My whole life has changed since this morning. My eldest son and his family are now out of my life all because i dared to express a concern that they were getting into debt for holidays. My DIL has decided that i have always disliked her, not true, and i am floored as i dont know where that has come from, obviously it has put my son in a difficult posistion and he has to side with his wife. They are stopping me from having GD for the October half term and i am numb at the moment with shock, i am sure the grief will follow. My stomach at the moment is in a huge knot and i feel really sick. All because i expressed an opinion!!!

Agree with hellomonty and anya. In future 'zip it'.

"Zip it"- unnecessarily abrasive language I think, especially when someone is already upset.

Not neccessary to grovel, an apology will do.
We forget that remarks about money, although given as honest opinions really annoy, because what is suggested is that they are not adult enough to manage it ( could well be true!) Still, better to say nothing.
I must also add that sometimes offering ‘largesse’ can be taken the wrong way too, so think carefully before giving money to AC.

Travelsofar..... not sure how the apples came into it but you could try a bit of humble pie. I'm afraid the reality is that you really do have to watch everything you say to DiLs. I am extremely careful what I say to mine as I did get into trouble over something I bought for my DG.
Sooner rather than later with your DiL. Try texting her first rather than face to face or write her a letter. If you haven't done it already do it today.

after sending seperate texts to son and DIL, then a joint one i have got a message from my son today he will ring me in a couple of days!!! So pleased and trying not to build up my hopes that all will be well but really hoping it will be!!!

I haven't joined in this conversation because I've just had an incident with my mum and I'm still a bit raw. But my fingers are crossed for you?

Alima Wed 11-Oct-17 21:14:22

maggiemay Quote. dil has decided I have always disliked her. continually disliked ?or never liked ? hmm your point being?
sarahellenwhitney, your post as quoted above makes no sense whatsoever. Could you translate please?

The OP said
My DIL has decided that i have always disliked her, not true
How do you take from this You claim your dil has never liked you?

Eloethan Wed 11-Oct-17 22:33:44

travelsafar I hope it will all be sorted out and everything gets back to normal. Best wishes.

Maggiemaybe Wed 11-Oct-17 22:48:15

Emelle, my daughter is the same. I do have to be firm at times. My daughter takes on all the woes of the world and talks to me about them. I had to say this morning that she needs to limit it a bit. That upset her.
I was a nurse and you have to learn not to empathise with absolutely everyone or you become a nervous wreck.
Thing is, she doesn't want to hear about what I have to say . It's rather onesided.

I firmly believe that my adult children are responsible for their own financial affairs. I would never criticize their management of money to their face. It has nothing to do with me. Though I must admit that I am often amazed what they spend their money on. I think this is partly a generation thing. I can't imagine getting into debt for the sake of a holiday but I think many younger people see this as perfectly natural.
Of course you have the right to express an opinion but this particular one obviously didn't go down well. I would phone them and say your intention was never to upset them. Your concern is only for their welfare.

I do feel for you , it's a bit of a minefield getting the balance right. I know it's hard , but a lighthearted apology may work such as ' oh I'm so sorry I don't always realise how what I say comes across, take no notice of me or just tell me it's not my concern if I slip up again' good luck

Try not to stress too much and don't let it grow in your mind to be worse than it is. Make the first move if necessary to keep the lines of communication open. Good luck.
