I have found recently that i dont enjoy going out in the evening very much now.If i have been out during the morning or afternoon i enjoy my evenigs at home with the tv remote, gransnet and facebook. I am off out to play in a bowls match this evening and really am not looking forward to it. I am fine playing during the afternoon but i really value my evenings at home. Is this a sign of getting old?? It's not just because the dark evenings are here i started to feel this way during the summer. Anyone else feel this way.

I go out in the evening to choir twice a week and now and again go out for a meal and a drink with a friend in the evening.

I would probably go out more if my husband was keen on doing so, although when winter really sets in it's a bit more of an effort to leave a warm house.

I really hate being out in the evening. I enjoy my time at home with TV, books, GN and various other forums. I struggle to stay awake in the evening if we're on holiday which is a shame for DH. I try to make an effort at those times though. I'm dreading a dinner and dance we have to go to. blush

We used to go out often in the evening - usually to Bridge Clubs, which we both enjoyed (he's a good player, I liked the socialising.)
But now neither of us like driving in the dark, (especially after the liquid supper provided at french bridge clubs wink)

I'm the same. An ex colleague is having a leaving do tomorrow evening and I have made an excuse not to go, despite the fact my friends are going. I don't know what is wrong, as I used to love a night out.
I'd rather be cosy at home. Perhaps I am getting old!

Well, we are all getting older which is far better than the alternative. I haven’t enjoyed going out at night for years. Early evening isn’t so bad. Would far rather go out for lunch than dinner, go out for the day than go to an evening “do”. What doesn’t help is that however late I go to bed I always wake up at a ridiculously early time. It has been like this for as long as I can remember so I must be exceedingly old!

I still like a night out - we go to a weekly pub quiz, and enjoy meals out and any parties that we get asked to. But I must admit I hate the dark, cold nights now and like to snuggle up at home. The last few times we've been to the theatre we've chosen a matinee, and we were at an afternoon showing at the pictures just today. Definitely getting old. grin

I'm the same.

We are a group of about 8 female friends who have known each other for 40 years. How things have changed.
It used to be that we'd meet up and go to a Christmas function, lots of music and dancing. DHs would pick us up in the early hours. Good fun and a few drinks,

Roll the clock forwards.
We are all varied, a few widows, a couple of us remarried, One paralysed in a nursing home. We prefer to now have a nice lunch, which can stretch on quite a bit, but none of us want to be out late late.
Well, there's one who is still a party animal, but for the rest of us It's nice to get home in time for a sit down, and settle down to perhaps a 9 o'clock drama.
How things change.

DH's operatic group now do their Saturday 'evening' performance on Saturday afternoons as the audience (and some performers!) are getting older and like to be home before dark. Many more tickets have been sold so there are a lot of older active people out there who like to be home for supper.

Trying to avoid going out in the evening has been a feature of my life for about 18 years. I used to love dancing till the early hours but for years now, I've found that a late night means I have less energy to enjoy the following day. I love seeing friends but as others have said, I enjoy long, late lunches and increasingly, love breakfast out get to gethers. Afternoon tea is a joy but having friends round to eat at 8 or going to friends to eat at 8 no longer appeals to me. I make exceptions over the festive period but make sure I have a quiet day (or two) after a jolly evening get together.
yep - I'm getting old and that's so much better than the alternative. I'm embracing this phase of life and relishing Leonard Cohen's line "I ache in the places I used to play". Bless that poet and troubadour.

I'm with you coolgran like to socialise over a long lunch with friends then a cosy evening at home - bliss.

Jalima1108 Thu 09-Nov-17 19:34:44

DH has just gone out - he has evening meetings a few times a month but I am quite happy to stay in, especially in the winter.

Niobe Thu 09-Nov-17 19:37:55

I don't mind being out late on long summer evenings but in the winter I hate to be out after about 6pm.

Galen Thu 09-Nov-17 19:38:07

I don’t go out at all unless I have to. The exception being going on cruises.
I only go out to sit on tribunals or dental appointments otherwise.
I don’t entertain either or see anyone except my cleaner and gardner and my next door neighbor who pops in on Sunday evening for a drink.
When I retire next year I’ll be practically housebound.
Sounds miserable,but I’m ok!
Did enjoy archery but this year arthritis and fatigue have got in the way. Perhaps next year.

