This man Dave from USA asked me to be his friend on messenger. I thought, why not, so accepted him. We exchanged pleasantries etc. It was not long before he told me that I was gorgeous (haha) I fell for it. I’m 72, he is 55. He did look really gorgeous judging by his photo. He said age was no problem. After a few weeks of him telling me he had fallen for me he got on to the subject of money. He wanted to know what my income every month was, next thing was he wanted me to have a load of money paid into my account for him by being his beneficiary. He works on an oil rig btw. The next request for money was, his son is in a boarding school in USA and has overspent his allowance. He wanted me to send over money to him. He bullies and pressures me. I’ve said No, and I won’t be sending money. Does he sound like a scammer.?.or conn man ?. He is a young widower. I just fancied chatting to someone new.

Eeek!! Head for the hills, is my advice! It sounds like a big scam to me. Chatting to someone new is great, but that does NOT involve money!!! Good luck flowers

Ilovecheese Thu 16-Nov-17 18:28:54

It is a scam, sorry. Can you "unfriend" him?

Welshwife Thu 16-Nov-17 18:33:28

I think you can report that sort of thing to Facebook too.

Grannyknot Thu 16-Nov-17 18:41:00

I'm amazed that you are in any doubt that this is a con. How does someone just ask you to be his friend on Messenger? Messenger is for messages between people who are already friends on Facebook.

harrigran Thu 16-Nov-17 18:43:24

He is not for real, he is probably a Nigerian criminal, unfriend him and read up on how to keep yourself safe online.

BlueBelle Thu 16-Nov-17 18:46:03

Oh dear NEVER NEVER NEVER accept a friend request from a stranger I play on a word game and I m always getting these American men telling me how gorgeous I am (never had a Brit tell me when I m playing the word game always US) I tell them I m there to play a game then I let them talk to them self The other evening one tried to start the conversation ten times before he got the idea I was only there to play the word game
Unfriend him and BLOCK him immediately if you don’t know how to block ask me and I ll guide you through it It’s not hard

judypark Thu 16-Nov-17 18:52:00

This piece of $hit is not 55.
His profile picture is likely pinched.
There is no son at boarding school.
Which oil rig?
He is not a widower.
Did you feel it necessary to ask him about his financial circumstances when your correspondence began?
Please block him. It's one of the oldest scams in the Internet world and I'm amazed that it's still going on.

vampirequeen Thu 16-Nov-17 18:52:51

Sorry but as everyone else has said, this is a scam.

BlueBelle Thu 16-Nov-17 18:58:32

Grannyknot anyone can send a message request on messenger if you don’t know the, you don’t answer but obviously the poster accepted his request

Elegran Thu 16-Nov-17 18:59:28

Did you tell him how much money goes into your account every month? Did you tell him your account details?

How often do you see advice on how to treat these swindling scumbags? Not often enough, it seems, as it doesn't seem to have reached you. I am afraid he saw the word M U G tattoed on your forehead.

If he knows your A/C details, change them immediately. Change your email address too, and report him.

Coolgran65 Thu 16-Nov-17 19:10:44

I never ever accept a friend request from someoneI don't know.

Without wishing to be rude..... how can you not realise this is a scam.
Block him immediately.

BBbevan Thu 16-Nov-17 19:16:36

Absolutely a scam. Go no furtherAlgieswife This is a very well known scam. I am surprised you accepted his message in the first place

I know I am stupid BUT actually, I'm not
Actually, Val, you are.

Ailsa43 Thu 16-Nov-17 19:19:01

Scam, Scam, Scam, Scam!!! run for the hills...this scam is as old as the hills...

BlueBelle Thu 16-Nov-17 19:22:01

This is really serious Algieswifval Did you really really believe this is a 55 year old widower with a son at boarding school Have you never heard about scammers I feel really shocked
A) never accept a stranger friend request
B) never believe anyone who tells you youre gorgeous ... you might be but genuine people don’t open with that line
C) was there No warning bells when he requested money
I can’t believe you are asking if we think it may be a scam It has SCAM in big capital letters all over it from the first moment
Do not send any more messages and block him so he can’t see anything else from you
Stick to your husband to talk to or your girl friends or even gransnet

petra Thu 16-Nov-17 19:28:49

I think someone's bored.

M0nica Thu 16-Nov-17 19:29:27

How many times have scams using this technique featured in newspapers, on the radio and television. I am amazed that OP has never read them.

It couldn't be more obviously a scam than if he started his contact with you saying 'Hi, I am a 25 year old scammer from Nigeria using fake photos and a good line in chat to try and con you out of all the money you possess.

Elegran Thu 16-Nov-17 20:12:11

That's it, Petra There can't be anyone left on the planet who would think this bloke is genuine. They do say, though, that there is one born every minute, and they wouldn't keep trying it on unless they won a few here and there. DH worked with someone who used to go to the Palais and asked every girl he danced with whether she put out. He said the occasional yes was worth all the noes.

Jalima1108 Thu 16-Nov-17 20:17:45

Did you mention this new friend to Alge?
hmm

ps there is scammer infiltrating FB at the moment, DD warned us all about him, he has a Spanish-sounding name, it wasn't Dave.

Elrel Thu 16-Nov-17 20:30:19

Why would anyone reply to a stranger who shows interest in their income?!

MamaCaz Thu 16-Nov-17 20:41:06

I personally know someone who has fallen for this kind of scam, not once but TWICE! I also know someone whose mother was scammed out of her entire savings, which was no small amount. Last thing I heard, she doesn't seem to have learnt her lesson either.
The OP may be a wind-up, but I wouldn't count on it as unfortunately there are still a lot of very gullible -and lonely - people out there.

Grannyknot Thu 16-Nov-17 21:48:14

Thank you BlueBelle I didn't know that. No odd bod has ever tried to be my Messenger friend smile

BlueBelle Thu 16-Nov-17 21:52:46

Well I have had it happen, strangely it’s always Americans, but I just decline and block their names, simple as
I did have a look at ones profile before I blocked and it was full of guns and gun culture posts!!
