Coffee shops

Coffee shops are making millions - Starbucks and similar. I remember the Kardomah coffee shops in the 60s. The waitresses wore brown cotton overalls, but my main memory is that wonderful smell of roasting coffee beans. The aroma wafted down the street - you could smell it, and you just had to go in and have a coffee. Much missed. Proper cups too, not those throwaway disposal ones.

At least now, coffee grounds are soon going to be put to good use. They are extracting the oil and are going to use it on London buses. Brilliant.

I don't remember them but they sound lovely.
We have several Costa Coffees near us and they are so busy and noisy - and never pay a visit to the loo, it will definitely put you off your coffee...

Used to love Lyons Corner Houses. Remember the roll of ice cream wrapped in paper that tasted delicious and the waitress service.

You can ask for the used coffee grounds in most shops, they are supposed to be good to keep cats and slugs at bay. They worked in my garden for quite awhile.

There used to be a wonderful coffee shop in the town where I worked.
The smell as you walked by was delicious, and inside, it was dark, and everyone sat in curtained off booths.

Costa - like the coffee, loathe the asymmetrical saucers!

NotTooOld Tue 21-Nov-17 12:01:18

Am I the only one to avoid Costas? I had a cappucinno (is that spelled right?) once in a hospital Costa and it was disgusting. I try to patronise only independent coffee shops.

MissAdventure Tue 21-Nov-17 12:09:26

I've spent more time in a hospital Costa than I care to think about. Costa lot, too!

NotTooOld Tue 21-Nov-17 12:11:44

MissA - you're right there! Hope you are not still having to spend time in them.

MissAdventure Tue 21-Nov-17 12:16:08

Sadly not, nottooold.. I used to go to every appointment with my daughter, but she died 3 weeks ago. That's the first time I've 'said' it outright on here.

Greyduster Tue 21-Nov-17 12:23:22

Oh Lord, MissA. I am so very sorry to hear that sad!

MissAdventure Tue 21-Nov-17 12:28:08

Thank you, greyduster. I don't know what else to say, really. Feel a bit sheepish now.

Stansgran Tue 21-Nov-17 12:31:57

It's good that you feel this is a safe place. I'm so sorry for your loss.

kittylester Tue 21-Nov-17 13:43:02

So sorry MissAdventure. Are you glad you've said it? Was it a sudden death?

MissAdventure Tue 21-Nov-17 13:47:43

I'm a bit shellshocked that I said it, kitty. My daughter had cancer. She had battled it for years, so I suppose I thought she was invincible. So I suppose it was expected, but so unexpected, at the end. She was only 35.

GillT57 Tue 21-Nov-17 13:49:34
