This man Dave from USA asked me to be his friend on messenger. I thought, why not, so accepted him. We exchanged pleasantries etc. It was not long before he told me that I was gorgeous (haha) I fell for it. I’m 72, he is 55. He did look really gorgeous judging by his photo. He said age was no problem. After a few weeks of him telling me he had fallen for me he got on to the subject of money. He wanted to know what my income every month was, next thing was he wanted me to have a load of money paid into my account for him by being his beneficiary. He works on an oil rig btw. The next request for money was, his son is in a boarding school in USA and has overspent his allowance. He wanted me to send over money to him. He bullies and pressures me. I’ve said No, and I won’t be sending money. Does he sound like a scammer.?.or conn man ?. He is a young widower. I just fancied chatting to someone new.

He's p*ssed off because you rumbled what he really was instead of paying up as he hoped.

I have blocked him. He called me heartless and a liar. The last message from him was , go back to you old husband and chat to him.

No a million times no

Mapleleaf Mon 20-Nov-17 15:27:58

Ignore him. Don't believe a word. It's a huge scam!!!!

Nelliemoser Mon 20-Nov-17 14:04:51

The use of English sounds too good for most of the Nigerian scammers. Are they running out of old relatives with massive fortunes coming your way with million's if you send your bank details ?

glammanana Fri 17-Nov-17 09:52:56

Algeswife Your scammer has probably never even set foot on US soil he will be working out of a cyber cafe some where in Nigeria along with all the other "Daves" from the local area who are all Generals/Majors/or Wing Commanders whose photos have been lifted from magazines etc.

Since I began tweeting (at publishers insistence) I've had messages from various extremely dodgy looking men. I never respond in any way!

Anyone who's ever been a victim of a scam will know how easy some conman make it to fall for their lies. So glad you posted on here Alge. Here's a link to our scam awareness page in case it's helpful. Action Fraud is a good organisation to start with if you need advice.

In answer to you all. Alarm bells did ring. I never gave him any account details. I wouldn’t have done. When I told him no way and not possible, he called me a liar. I have learned a lesson, I have blocked him now. I admit I was bored that’s why I accepted him on messenger and was flattered, by his comments, stupidly. No, never told my husband he would have gone mad, justifiably. Lesson learned.

Is he an American general?
Some of the scammers are, so one wonders why they are always short of a bob or two as generals are well paid as far as I know.

Well I have had it happen, strangely it’s always Americans, but I just decline and block their names, simple as
I did have a look at ones profile before I blocked and it was full of guns and gun culture posts!!

Grannyknot Thu 16-Nov-17 21:48:14

Thank you BlueBelle I didn't know that. No odd bod has ever tried to be my Messenger friend smile

MamaCaz Thu 16-Nov-17 20:41:06

I personally know someone who has fallen for this kind of scam, not once but TWICE! I also know someone whose mother was scammed out of her entire savings, which was no small amount. Last thing I heard, she doesn't seem to have learnt her lesson either.
The OP may be a wind-up, but I wouldn't count on it as unfortunately there are still a lot of very gullible -and lonely - people out there.

Elrel Thu 16-Nov-17 20:30:19

Why would anyone reply to a stranger who shows interest in their income?!

Jalima1108 Thu 16-Nov-17 20:17:45

Did you mention this new friend to Alge?
hmm

ps there is scammer infiltrating FB at the moment, DD warned us all about him, he has a Spanish-sounding name, it wasn't Dave.

Elegran Thu 16-Nov-17 20:12:11

That's it, Petra There can't be anyone left on the planet who would think this bloke is genuine. They do say, though, that there is one born every minute, and they wouldn't keep trying it on unless they won a few here and there. DH worked with someone who used to go to the Palais and asked every girl he danced with whether she put out. He said the occasional yes was worth all the noes.

M0nica Thu 16-Nov-17 19:29:27

How many times have scams using this technique featured in newspapers, on the radio and television. I am amazed that OP has never read them.

It couldn't be more obviously a scam than if he started his contact with you saying 'Hi, I am a 25 year old scammer from Nigeria using fake photos and a good line in chat to try and con you out of all the money you possess.

petra Thu 16-Nov-17 19:28:49

I think someone's bored.

BlueBelle Thu 16-Nov-17 19:22:01

This is really serious Algieswifval Did you really really believe this is a 55 year old widower with a son at boarding school Have you never heard about scammers I feel really shocked
A) never accept a stranger friend request
B) never believe anyone who tells you youre gorgeous ... you might be but genuine people don’t open with that line
C) was there No warning bells when he requested money
I can’t believe you are asking if we think it may be a scam It has SCAM in big capital letters all over it from the first moment
Do not send any more messages and block him so he can’t see anything else from you
Stick to your husband to talk to or your girl friends or even gransnet

Ailsa43 Thu 16-Nov-17 19:19:01

Scam, Scam, Scam, Scam!!! run for the hills...this scam is as old as the hills...
