How good are you at offering comfort to someone in distress?

After an encounter with a neighbour recently who broke down in tears due to her many problems, I realised how rubbish I am at giving comfort.

Some people can throw their arms around the distressed, but I find it awkward. Members of the family no problem but not others.

I dunno... my mother always wanted to hug me as a child but I always tried to avoid it. When I grew up she accused me of being cold and not loving her. Yet if she needed help I was always ready with practical help and advice. My dad was happy to touch people too but at least he didn't complain about me not hugging him

There are times complete and utter strangers tell me their inner secrets and worried. Wherever I go people will talk with me and tell me lots of personal stuff. I just don't have the heart to stop them. Think I just have that kind of face ?
