink it when I`m out for a meal, which isn`t all that often, I`ll usually have one or sometimes 2. I had 2 bottles of port bought me for Christmas, but have only had 3 drinks of it so far. Never touch spirits, hate `em, and enjoy an occasional light beer in hot weather.

I join the French crew! It is such a different culture here. Rarely see anyone drunk and glasses of wine are small and guilt free! I have a glass or maybe 2 most nights (small glass, not the third of bottle you might get in a winebar in London!) and look forward to that time in the evening when I am preparing dinner. Rarely drink in the day unless it's a special lunch with friends.
Some posts sound quite self righteous in their abstinence!

Ahh, Port, love it. Keep it for special occasions with fellow Port lovers. We drink red wine with red meat and pasta, white with chicken. Will open a bottle maybe once a week with a meal-not every day. Mostly Cabernet Sav or Malbec and Reisling or Fume Blanc. DH likes a glass of Brandy now and then. I like it for a Hot Toddie. Better than over the counter cold medication for making you have a good nights rest when you have a cold.

I’m with the drinkers, I read an article which said over 50s were the biggest boozers, not the young, oldies tend to drink mostly at home. I did dry January and trying to just drink at weekends when OH and I will share a bottle on Fridays and Saturdays, sometimes Sundays if we have family over. Of course are are exceptions- when we go out, have friends in, go on holiday, birthdays, a nice summer evening cocktail in the garden etc. But I would generally say we do keep to the guidelines , having 3 or 4 alcohol free days per week . Yes life is for living, and what’s the use of denying yourself all of life’s pleasures just to have a couple of extra years in a care home.

Hey anxiousgran, that's why I posted, the thread was beginning to look a bit lopsided even without tha beer glasess?

Nanna58 Tue 06-Feb-18 17:50:31
