It's also Groundhog Day, when the marmot emerges from his burrow. If it's sunny and he sees his shadow he will go back in and there will be six more weeks of winter!

A neighbour used to use the term 'damping in the wind' when it was just about to drizzle.
My mum used to say 'it's the fairies moving their furniture' when there was thunder and lightning and I as a little one used to try to guess what furniture was being moved!!

Hello, annsixty! Can you explain "February fildyke" to me? It's in a song lyric that I'm performing around Christmas, and while I assume it's a type of precipitation, I'll feel better if I know what it actually means while singing it! Also...new member, first post, so please be gentle!

It rains all February, and the ditches fill with the water.
Dyke is the old word for ditch

On viewing the cloud around Ailsa Craig off the Ayrshire coast;

Collar and cap, it’s going to be wat.
Collar and tie, it’s going to be dry.

There’s also, ‘ rain before seven, dry at eleven’.

The North winds will blow and we shall have snow.