Day6 Thu 09-Nov-17 19:39:21

I like getting together with my friends and we still go out once a month for a meal. We have talked about having lunch together now we are all retired. I am in favour!

I have two invitations already for evening gatherings in December but must admit I am not looking forward to them, mainly because of late, I hate driving at night. It's all semi-rural around here. So many roads are unlit so oncoming lights, the glaring LED ones, tend to dazzle so much and blind me in the darkness.

Yes, I have become a stay at home person in the evenings although I find myself driving back home late some evenings after a baby-sitting stint.

And another thing - pub prices for soft drinks! If I am driving I cannot drink, so begrudge the cost of an evening out when I can't even make merry! It seems slightly pointless given I won't enjoy the drive home either.

cornergran Thu 09-Nov-17 20:09:25

I don’t think it’s necessarily about getting older perhaps just being honest about what we do and don’t like to do. So go out at night if you feel like it or stay in if you prefer. Just don’t worry about it, neither is wrong.

Chewbacca Thu 09-Nov-17 21:00:28

Every October/November I would start to dread the office Christmas party and I would start to mentally formulate my excuses for not attending. But a couple of years ago, I decided not to use the usual "clash of dates with another appointment " or suddenly "stricken with an upset stomach". Now I just say "thank you for inviting me, but no thank you". The thought of traipsing off out, in the dark, when I could be at home in comfort is a no brainer for me. Don't mind the occasional trip to the theatre, but that's pretty rare too these days.

Jalima1108 Thu 09-Nov-17 21:05:21

When I was in my teens and twenties a Saturday night in was considered to be a complete failure and a disaster! No date? [shock horror!
Now I enjoy cooking something different, having a glass or two of wine and settling down for the evening.

Oh dear, I never thought I'd say that.

MissAdventure Thu 09-Nov-17 21:08:07

I've never been a fan of going out. Much rather stay in, where it's warm and I can do my own thing, and look like the back end of a bus whilst doing it.

lemongrove Thu 09-Nov-17 21:16:05

Yes, probably a feature of getting older.....but don’t fight it, enjoy it! grin
The dark colder evenings are just made for staying in, and remember that going out in the evenings had to be done in the past, because we were at work during the day.
The great thing about retirement is that we can do things in the mornings and afternoons now.
There are a few things I do ( evening) WI, another club,or meeting friends, but I wouldn’t want it to be more than once a week, once November is here.

ninathenana Thu 09-Nov-17 22:53:00

I don't much like going out in the evening either. I need 48 hrs notice to psych myself up to it. Hate to have it sprung on me.

Grandma2213 Fri 10-Nov-17 01:12:50

I think I must be a bit strange. I grab any chance I can of going out, though I don't actually have much of a social life or ever did have come to think of it.

I have one DS who seems to understand this need and I have been on holiday with him and his family a couple of times, where I join in everything and dance till the early hours. Sometimes he invites me for tea and to stay the night and I love it. I never want to go home.

When I am stuck in the house I actually feel physically ill!! I have to go for walks, the gym, swimming, basically anything to get away from home, even an unnecessary trip to Tesco so I can have a chat to the checkout staff!

Maybe I need counselling. I can go in the evenings if they're busy in the day!

Menopaws Fri 10-Nov-17 05:45:28

I'm more than happy with my own company and Dog as husband often out in the evening as he has another job but I have a friend like you grandma2213 who hates her day off even and has to have a plan for every evening otherwise she goes mad. I worry if she was unable to get out what she would do then.
I used to be out all the time when young but now I'm more than happy at home in the evening

kittylester Fri 10-Nov-17 07:17:55

I would much rather be at home but am quite happy for people to come here. Like Jalima I enjoy cooking something nice and staying at home.

harrigran Fri 10-Nov-17 09:06:04

We prefer to have lunch out instead of dinner. We go to an Antiquarian meeting once a month which is held on an evening but that is it for activities after dark.
